Title: steering problem?
Post by: alexb on October 16, 2003, 06:44:55 PM
Hey All,

I\'ve recently bought an import \'92 Mk3, with no mods and about 76,000 km on the clock. I\'ve been really happy with it except that on the way home from work tonight I ran into a problem...

Normal driving around is fine, but when turning hard left (i.e. towards full lock) the steering seems to \'bind\' and then go smooth again, as if something\'s catching on the steering rack or something.... there\'s also a knocking-type noise and feeling through the steering wheel. Applying full right lock is fine, light and smooth.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers,
Alex

Could be lack of clearance on the wheel.

Under certain circumstances my tyres catch the wheelarch (i.e. hitting a kerb on full lock after doign a graceful 180 spin!).  If you\'re running wide wheens or are significantly lowered this could be the problem.

Nah, I doubt it as the car is standard... I will check it to make sure though.
