Title: stopped by police
Post by: barmar on April 29, 2006, 06:26:03 PM
After being stopped by police this morning on the way to work, I need to move my number plate. It has been where it is for over 6 months now and I\'ve never been stopped before, but now it will need to be moved. Anybody with any suggestions especially those with the CWest front bumper feel free to pass them on. When I asked them they told me to put it in front of the mesh, to which I replied no way as I only had it rebuilt 4,5k miles ago and didn\'t want to risk it overheating. They then told me that at the speeds that I can legally go at it shouldn\'t be a problem (probably true but hey who sticks to the speed limits all the time). Then they said I could get a sticky plate which is what I had when it had the standard bumper. I explained that it was illegal too, but they said it would be OK and that if anyone had a problem they could take it up with them - fair enough I suppose, so i\'ll probably do that unless anyone has any better suggestions.

I knew I was going to have a bad day, at work the managers and the staff were swapping positions for the day as we\'ve been open for 10 years. It just went downhill from getting pulled.
O well tomorrow is another day hopefully a better one than today.

Cheers for listening to my moan

Barry

I\'d go for the sticky. At least it was the Police that said you could do it :)

I never liked the sticky license plate - thought on a smart looking car, it looked tacky - just a personal opinion.

I\'ve also got C-West front end - check out the picture on my web site below. I had some brackets made up at a specific angle, then got a squarer number plate made up.

Being at an angle, I still get a decent amount of air flow going in.

I had mine in the windscreen on the inside for over a year and nobody ever bothered stopping me, even when parked next to nosey coppers in a garage they just looked and drove off. Mind you i left the bracket that had snapped off under the nose cone there just in case so i could always say id only just broke the number plate and was off to fix it now. To which they\'d reply \'you\'ve been driving around here for over a year ...\' etc

2 ways around your problem is firstly as mentioned the sticky plate which if presented nicely will be ok ie you can read the plate easily and its isn\'t too small. :Laugh

Secondly get some brackets made up which will give you a folding plate number so when the speed picks up the plate will swing down allowing air intake as normal  :Laugh

As for sticky plates looking tacky i have to disagree if placed in the right spot they are ok

I hope you got their names & badge numbers incase of any comebacks

Do the plate in the windscreen one or do a sticky like Gurj\'s

I\'ve had the plate in the window for a couple of months. Its not like i\'ve got nothing to hide, but like others i don\'t want to srew it on the front of the car.

http://www.craigsplates.com seems to do sticky plates at reasonable prices and i think as long as the lettering is standard size and spacing then i can\'t really see what the fuss is about.

The only reason why stickies are illegal are because they used to sell a kit for trailers and caravans where people could make their own.

Surely its safer, nobody can steal your numberplates then. I see quite alot of ordinary cars here going to work that have show plates and i know full well they will never be stopped.

I always quite liked the look of this:

(http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/9991/sideplate9jp.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(you\'d have to makes sure it doesn\'t block the oils coolers obviously), AND with the curve of the bumper, If you put it on the other side it would be more difficult for foward facing cameras to read  :p

I keep a copy of the MOT regulations in my car to show any copper that feels like pulling me over for my smaller plate, I\'ve never lost yet lol (even tho what is MOT legal isn\'t the same as what is road legal) work that out lmao.

Wouldn\'t be good for any type r car, there is an oil cooler on both sides and your blocking one completely off !

I\'m guessing if you go for a sticky plate, you can legally use the smaller import font?

DVLA regulations:

Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display number plates with smaller characters if:

    * The vehicle does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval

      AND

    * The vehicle\'s construction/design cannot accomodate standard size number plates

Specifications for smaller sized plates (for certain imported vehicles)

Character Height 64mm

Character Width 44mm

Character Stroke 10mm

Space between characters 10mm

Cheers for the comments guys think it will have to be a sticky plate. Its amazing how long some people have been going without plates and not getting stopped, think the only reason I got stopped was because they couldn\'t see it at all, and the only reason they didn\'t give me a ticket was because it was there and I didn\'t give them attitude

Thanks again

Mines a C-West nose and for an MOT I stuck a full size plate on with double sided adhesive pads and it lasted for a year until it was removed for a respray.

Currently I am in denial with no plate and will probably end up doing the same as before but smaller  :spank .

Ive just had a different front end put on mine, don\'t want to stick anything on there until the paint has been on a while.  I love the look without the plate - I think I might try risking it without - just going to have a fully legal plate in the car with some pads on the back showing signs off "falling off"   Then some polite chat with copper explaining it fell off and i\'m just in the process of getting some new sticky pads.  Obviously thats only going to cut it with any local old bill once then I will have to get something perm. - then I will go for a sticky one as well.

Well, being realistic, it\'s lucky you got a way with it for so long.  You can\'t read the plate at all at that angle.  I have the same nose and use a small font adhesive plate which I had made up from craigsplates.  I trimmed it to size and haven\'t had any problems with it.  I got pulled with no front which prompted me to do this.  If you really don\'t want the adhesive plate then I have a bracket which you can use for a \'small\' standard hard backed plate.  It attached to the underside of the centre section above the intercooler IYSWIM...  The plate then sits at the same level as the top of the bumper minimising restriction of air flow to the intercooler...

my number plate fell off the other week on the way to thor. have had it stuck back onto where it was before.

it is on at an angle so air can still get into the engine :)

Don\'t I know it, got stopped again today by different guys this time. This time they were a bit more forceful, telling me I had to sort it ASAP otherwise I\'d be fined. Told them that after being stopped last week I had one on order and that it would be getting delivered Monday or Tuesday, cut no ice with them, sort it or get fined was their attitude which I guess is fair enough. Only problem is I really don\'t want to move the current one just for a few days but I don\'t want to risk getting fined.
Thing is they said every time they have seen it its been parked up somewhere even mentioning seeing it outside my work. They know who I am so why didn\'t they just ask me to move it before???

I\'d go with the sticky in a small but not pi$$ take font.  I\'m using a font slightly smaller than UK legal but it\'s readable easily by plod so they aren\'t going to throw a wobbly over it.

Hope the sticky plate gets here soon, got stopped again (twice) today on my way to Crail. Got a £30 fine this time and a defect rectification notice. I\'ve got 21 days to sort it and take it to an MOT station, get the form filled out and sent back to the police and I won\'t have to pay the fine. Starting to laugh about this now. Up until last week I\'d been stopped 3 times in 14 years of driving. In the last 8 days I\'ve been stopped 4 times lol.

Just got stopped tonight, for having my plate in the windscreen, not on the front of my car. Got off without a fine tho, told him about the car reversing into me and knocking it off. Just got the standard 7 day wonder and the ticket making me get it sorted. At least the guy was ok though, didnt give me much hassle:)

I fit mine yesturday, it took a while to work out how to mask it up to align the thing square. Still worried it ruins the overall look of the front end, but at the end of the day its a hell of alot more legal. Ended up with the craiges plates but i bet d-signstudio can match it !
