Title: Dumb questions on FD???
Post by: fd3s_rx7 on October 20, 2003, 07:05:14 PM
This is a dumb question but please bare with me because I just bought a 1993 FD3S and don\'t know much about rotary.

How do you drive the FD (RX7)???

I heard rumors that the FD are suppose to drive it to redline or 6000 RPMs everytime you drive it.  Wouldn\'t that just killed the engine way quicker then it is already.

Or is it alright if I just drive normally shifthing at every 2500 RPM or 3000 RPM. ??? What would happen then??

Oh yeah have you guys ever notice a fuel or some kind of smell coming from the top end of the engine when driving on the Freeway for an hour or so non-stop??? The smell only comes when boost is kicking in....  What could the problem be to this??

Well anyways any answer will help thanks!!!!

Mate don’t think your questions are dumb, that’s how you learn by asking questions.

Basically I have heard form a few people, you should redline your rex in every drive just to get rid off the carbon deposits, but I think that is a bit extreme, I take mine until it beeps which is about 7,000 rpm I do this every so often 2-3 times a week, not every drive.

About your fuel problem, sorry no ideas?

Enjoy your rex tho!

Hi and welcome,

First of all there\'s really no questions considered dumb on this forum so no worry\'s about what your asking.

Hopefully others will add to this post but here we go with my thoughts on your undumb questions,

Yes l have heard these rumours as well, for the drive it to the redline thing l think a lot of people say this to keep your Rotary free of carbon build up which gums up and sticks the Tips in etc but you say your driving the car for longish journeys on the freeway so this should keep the carbon from building up as your defiantly getting the engine warm properly and the long periods of constant revs should keep it all clean O/K

The petrol one needs a bit of investigation as you really should not have the smell of fuel happening .

All the best Clive

Quotedefiantly getting the engine warm properly

Very important bit!  Try to keep the revs low until the water temp gauge has settled on it\'s central point.  Then you can play to your hearts content...

I would wait till long after that water temp is in the middle.

Anyone running an oil temp guage will know how much longer it takes to get to temperature over the water, and its longer than you would expect.

Cheers

Will measure it tomorrow, but from memory I noticed that it can take up to 10 mins before the oil gets up there!

Also Clive has said in the past that the dash temp gauge is way out anyway. (Clive has an aftermarket water temp gauge)

Agree with Dan & Lee.  Water temp gets up to operating temp in only a couple of minutes whilst oil temp takes quite a lot longer.

I dont beleive in this redline everytime one bit. I think it can only contribute to accelerated engine wear. I agree with Clive, if you are driving on the motorway, it\'ll keep itself clean. If not, ok, take it to 6k in one or 2 gears, if at all.

The Fuel smell is most likely the fuel injectors leaking. They have little rubber seals where they connect to the engine, and these need replacing.

Thanks

OK, I did a check this morning. The oil in my car is Slick 76 10/40 minerial oil with 2500 miles on it. Time was 10:00 this morning.

Car started with oil temp of 4c. Water temp gague stated that the car was up to temp within 4 minutes of driving below 3000 rpm.

Oil temp at this point was still only 35c! It then took another 8 minutes of slow (below 3000rpm) driving to get up to 55c. The oil temps for driving around town average around 65-75c, on open roads it sits around 60-65c.

You can tell when the ECU (Engine Control Unit) thinks the engine is warmed up by opening the hood and pulling the vacuum line off the AWS (Accelerated Warmup System) actuator.  It\'s a medium sized diaphram on the firewall side of the UIM (Upper Intake Manifold).  If there\'s no vacuum in the line when you pull it off, that means the ECU thinks the engine is warmed up and has turned off the AWS.  If there is vacuum in the line (you\'ll know), drive a little longer, then stop and check it again.

Pay no attention to what the water temp gauge says (unless it says the temp is above normal, of course).  It\'s pretty worthless for telling operating temperature.

The fuel smell could be the pulsation damper (buried under the UIM and a known failure point).  When it fails it can spill gas onto the top of the engine - obviously a bad thing.  I think I\'ve also heard that if the lines to the the charcoal canister are plugged it can cause a fuel smell too (less significant).

As much as I think many RX-7 owners obsess over their cars too much and worry when they don\'t need to, if you\'re getting a strong fuel smell you should make an effort to track it down.

Just a thought,  I had a smell of petrol when i created boost, it was the inlet manifold gasget, early ones are paper and disintergrate. Newer ones are metal. Its a bugger to change though, got to take the turbos off!
