Title: Newbie AND 13b T2 into a series 3 first gen
Post by: Alterboy on April 25, 2006, 08:56:44 AM
Morning!

Just a HELLO from the excited owner of a 1st gen that needs some love and attention.  Like an engine.  and a gearbox.  and an interior.  and a paint job.  and some welding.  I think you can see where this is going...

Having sourced the car, and will be collecting the t2 engine and gearbox soon, I was hoping to get some advice from anyone on here who has done similar work on the pitfalls to look for and tasks to start sorting now (manifold, oil sump/cross member modifications, 12a parts for engine mounting) to help with this conversion...

First part of the help required - Stripping the car down so far has revealed that only the front sills and the front of the rear arches on the inside look like they need some welding done.  Can anyone recommend a mobile welder in the surrey area who would be prepared to have a look at the welding required and take it on?

This\'ll probably be the first of many pleas for help and have been assured this is the right place for someone like me to ask...

Ok heres a quick run down from what I can remember

Engine mounting - Need to either make custom engine mounts to use the existing TII ones or swap a 12a front cover and add a turbo oil drain and then modify the engine mounting plate to suit the longer 13B engine (think its 20mm different)

Sump - Either a modded standard sump or one from a 13B 1st gen as found in the states ... either way its a little tricky

Gearbox - the TII unit is different in length to the series 3 box and I think the propshaft splines are different

Fuel - need to sort out all the usual bits to convert to fuel injection.

Exhaust - Custom

mpk490p - cool - might well be in contact a fairbit for goodies!!  btw - any idea what colour the interiors came in?  I seem to have dark grey...  I have to say, I\'m stunned by the condition of the car - it absolutely rocks!!  There is only one tear in one rear arch cover, and that is the total of the damage to the car interior...!!

MikeLMR - I was planning to use a 12a front, and slot what I need to, so it\'ll line up.  Not too sure what I\'ll need to do about engine mounts, as the car had a ford V6 engine and gearbox in it when it was found...  And I don\'t know how the engine bay should look when empty...
Presumably the manifold would have to be custom (anyone any idea of cost?  Long way off yet...), and same with the propshaft?

Cool - I\'ll have a compare later!! It definitely looks more like the bottom two than the top two... Something seems to be missing in mine compared to the top one.  Can\'t quite put my finger on it... :D

This weekend is front and rear coming off, and having a good poke around to see what\'s there...  Any hints on what to look out for???  btw - I can\'t believe how easy it has been to get the bolts off!  Only one seized so far (wing mirror), everything else just needed a good yank!  Oh, and my haynes manual arrived yesterday - useful, or nice to have?

the manualls can be handy,
just check the water pipes for the rear hatch and sunroof the pipes drop the water behind the rear bumber and inside the front wings which is why they rot, i extended mine so they drop the water straight on the floor, the tank is worth checking if its coming off as they rot from the top also

If you can find one use a 12a turbo front cover as it already had the oil return fitting and looks more factory than tapping your own. Then if you just reverse and/or slot the front engine bracket you should be sweet. This is assuming the front engine crossmember is still there to attach it to. The turbo also needs to be moved forward to clear the steering box. You can buy a custom manifold from Australia or reverse and re-drill the factory one. Good luck with the conversion.
