Title: Flooding Paranoia
Post by: noyzboy on May 01, 2006, 10:24:27 PM
I never start and then stop my stock FD when cold. I always take it for a run to warm it up. Good excuse LOL
For reasons I won\'t bore you with, tomorrow I have to move REX 50 yards, then stop it ,leave it, and come back in 20 minutes and drive it to work.

I have just boxed it in with  other cars so that I can leave it running unattended to warm up for 10 minutes before I move it the first time to ensure it has finished the warm up cycle and won\'t flood.

Am I getting paranoid about this due to the many threads here and on FDUK about "Can\'t start cos I flooded it". Am I going OTT.
Opinions please.

It\'s sensible to take precautions - and that\'s a good way to do it. To be honest, you probably only need to warm it for 5 minutes or so.

There is another method, which involves holding the revs at 3000rpm for 10 seconds, or something like that to stop it from flooding. Can anyone confirm?

Lol when I park at my girlfriends house if I get told to move the car because I am blocking her folks spot I end up starting it and driving it round the block (5mins).

They still laugh about it now !!

I recommend taking the precautions mate, for the sake of 5-10 mins driving it will save you a lot of hassle if it gets flooded !!!

Noyzboy!  How many miles are on it?

If flooding is an issue - it is usually because the engine has low compression (BUT NOT ALWAYS!) as RX-8\'s can also do it.

Do a search on \'Flooding and Compression\' on the forum - there are some good threads on this with lots of info.

Good sticky here: http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=604&highlight=flooding+compression

I asked Pip about this.  He said just to be on the safe side make sure the temp gets to 60.  That was just after I had it rebuilt.  My issue is if I want to move it out of the garage to clean it, normally jut leave it ticking over until it reaches the desired temp.

I heard if you run it on idle and pull the EGI fues to stop it, it won\'t flood.

BUT!! i don\'t see the diffrence between pulling the power to the Ign and turning the key off?

On occasions I\'ve started my car and turned it off very quickly (30-60 secs)  and never had a problem...got to say though I never realised until recently that this was likely to cause a flooding problem...perhaps I\'m going to get paranoid too now... :(

Martin, you can do this:

Hold the revs at about 2k. Then as you turn the key off, floor the pedal.

This will pump air with no petrol through the chambers as the engine shuts down.

Mission accomplished. No flooding issues.
Re Glenn\'s query...I\'ve never flooded it yet.. it\'s just my paranoia setting in....it just that it seems to be the easiest way for your Rex to catch you out.

I know Rotechniks leave their customer cars running outside to warm up in the morning after driving them out of the workshop.
Thats how a Rex performs the magic trick of turning a tankfull of fuel into a tankfull of air without going anywhere. LOL

That would be like interupting the fuel pump - the engine will use what\'s in the pipes and then stall - usually takes about 5 secs or less.  :guinness

The ECU always fuels very rich when the engine is cold - it uses the signal from the Water themosensor to do this, which is why some people have used this as a hack to get more fuel on the primaries.  Since the temp gauge is reading the same sensor, by the time this starts to rise you should be ok.

I have never had a problem with just a short drive and about 3 mins of warm up, but it depends on the tuning you have done.

Some of the aftermarket ECU\'s have code in to prevent flooding as well - so you might want to check for that.

I do this everytime I move my Rex and don\'t drive it.  I\'ve done this countless times moving the car out of the garage for a clean and then back again.  I\'ve never had it flood.

If I have to move the rex I just stick the turbo timer on (3mins) which seems to work well :)

Just a tip if you do end up flooding

Mines flooded a few times in the past , at first I used to pull the plugs to de-flood it , have bumped it a couple of times but now found that the easiest way by far is to put the peddle to the floor then just crank it in shortish bursts , as long as theres enough juice in the batt it usually starts pretty quick
