Title: Major Engine Problems.
Post by: h41tel on May 08, 2006, 02:21:05 PM
Hi i have a 1992 fd rx7 whih i purchase 3 months ago. the car has been running fine till recently when it started to backfire as soon at the the throttle is floored or even past half way. he car seems as it is struggling. i took it to a local garage they checked it over and added some extra oil and it seemed to be fine for about a week. It occured again after ad so i did the same this add oil and it was fine. meaning the car is drinking lots of oil. The other day i was on my way home and smoke started appearing from the engine bay. the car was over heating. and smoke coming out of the engine bay. When i open teh engine bay there was condesated water everywhere. i checked water and coolant. perfect. no probs. now the car constantly overheats and strugles to be turned on, but when turned on it sounds horrible. like there are mice in the engine.

Does this mean that i need a engine rebuild????

Who would be the best people to see.  i live in essex and cant find any local rx7 specialist.

Can anyone please help as i have only had the car for 4 months and am really not enjoying owning a rx7.

Thanks

H

if you having problems starting the car and since its drinking oil, it sounds like water seals have gone. it does sound like its rebuild time :( sorry

Sounds to me like water/oil seal failure, it allows oil to mix with water, hence you are drinking oil, and also its creating a pressure biuld up with ecapes through the ast/ over flow bottle hence condensation. The rough running/ mice is where its running on one rotor as the other is probably full of water/oil.
You really need to tow it to a specialist who will run a water test and compression test, there are none local, so phone round and take your pick from the engine builders with banners above. In no order, Hayward Rotary, Dragon, Reworx, Jimmys, RX Heaven, Rotary Repair & WGT. If you have to trailer it its not to important as to distance, call them all and make you choice.

If you\'re certian the engine needs a rebuild, it could be cheaper to remove the engine yourself, and just take that to a specialist for building.

Any reputable garage should be able to perform a coolant test, as that\'s a standard test on any car.

Does it sound like its missing on idle? What sort of Mileage has it done? And did the Problem start small and get worse?

Also when you say it was overheating i take it the Gauge was showing HOT and steam was coming out but was the Rad warm?

If it had properly overheated: i.e. standard temp gauge moved above the normal middle point, then the engine will be toast.

the car has done 105000 km. the gauge was not moving any higher then normal. however the oil gauge kept going up and down to zero. The car now when starts does idle but the whole car seems to be shaking. and lots of fumes are released from the exhaust.

Standard oil gauges are pretty unreliable anyway - mine goes up and down all over the place and often sits at zero (sender units are  pretty suspect) I\'ve just got used to it!!! Of itself that doesn\'t mean much but obviously the other symptoms do point to a problem.

First i sugest you do this....

Take the Egi fuse out and the ft top plug and turn it over then replace the plug and take the rear top plug out and turn it over. Listen to the noise it makes, both rotor should sound the same with the same spacing and volume of Psshhh noises.

That will tell you if you have lost an Apex, this will cause bad running and Blue Smoke (not sure how it could cause white though??)

TBH its odd that it went better when the garage added oil?? I think with the Mileage it may be down to wear.
