Just finished thissingle turbo conversion and engine rebuild (big big street port:), put it in the car yesterday. Setting up custom ignition system at the moment, and some more work on the fuel sytem after that. Just thought i\'d post some pics. More to follow when all work is completed.

Looks really cool, Are you suffering the same mid life as me, all that bling.

Is this gona be your own car or a customers.

All you modders out there, this is what an engine and car should bling like, not my bag of old sh*ite thats cost a fortune.

Well done :D

Daft question, but why spend all that money on a huge turbo and then force it to injest hot air straight off the radiator, rather than giving it nice cool external air to breathe.

Seems a bit like drinking your own urine

You havent seen the engine in the bay Bill, it will not ne exposed to radiator heat, dont worry.
Good point though, I am quite aware of your point, you can see that from this photo of my old engine bay.

Thanks g11ary, this is a customers car.

AHA. I\'ll post a picture of REAL cold air intake tonight (have the pics back of the engine whilst it was briefly dressed up in the westfield.)

Thanks for the pic jaydee

Hey Bill, I cut a frikken hole in bonnet how much colder air do you want!!!! Look at 99% of heavily modded japo cars they hardly even address this issue, so I think I\'m doing quite well.

\'All you modders out there, this is what an engine and car should bling like, not my bag of old sh*ite thats cost a fortune.[/B]

g11ary you\'ll be surprised at how little this all cost compared to what you have spent on your ecu alone! That includes full rebuild, big street port and loads of other mods to engine, T66 turbo, wrapped manifold, wastegate, big power custom ignition system, big power fuel system, loads of little secret bits and welding etc. Power FC ECU, painting engine bay, extra injectots, remove ABS, instal line lock, install Wilwood brake bias adjuster etc, etc.

Wait for the picture. Lets just say your inlet is still inside the car.

(Okay my car is, ummm, narrower so its not a fair comparison).  If I had that turbo the whole thing would be outside the chassis.

Yeah nose is on its way.

Me and Jaydee have been bouncing ideas of each other for this project, so it should be interesting to see how some of the more heavily modded bits work together. More pics as soon as they are avaliable.

Bill Bill Bill,

"That\'s not a cold air inlet!  THIS is a cold air inlet":

I think this engine/setup in your car could run 10\'s you know.

Now come on lads,
You need a fridge and a long extension lead to have a genuine cold air inlet!!
BTW Ross the car looks very good.
Kind regards
Carl

Fish: The scoop is a left over from a previous incarnation. The cold air in my case is that the Trumpets are outside the bodywork, as is the only true way

Glenn: Interesting. Shame the fabricator missed out on any chance to actually have a resonant mode in the airbox. Should kill the noise a bit though. 4 rotors won\'t fit but I have measured up for 3 :-)

Hi Bill,
That is a 13b with 4 throttle bodies.I did a double take but lokked at the engine and realised that it was a 2 rotor.
Kind regards
Carl

:)

I shouldn\'t have actually shown that photo!

Would you believe that the engine produces around 370fwhp.

The in-car video from the Nationals here will be available soon.  I have almost finished putting the DVD together.

I guarantee you will watch this video over and over - it is awe inspiring.

I\'ll put up another post about it - to see if anyone is interested in purchasing.

.ps Hi Bill - what is a "resonant mode in the airbox" ?  haven\'t heard of that before.

.ps Sorry Ross (GB highjacking thread!) - nice looking engine BTW.

Hmmm Yes, just spotted that too. Basically looks like the next intake I am planning, as a set of thobble botties off a GSXR 750 are about spot on for a 13B.

If that\'s 370HP it must be one of Guru\'s 13000 RPM jobbies. Once day I will have one of those.

I\'ll do a write up on tuned resonances sometime for you. I\'m already looking into getting some airboxes made up for throttle bodied cars.

This is probably a stupid question...

Back to turbo\'d motors. What does the plenum actually \'do\'? What difference does having  the T/B(s) before or after the plenum make? Does any one have any pics of Rotormasters 7.5s 20B FD engine bay? I\'m sure that has the T/B\'s AFTER the plenum chamber...

Interesting question, with the answer \'it depends...\'

You can view a turbocharged application in 2 ways

1. As a NA engine with boost
2. As a purely boosted engine.

Which way you chose has an effect on how you approach the problem as with 2. you just add more boost to get around any limitations. With 1. you build the most efficient NA motor you can and then add boost.

Now given that you generally run quite low boost levels with a 13B I personally tend towards 1. as the preferred method, and here you run into the first problem with the stock inlet. As supplied it is tuned to give peak efficient at arouond 4500 RPM above  which it falls off. For a road car this is perfect. For a tuned tyre shredder it isn\'t.

Anyway I digress. Throttle location affects responsiveness, mainly off boost. This can be viewed as good or bad. For example, if you just touch the loud pedal and get 4PSI boost this does not make for a happy drive in the pouring rain, but it makes a great trackday car.  (welcome to the world of drivability).

Having a large plenum increases the time taken to pressurise the system, but bear in mind that you also have intercooler and piping to pump up as well. Putting the throttle before the plenum will make for a smoother but slower build up of boost when you goose it. Putting the throttles after will generally mean you have a ready supply of pressurised air so the \'kick\' will be somewhat more abrubt.

Like I said, it depends how you want the car to behave.

Bill

P.S. This is only tickling the surface, and there are about 30 other factors I haven\'t even touched on.

Thanks Bill, its a start at least... If you have any suggested reading regarding plenum/intake considerations then please post them!

Cheers,
R.

Hi Bill,

Nope - it is a //www.cityperformancecentre.com engine, only revs to 9250rpm - and it makes all that power (no centre bearing).  Rohan (Guru) is making a little more power, and Phil Laird (QLD) even more.

Look forward to your post on "tuned resonances".

.ps Rich - get yourself a copy of Corky Bell\'s book, it goes into quite a bit of detail about Plenum\'s/size required depending on power etc. etc.

Bill,
is that geoffs old westy i see in this old thread, i though he wrote that off!

Does it still have a 13b carb\'d engine? would have been good to see something other than a RX7 with a rotary in it.
