Title: RX-8s - are they waking up.
Post by: Martiny on April 17, 2006, 07:08:21 AM
When I am out in the 7, I seem to be getting a LOT more 8 owners waving back, than when they were first launched.

Are they waking up to what an RX-7 is?

They are probably thinking "Oh look there is that waving nutter again! Better wave back in case he hunts us down and removes our eyes with a dessert spoon!" :p

I don\'t bother to wave at 8\'s as there are bloody loads of them around here.

Loads round here. I chatted to one guy in an 8 a while back and all he said was "oh yours is the old school version of mine !!" , LOL , didn\'t mention mine was well over 100bhp more !

Its a shame alot of rx8 buyers don\'t have an idea of the other rotary stuff out on the road. I\'ve just stopped waving to them now, unless its yellow (Zak !!)

Lol, I thought about going to mazda garage again and blagging a drive in the new mx5. Thought about them letting me have a test drive and then taking the guy out in my 7 !

no point in waving imo. Its like having a bmw and waving to every other bmw driver.

I suppose it doesn\'t help that when me and a mate went to the Mazda garage in Derby the showroom dude looked out of the window and said "what cars that then" ???? The rx7 didn\'t looked amused  :Giggle

Yep I think you\'ve hit the nail on the head Martin. I have to confess that I\'m only just starting to recognise 7\'s on the road now.

Saw a nice FD on the M25 yesterday but as I was in my boyfriends BMW I thought it best not to wave in case he thought I was completely mad!  :Laugh

I\'m 1 of those RX8 freaks that waves to RX7s, but usually only FC\'s. As Sadly i have seen a few FDs driven by unsavory chav types. At least u know with a FC owner he is really into rotaries and not just after a cool looking jap car. Thats my justification anyway :p

Know what u mean about the mentality of the run of the mill RX8 owners. Spoke to one a few mths back when i parked next to him in a car park. Topic reached y we chose to get an RX8 and his answer was because (to him) it had to looks of an american muscle car?!?!?!? Spoke to him a bit about using the 8 on a track as i had my D1GP banner on my car and he looked horrifically at me as thou the RX8 was some type of SUV, which was how he used his actually, school runs and trips to work etc...

On that point I dont wave to 8s either... But if u do see some nut in a blue RX8 with a big orange sunstrip waving at u, thats me

the fc\'s are much more affordable so i think it will attract more younger \'chav\' type drivers, "not just after a cool looking jap car" says you that has a cool looking jap car  :Giggle

In truth I would have said that the average RX8 owner has bought into a reasonably practical and stylish coupe as an alternative to (say) the BMW 3 series or Alfa 156. They will like the idea its a bit different (and the rave reviews by motoring journalists will have helped). But It\'s likely to be used as a semi-practical every day car. Your RX7 is a very different kind of car and the RX7 owner is a very different breed. I\'m not sure they should even have called the RX8 the RX8. To me its not a natural progression of the 7. A fine car in its own right mind. I don\'t know how many of you are old enough to remember the Triumph TR6 but I used to have one and it was a lovely brute, but to me it was the last of the genuine TR\'s. When they brought out the TR7 it bore no family resemblance and shouldn\'t have been called a TR. To me its a similar situation.

I think in truth the rx8 owners are retirement owners,

Now what i mean by this is when retired people are looking for a sports coupe but with room and style this the rx8 is the cheapest in its class, thus they are not really interested in the "rotary" concept and are deffo not aware of the rx7 3/2/1 gen  :Nono!  so when we wave we get a confused look back and wonder wtf was that ???

No offence intended of course, just stating the way i have seen it, dont really bother waving at the rx8\'s unless at shows as they\'ll probably know what the rx7 is then  :WaveBye

Yup, would agree with Adrian and Gurj on their points. In all honesty i would have loved for the 8 to be more than it is. As whenever i have seen it battle it out on the track with other JDM cars, the 8 is usually close to last. And whenever a 7 runs in a battle its usually 1st or a fraction of a second behind. Plus the tuning potential is very limited at the moment.

If i could make the move to a 7 i would. But due to alot of other stuff in my life at the mo its not really gonna work. Just hope i can have the honour of owning a 7 in the not too distant future, b4 the government runs all performance tuned cars off the roads:(

PRob just my view, as i\'ve never seen a FC in the hands of a chav type. They might be cheaper than a FD but i dont think chavs really go for the FC look(style) and believe me, comming from crawley i KNOW chav culture!!

BTW hope u not suggesting that i\'m a chav in my cool looking jap car?  :spank  :p

Ah! The Etiquette of waving! What to Do?
When I am in my MX-6 I wave to other MX-6 drivers.
When in the Rex, if I have time, I raise the headlights in greeting.
I am often chastised by my sister (an occasional passenger) for
waving to other Rex/MX-6 drivers. She opines that women don\'t
have the same connection to their vehicles as men.
She is just being polite, as what she really means (as my hand hovers
near the ejector seat!)is that women do not exhibit the same
level of devotion....or..fanaticism to their vehicles. There may be
something in this as I have noticed tht female drivers of the above
tend not to respond. Could be my toothy grin, and manic wave, or
a natural reticence to engage with a stranger. Perhaps we take for
granted the natural connection we have with our vehicles, and asssume
that disinterested bystanders engage with the distinct presence
of these cars?
With respect to a recent thread....Mazda always have made individual
an unique vehicles, but the majority of respodents to this post are correct..
the majority of RX-8 owners are unaware of the rotary heritage.
Regards,
fdman

Had my first RX8 owner wave at me today,i was so shocked i almost forgot to wave back.Usually they don\'t even notice or if they do they stick their noses in the air,and do their level best to ignore your presents!! I\'m not saying all RX8 owners are the same and i\'m sure if a RX8 owner who was a member of the MRC or another club, they would wave.
8\'s seem to be driven mainly by women in my area, who don\'t know what a RX7 is let alone concider waving!
Anyway i\'m going to make an effort now to wave or flash(lights) :evillaugh
all 8\'s i see.
Cheers
Pete

I Know exactly what mean there are a few owners that just think rotary and understand the whole rotay thing like me and my fellow 8 owners on MRC, others just wave for fun and don\'t really understand but most and this disapoints me no end just look at at you like your some sort of scum and how dare you wave at them or what are you doing waving ant me I\'ve even gave up waving at one point and just flashed but that doesn\'t get response either
had blue one behind me last week flashed my hazards just looked at me like what are you doing. I\'ve owned my 8 now for just over two years and can tell you that in those two years I\'ve had three waves and 1 flash,
I think the best thing is to ingnor them all together and just respond to them if the make contact with you

Actually I think you\'re right Pete - and they probably don\'t know what a rotary is either (as someone else said).

I\'m still learning but hopefully the exception to the rule.

I got waved at frantically by a lady in an MX5, followed just a few cars later by a chap in what i assume was a gen 2 (I thought it was an old MR2 at the time). I ended up pulling over to check my lights were working.

Whilst not exactly the same, I get the same thing now in my Civic Type R. I have one of the original EK9 Civic Type Rs. The problem with the new style Civic Type Rs (2001 on) is that the majority of people bought them to be trendy, rather than as an enthusiast. I\'ve had people imply that all of the stickers on my Civic are fake eBay jobbies and that there is no such thing as a 1997 Civic Type R. Only an enthusiast will talk to me about the car, as they can appreciate the rarity of it.
When I was in the RX7, i\'d always wave at other 7 owners. I never bothered with RX8 owners, as very few knew (or cared) what the 7 was.

Hi Pete,

It healed really well but I couldn\'t wear a ring on that finger for a while.

I\'ll look out for you but I only really get out and about at the weekends - hopefully catch you at a club event?

Ann.
