Title: goodbye cruel world
Post by: rotorhead666 on May 02, 2006, 07:45:30 PM
i hate to say it,but i finally parted with my 12a turbo a while ago.she went to Carl(by the way Carl,i have the 2nd set of keys to send to you,i\'ll send them on when i get back in the country) worse,i\'ve defected to the darkside, temporarily,at least,as i now have an s14 200sx.i\'d like to take the opportunity to thank my wonderful 12at for being so much fun, pretty, noisy and fast.i know the chances of me getting another one now are pretty minimal.one day, perhaps.goodbye cruel world, maybe my rotary zest will be reborn. :evillaugh

I understand mate.
The poo steering will make me sell mine too I reckon, even tho I love the look/sound/go of the car.  Just doesnt feel safe, I mean if a kid stepped into the road I know in any of my other vehicles I would stand a chance of swerving round them, but in the 1st gen?  NO CHANCE, straight over them.  This car will put me in a ditch sooner or later due to its heavy, slow CRAP steering box.
Bunch of spoiling my cool car arse!

Try and give pip at WGT a ring, he has a 1st gen track car and it handles amazing around oulton park. Surely you can fit uprated steering to it to improve it ????

I must agree with "Oldone" the steering on my elford is fine, it is a bit vauge in the straight ahead but no worse than any crappy merc box system i have driven. On bumpy roads (which are the norm up here) the car finds its own jiggly way, but once steering lock is applied and the initial rear live axle hop has done its thing it is very positive. even under servere braking it is dead straight and can pull up as quick is not quicker than most modern cars.  If people have got issues, I would check and renew all the bushes and joints in the steering system and drag links etc and make sure it is all set up correctly, a car with the tracking set with too much toe in drives like you are on Ice and very unstable too much toe out they pull and wander like mad as well as tear all your bushes apart.., also get a decent sterring box rather than selling up..  .    Also, the more you drive modern cars the softer we all get, the answer is
to use it more..  Very simple really......

I don\'t think the suspension bushes alone are the answer, apparantly there are bushes (or similar) in the steering box which also wear and need replacement or adjustment. Once it is all tightened up you should have a good and confidence inspiring bit of kit. OK so the steering will always be a bit on the heavy side at low speeds, but thats just because we have all got so used to PAS.

Adjust all the play out of the steering box and then fit an adjustable castor swaybar and set it to max castor or as much as your arms can handle. Worked a treat on my last S2.

Have contacted Pip at WGT, he can fit a rack but doesn\'t facny it, same as RXmotors.  Bum

What do you mean he can ....but doesnt want to. I always thought that if you were paying for it then they would do it? Unless of course they are too busy.
anyhow, keep searching around I am sure you would be able to find a buisness that will do it.
 cheers, michael.

Bit of a kick in the teeth when you\'ve given them all that business in the past? Try a suspension/steering specialist or maybe buy the parts off Pip and get it fitted up elsewhere?

If you have a half decent look at any forum/car club out there, there will always be recomended tuners and also fabricators. Tuners, sure...I would pretty much only ever take my rotary to a rotary specialist. But fabricators can make bits for any. I am sure the other guys just said no due to being too busy.
This seems to be a very worthwhile mod so hope all goes well with the search for someone to do it.
 cheers, michael.

Its a difficult job to get right & all these guys really want to do is engine work (make it go faster!).  It seems they can do it, but they\'re busy enough doing jobs they like & they dont want the work thank you....
Shame, because there IS a market for this.  There cannot be a 1st gen owner who would say no to a steering rack!  People buy these cars \'cos they look & sound special, but sell them on/scrap them \'cos they are so poo to actually drive due to the vintage steering box.  Personally, I\'m close to sticking it on ebay for precisely this reason.   I think its a bit short sighted of the tuning guys to refuse to address the one major flaw in these cars - if the numbers keep on dwindling to nothing then who\'s going to pay them to build all these rotary engines in the future??

^ Totally agree. I\'m sure there are a few pre RX-7 owners who wouldn\'t say no either!!

If you exhaust all the garages locally maybe we could look to KiwiRE or someone offshore who has done a few of these. I\'m sure there is a kit out there that could be combined with a locally sourced rack. IIRC Kiwi rally car ace Rod Millen used a 626 rack in his RX-3 back in the 70\'s.

If you like I\'ll do some digging and see what I can find. ;)

There is a company called CP Racing over in Canada that makes a steering rack conversion kit for the First Gen RX-7. I beleive the entire kit costs something around $400 US Dollars. I have helped install one of these in the past and they are a breeze. Hell if you look at the picture and the cars frame long enough you should be able to figure out how to build the mod yourself(for a lot less money).

the CP racing kit is for LHD ... which is much easier as theres not much to have to clear on that side of the engine bay. The CP racing kit has also got a fair bit of flack for its design (uinversal joints on steering shaft operating beyond their design angles and the steering geometry is pretty suspect)

Or he could try to refurbish the gear.

Heres some info on it fron the Mazdaspeed site.
