Title: Latest round of mods complete : big thanks to RE:Worx and Newera Parts.
Post by: chrisBoid on April 29, 2006, 02:08:01 PM
Under advice from the ever friendly team at RE:Worx and Miguel from Newera, my latest round of mods turned out to be chassis strengthening as well as a completely new exhaust as I wanted to put a CAT back in (I\'m the only person I know who has put one back in).  I knew this would strangle the power a bit, so I hoped that the addition of a Knight Sports dual flow downpipe and a Racing Beat muffler would claw some of the lost power back.  Yes I could have upped the boost a bit but I\'m in this game for reliabilty so I did not want to jeopardise my turbos or anything else.

So, what has changed?

Knight Sports dual downpipe, Knight Sports high flow CAT and Racing Beat muffler.  After mapping my power at the wheels was down only 15hp to 263.6hp.  I am very happy with this as I am pretty sure I would never notice the difference.

I also had FEED front and rear anti-roll bars fitted along with FEED solid engine and diff mounts, FEED engine brace, FEED cabin brace and FEED AST (so no need to worry about splitting the factory plastic one).

I also had the car lowered on the Teins as I no longer have to negotiate an awkward drive.

Dropping and strengthening the car makes it really feel like it is on rails.  I would not say I am a quick driver but it feels fantastic and planted.  I do get a bit more vibration from the solid mounts but I can easily live with it.

A big thanks to the RE:Worx team, always worth the 160 mile round trip.  They provide an excellent, friendly and incredibly knowledgeble service and there\'s always the chance of bumping into more fellow rotorheads down there.  Thanks to Chris for some 11th hour arch trimming to get me on my way :)

Anyway, onto the pictures.

Some people were interested to know the sound difference in my exhaust setup.  So I recorded it on warm up idle (~1500rpm) and revved it to 2750rpm a few times with both setups.

Old Setup
Standard downpipe.
4" mid-pipe with silencer.
4" exit muffler.

New Setup
Knight Sports dual downpipe.
Knight Sports 3" mid-pipe with high flow CAT.
Racing Beact 3" exit muffler.

Both files are mpg (~12.5Mb and ~0.75Mb), the second being a smaller resolution as I realised we were interested in the sound not the picture :)

With the new setup, the exhaust is more noticeable in the cabin due to the much smaller CAT compared with the silencer, but it is quieter outside the car.  It is also a deeper grumble now more than the a raspy note from before.

Bugger, it doesn\'t look like I can post the old setup mpg as it is too large, so here is the new setup mpg anyway.

That looks awesome as always Chris. Always has been my favourite kit for the FD as well. When I have some money I\'ll have to speak to you about sourcing Feed bits and bobs!

Out of interest how much was the exhaust I was quoted about £430.

A very beautiful car mate, just keeps getting better :chat

I shouldn\'t ask this because I know the answer is going to hurt my wallet, but how much are those carbon side skirts and scuff plates costing these days ??

As has already been said, looking great there mate. One of the best cars around i feel and now its lowered slightly it looks even better. Never heard of a cabin brace before but looks nice and shiney back there behind the seats.
Now all you need to do is get a few bits polished under the bonnet and that\'ll look the nuts too :)
See you at the shows

Adam

Great write up Chris and a lovely car!!,I\'ve been through 6 backboxes in an effort to quieten my car down,I now have the Racing Beat dual tip exhaust.I was expecting a power loss compared to my Ganador GT titanuim backbox but the car recorded the same power figures at the THOR dyno day and a little more boost at the top end?

Paul : RE:Worx have the Racing Beat muffler for £470 inc VAT and delivery (http://www.reworx.com/products_exhaust_catbacks.htm).  Watch out for the FEED addiction.

Dave : Reworx have the FEED side skirts at £650 inc. VAT (http://www.reworx.com/products_interior_exterior.htm), that\'s where I got mine.
My girlfriend bought me the FEED scuff plates from Newera Parts, they have them listed for £204.50 inc VAT and delivery (http://www.neweraparts.com/parts.jsp?keywords=+&category=8&model=1).

Adam : no point polishing some bits if they\'re going to be replaced ;)

James : the Racing Beat muffler is a fine piece of work with plenty of potential.  It\'s a shame I replaced the whole exhaust at once, not exactly great scientific practice!  Cheaper on labour and tuning though!

Cheers for all the comments guys :)

Think that its called a \'Gruppe M\' and it stands at around £450 sterling!!!, so not cheap. But the hks filters that i had are £520, so its not the most expensive either. And i believe that its one if not the best on the market, not sure where sells them tho mate. But it does look good :mmmm

Chris.
Now we\'re talking! Still looks good.

I can\'t see the point of No CAT anyway.
In experiments with my friends 20B we experienced 2 hp gain by changing our high flow CAT to a straight pipe. So it went back in.

If you dont need the driveway.
The only thing left would be a nice rear diffuser.
I always think the rear looks too small of any fd after GT wing is added.

GAZ666 : I am pretty sure it is GruppeM, Knight Sports do a similar version too (http://www2.ocn.ne.jp/%7Eknight78/FD3S.htm). Mine came on the car when it was imported :)  Finding info on the GruppeM RX-7 intake has always been hard, but Newera Parts will be able to sort you out.

Ben : brakes next, then under the bonnet :o

Russ : dropping it has helped the looks no end.  The only slight bother with the CAT is that the lambda sensor for tuning needs to go before the CAT, can\'t just stick it in the muffler anymore.  The rear diffuser has been mentioned before - it\'s definetly on my list to investigate but I quite like the high look of the rear so I\'ll have to be convinced.

What cat where you using in that 20b Russ, I need to quieten mine done a touch for trackdays.

Chris, there are a few different types of diffuser you can use on the FD but like Russ says they really do look the part (very F1 inspired) and finish off the rear nicely. I think a carbon one would look the part and continue the carbon theme from the side skirts round to the back. :D

Everything was custom on my friends 20b fd, The exhaust was fabricated by a small Aussie workshop "Jakes Performance" for best flow but contained a Superflow cat centre from memory. when you have over 500hp the small changes dont really make much difference. That car was a weapon.

The silenced mid-pipe and back-box was all one piece and went to John Yorke and his yellow banana, which is now owned by Royal.  It was a nice bit of kit!

Russ : have sent you an email.

Nice looking car. I don\'t want to flame anyone, but it seems to me that UK parts are so much more expensive then purchased from the US.

I would guess that shipping original parts from Japan to the US is cheaper than Japan to the UK which might play a part in prices.  So whilst the retail value appears cheaper in the US, you have to add shipping and import duty etc.
Although I\'m sure there are bargains to be had.

If you buy it I will have to kill you :Tongue1

Check ouy //www.reworx.com they are the official FEED distributers in the UK and where I got my kit from.

They have prices for the front and rear arches and carbon skirts, totalling £2260 inc VAT.  They don\'t have a price for the FEED front bumper - I\'ve heard it is not cheap, expect around £1k.  The bonnet is RE-Amemiya and £887 inc VAT.  The rear wing is Mazdaspeed and expect the price to be close to £1k. Then you have to get it fitted and painted ~£1500.  Once that is done you realise your wheels look rubbish with the wide arches so you have to shell out for wheel spacers or get new wheels (£2k + £600 for tyres) with custom offsets as well as adjustable suspension £1k...

Expect all this to take 4 months, be without your car for 6 weeks and take about £10k out of your pocket

I can\'t remember how much it was (I bought it with other stuff at the same time).  Checked FEED\'s website (http://www.fujita-eng.com) and converted to Sterling, came out at about £150.  Add in shipping, import duty, VAT etc.

Best to contact Newera for a price.
