Im planning on sound deadening my car this week. Does anyone know how many sq/ft id need to do the boot panels and doors? Also been looking at Dynamat and its fooking expensive! Some guys on the US forums have used plumbers sound deadening rolls apparently any of you guys know what they mean?
From memory you can get a cheaper version of brown bread from places like Maplins. Might be worth a look.

i got mine off ebay...

it\'s seriously sticky stuff and seems to work pretty well. i couldn\'t get to a lot of the doors because of the way they are made but a few big squares on the outer skin plus smaller bits in any space on the inner skin have made a noticable difference.
Is 30ft sq enough for the whole car?
30 should be more than enough.
From memory, I had done one of my Supra\'s with less than half of that. (10 springs to mind)
I guess it depends on what your main purpose of it\'s use is!
I only used it for the heavy music I was installing. Done the 2 doors and the rear panels just behind where those speakers were.
Works great for the music purpose, also makes your doors less prone to dents and nicks. :yes
Well its mainly to reduce road & wind noise, i am going to have an install eventually although nothing fancy just a simple component and sub setup
I\'d go for the extreme version of the dynomat, you only need to use 1 layer of it. The brown bread is a bit bigger sheet but it is thin stuff and gives average results. If your doing it with sound in mind then get some wadding as well (looks like santas beard, usually seat padding, but not the foam) this will improve the air charateristics around the speakers.
If your doing the whole car make sure you do the roof, it makes a massive difference to the level of sound.
Plus maplin electronics do digital db meters for 20 quid now so you could do a before and after test to make sure its doing its job !

Shaun...Dynamat extreme is really expensive and isnt the best Clicky for Comparisons (http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/) I doubt ill do the roof because its a major headache apparently, il be doing the boot and the doors. Might do the footwells/firewall later on though. What do you mean by wadding & where do you get it?
I was into quite loud systems a while back and i dynamatted the fto roof because my subs where distorting the roof so much it looked more like jelly ! I used 3 rolls of the extreme in the roof line (1 layer) and it completely removed the movement.
I\'ve used brown bread as well for doors and it is pretty good stuff, but is way thinner and you may want to double up around speaker areas.
The results you can create are extremely good. I had a 140 db system in an AXGT that was all dynamatted bar the roof and you could close the doors and chat to somebody at normal level with the system at full chat.
I would go for the thicker stuff around the loudest areas !
Shaun
Just had a good read of the article and i would say that the only issue with the dynamat extreme stuff was the cost of it ! I got 3 rolls for 45 quid when i did my roof. But i\'d won a couple of sound offs with SQ through the said company !
Shaun
oops, i\'ll bring a sample of wadding saturday to the rolling road day, its easier to show you what i mean !
Shaun
Coolio, ill probably get some of this eDead stuff for £50. If you have a roller can i borrow it please :)
Rixio
sorry bud i just used a peice of mdf as a scraper to get all the bubbles out.
Where do you get the eDead from? been thinking about putting some around my speakers

Post 3 on this thread ;)
not being funny but sound deadening does nothing for perfomance! ive heard you should take a look at roofing suppliers for cheap alternatives ;)
Roofing suppliers ey...hmm, whats the stuff called im supposed to be looking for?
What do you mean does nothing for performance? I dont want it to add bhp to my car! All i want is to reduce road noise and give the car a more solid feel and sound. Instead of a clang when shutting the door you get a thud. Wouldnt you preffer to drive in the comfort/quietness of a Benz rather than the comfort of a Escort?
he means the lead flashing, which is rediculously heavy and also expensive and messy as you need the tar like glue to stick it down which gets everywhere and wont come off your skin!
I bought some plumbers matting, you see it on the bottom of your kitchen sink. it strengthens the metal and that in turn is what gives you less vibrations. its very cheap too - i bought mine from ebay and its good stuff. you can buy a roller from the diy store for 99p they use it to stick the edges down on wall paper.
IMO you might be better off doing the transmission tunnel and the bulkhead rather than the boot or roof. there is also a sound deadening spray you can buy i would use that under the wheel arches ( a few coats) . remember Rix sound deadening is heavy and expensive you need to make compromises,
yes. thats exactly what i meant. Lead flashing. shove lead in your car.
:2Confused
Ive asked some of the VW camper boys and it seems that you can buy something called \'space mat\' which is like 20mm thick loft insulation; works with both heat and sound insulation. Ive also had experiences with using roofing felt with limited success. It depends what your after in the end; campers are awfull in the first place, so any improvement is noticeable.
heres some other stuff

and this stuff is meant to be good

sorry dubber! when you said roofing supplies!!! i have actually seen some people who used flashing!!
i used the edead stuff off ebay which you have been looking at and it is good but this pic was 10 sq ft.
As you can see it did where the seats were and half of the boot so you can probably work out how much you will need from that.
p.s i have nearly finished mine so i will send you a couple of pics like i said.
Ok cool Mark nice 1, so i reckon 30 sq/ft should be about right for the boot, doors and footwells :)
P.S are those rear seats gona fit back in ok? cos its looks like pretty thick stuff eDead...
Yes m8 30 sq/ft does sound about right.
I dont know about the seats cos im keeping them out. I have just about done so heres a link to what ive done so far theres about 20 ish pics of different stages.

Let me know how you get on with yours.
I finished the boot last week and been meaning to take pics but my SD card was corrupt :(
Anyway new SD and a pic of the boot :)
It has made a slight difference but not much, you can tell on the motorway but not on the street. Its not very thick this stuff but still a hell of alot cheaper than Dynamat. Is there any point doing the rear seat wells?
I calculated that for the price of 2 layers of this stuff in the whole car would be equivalent to 1 pack of Dynamat that would cover the boot!
Will start on the floor & doors as soon as the weather is a little better and the builders have finished on the house.
Mark what stuff did you end up using?
Rixio :Thumbs-up
You\'ve done a nice job, Just out of interest did you weigh it before you installed it ???
I would carry on forward if you can, it should start to make some difference. Usually you will find bass is alot more punchy.
Have you done the doors yet ??
Shaun
Iv used exactly half the roll so far, i\'ll weigh the other half tmrw. Saying that its not very heavy anyway, when it arrived id say it weighed 2-3kg. Havnt done the doors yet still got the rear vertical boot panel to do aswell. You can see where i started from in the wheel well and worked forwards, abit messy you see :2Rolleyes once you get the hang of it you can cut bigger peices and work with them instead but the wheel well itself was a mission. The off cuts come in handy for filling gaps aswell ;) Ey i\'l tell you what you dont half get backache installing this stuff!
Yep, i\'ve done 2 complete cars in the past including roof on one and it takes a long time to do in all dodgy positions. Be ready to cut your hands to shreads when doing the doors !
Shaun
Can you come and give me a helping hand then? With your experience and my thin arms im sure we can get it done pronto :)
I wanted to get the db tester off you aswell to see what difference it makes before after, if i can borrow it. We shall have to test it at Mascrat ;)
You may be ok with the doors on the rex, i think the cavity isn\'t too bad. Getting the doors off isn\'t too bad either. You can borrow the tester for a while if you want to :p
Cya soon :)
