Title: my alternatives to A pillar pods
Post by: richard cash on May 09, 2006, 07:53:42 PM
as i couldnt find any specific pods for the RX7 i thought id make my own and sort out the tatty dash i had at the same time.

First of all i got just made a blob on the dash with expanding foam then cut and shaped to make this:

then fibreglassed the foam shape:

finally used easysand to get nice smooth edges:

and while i was at it i thought id sort out my broken door card compartment

Then after prepping the rest of the dash it was ready to spray.

just so you dont think ive gone crazy, it is the same colour as the car :)

when i was prepping the dome i dropped it and cracked it into 5 peices so had to repair that with fibreglass too, so now its one big piece of plastic instead of 2 managable ones. If you look in this pic you can see that theres no line between the done and clockface cover. (pic is a bit crap because of the reflection of the wall by the car)

the gauge pods turned out pretty good too, just have to fix them down now and im ready to go

autometer make a rhd pod for the fd if you want a subtle looking black A pillar pod.  I also like the centre speaker twin pod.

i dont think i could reproduce the pods to sell on here as they are a little time consuming but if you wanted to know exactly how to get the shape then ill write a thorough guide. You could make pods for anything though, i was thinking about doing one for my turbo timer and aditional injector controller but decided i wanted the gauges more.

In my old mr2 i also made ones for the SAFC and RSM. Its easier than a lot of people think and with basic tools anyone can do it

heres the custom mr2 dash i did:
