it works when its cool and got good airflow, once it has heat soak thats it takes ages to get cool again

I think Laeeqs got one of these and he\'s running big bhp. He\'s prob a good one to speak to.

I have one of these, its great, much better than the stock i/c.

However I find that it heat soaks quicker than the stock one. Especially in this weather where you park the car in say a petrol station and then come back 10 mins later and find the temp has gone up by about 10 degs.

You can\'t fit it with the stock airbox as they share the same inlet and the support bracket blocks the air tunnel. I am looking for a way to get more cool air in to feed the HKS RS kit I have, got a few ideas saved for a rainy day.

In addition, when I fitted the SMIC the injector duty went up quite a lot so I ended up changing those for bigger primaries. I think it depends on what level of tuning you want to go to though.

In this weather I am averaging about 40 degs without water inj switched on but again the induction cones dont help.

If you want something thats easy to fit, does exactly what it says on the tin then you cant really do better than one of these. If you really want to tune the car then probably a front mount, v mount etc is the way to go.

I personally didnt want the hassle of moving bits/chopping stuff etc which is needed with the others.

My next purchase (when the missus allows me lol, tv has broken so have to replace that first doh) will be a vented bonnet, something like the scoot one as this will reduce the amount of heatsoak and help reduce the hot enginebay !!

You can probably read pros and cons for SMICs, FMIC and charge coolers etc. Get something that is going to be best for you !!

ill i ever hear is great things about this greedy SMIC but find it hard to find someone selling them especially when one of its FMIC is cheaper in most places or thats the only one they stock

Thats the only thing ive found that lets it down but then ive only just started to look has anyone else found somewhere that sells this cheap? as i prefer this over the design of the XS one

Ok cool.  What I want is one of the Greddy SMIC.  The lower and upper hardpipes and the elbow to go with.:)

I have one of these on mine but i have made ducting to feed air straight into and it works great.  In this hot weather im seeing temps in between30 -- 40 but soon as the water comes on that drops down to 25ish.  In this hot weather i have the WI set to come on a bit quicker as it does help a little.

I do prefer these to front mount as we all know rotarys do run hot and the water temps tends to stay over average in this heat and on top of that if the rad is blocked by a FMIC, there is even less cooling or air going into your rad and the engine.

There are some very good quality FMIC that do get more air flowing through them but still that rad is behind and for me keeping the water temps down is more important then the air.  If you have more cold air going in the engine will perform much better no doubt, but it will also get more hotter.

Hi Craig!

I would keep that IC if i was you.  Have you got anything on top of the fans to cover as the hot air from the rad fans is going straight through your IC.  Good docting will improve your air temps.

I think twin turbos do produce more heat as there is less room for the air to go through so if you are planning to keep the twins then with the front mount you will have even less air flow to you rad and the engine.

Probably very dumb comments, since I’m not experience with RX7s (yet), but looking at the pics of the engine bays, would it perhaps make sense to relocate the battery to the boot to make some much needed room in there ?

Also, has anyone made an IC like those fitted to the Audi RS6 ? ie split into 2 smaller units and installed on either side of the front bumper assembly ? This wouldn’t obstruct the radiator and would receive good airflow. Oil coolers could be located somewhere else ??
Thinking out loud here, so feel free to flame !

Devil\'s Refugee  - a lot of aftermarket I/C require the battery to be moved so that is a common mod.

As for the intercooler idea, thats a great one using anything of a RS4 or RS6 (ive actually got a set of RS4\'s sitting in my garage doing nothing)

so i might have to see whats behind that front bumper

p.s TT\'s also run twin intercoolers like the S4\'s but those are plastic end job\'s

the problem with the above idea is that the audi\'s use V6 engines so one turbo either side of the engine so one intercooler either side suits it

on a FD the air from the turbos joins in the Y pipe so its not really very practical.

CraigN - I think the way Devil\'s Refugee and the way im refering to it is that you have the boost come out of the Y pipe or out of ur single turbo

into  the top of intercooler number one then out of the bottom across a boost tube along the front of the car into bottom of intercooler number two and then exit the top of into boost tube upto the throttle body

I know its more headache but means u could run two intercooler same time which should reduce temps a bit

Audi TT runs this setup due to lack of space

I have complete design rights over this idea for the RX :Thumbsup!

So tuning companies, please submit very large cheques to me for this concept !

Only other couple of ideas I can think of is installing a chargecooler or NOS/dry-ice spray bar across the IC to lower the temps but again this is adding bulk in a cramped engine bay.

The spray would work for a FMIC set up surely, even though the air to the rad would be warmer in a normal FMIC setup the spray should lower the temps sufficiently to negate this. Not sure how effective this would be for normal driving conditions though.

Anyone fitted a chargecooler ?
Scooby\'s have similar heatsoak probs with the TMIC and I\'m sure PACE developed a chargecooler system as an alternative to a FMIC.
