its a pull type clutch on the fd, have you taken the little plate cover of the bottom of the belhousing underneath the car? and undone the eight bolts holding clutch cover plate to flywheel.
take the little plate of which has a warning  label on, then undo the eight bolts. you can only get to these eight bolts by rotating the engine with a t bar on main pulley nut because the hole under the little plate cover is quite small.

Through the inspection hole that Stuart mentioned -

If its a stock clutch you will see in centre of cover plate a round clip, lever clip towards back of gearbox(back of car) which will free gearbox from clutch allowing you to remove box.Do not lever clip all the way out as you will damage it.

someone on the us forum made a little video on how to deal with the pull type clutch. It shows how to press the little ring and should help you out tons. Hope this helps. If the video does not play, you will need the DIVX codec. This is just a little add-on to windows media player that enables you to play different formats.

If everything has been undone then give it a shake with someone underneath leavering the engine away from the gearbox.  A bit crude but it worked worked for us.

cheers G,

we got to the point where we can see the splineswhen the engine is rested back down on the mounts, but when we lift it to straighten it up it looks far more closed at the bottom end of the engine than it does at the top.

do you rekon it just need a bit of gentle persuasion from underneath??

The process for mine went like this;

Forgot to undo the bolts connecting the clutch to to the flywheel
I missed a bolt near the starter motor connecting the gearbox to the car!

Once these oversites were rectified it was a case of lifting the engine a bit, roll the car back slightly and then a bit of gentle encouragement and pop - off it came.  Others my have better advice but this is how we did it.

took mine off recently and when we lifted the engine it just slid off the bell housing without any bother, was I just lucky?
Also when getting it out I didnt remove the front bumper so the engine crane didnt quite reach, and due to the angle it was pulling the engine, it swung toward the front of the car as soon as the engine mounts got clear, maybe this pulling helped get it off the gearbox?
If in doubt sling a crowbar in any gaps you can find and give it a yank. ;) (for legal reasons I can\'t be held responsible for the destruction of any engine parts resulting from use of this particular procedure, in other words i\'m only kidding)

when i took mine out is was a cow to get of the dowels, a real cow!
shakey shakey and a good pull will do the trick because theres nothing else to hold it fast.
My fc was even worse to get of bellhousing.

learn from my mistake, when i put fd engine back in, i put the clutch disc in the wrong way round because im used to a normal push clutch and I work like at bull at a gate sometimes!
the springs on the clutch disc protrude further out on one side, so  when u take it of, note which side goes to the front of the car.
I got it wrong and fired the car up with a big smile on my face, tried to get it in gear and clutch pedal did nothing because the clutch was permanently engaged,
had to take clutch back out and swap it round :2Mad

Not sure what is right way, but have put a jack underneath just to support the bellhousing

If you jack the gearbox up it makes the engine easier to free the engine, if you do this and push the engine forward whilst lifting.

Sorry forgot about the gearbox jacking :Hammer
