Title: Full length Tonneau cover for a Cab
Post by: Thud on April 14, 2006, 08:49:31 AM
Never seen one of these before, was it a Mazda option? :

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4629761347&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

Not sure how useful it would be, especially in the UK where the first time it was used in the public some Johnny Thief would be inside it faster than a rat up a drainpipe.

Still, could be worth a punt for rarity value alone.  :Giggle

I haven\'t seen this before either - I got a crappy silver plastic one when I bought mine - had more holes that a kitchen sieve  :(

Seems like we might have a wee bidding war then  :Tongue1  :mmmm

BTW - do you guys know whether the front part of the roof is detachable - I have seen a picture in an RX7 book I have showing just the rear portion of the roof up.  The front section was removed giving the car a kind of \'Targa\' look to it.

I don\'t have an owners manual (looking out for one) and the Haynes doesn\'t mention it.

Cheers,

Prof

The centre section does come out yes, where the roof folds there are to abs plastic covers, take them off and there is a mechanism underneath, think there are some retaining bolts, but just get rid of them!

Tempting, and so close as well. OTOH the boot\'s almost full with the normall roof cover...

Fascinating thing!  Never seen a full cover either - would be surprised if it\'s a genuine Mazda option item, but I guess it\'s possible??!  Looks like it fits the UK spec headrest size only though!

Getting the "Targa\' section off flumoxed me too until I had some instructions!   :eek Hope this helps! :Thumbs-up

1. Grab a willing assistant :) The roof\'s heavy and it\'s almost impossible for one person to release both hinges without twisting the roof and it clipping itself back on!
2. Lower the convertible top fully in the usual way
3. Instead of sliding the Hinge Lock Button (driver\'s side) to fold down the hard top as you would usually - leave the hard top protruding up at 90 degrees.
4. At the base of the hard top there\'s a hinge each side.  If you are lucky you\'ll still have the plastic hinge covers (they are often lost).  If you do you will need to use a pointed object (Mazda manual recommends the tip of your car key), to release the centre of the circular push clip.  Push the centre and the clip will release, then the hinge will come off.  Repeat for both sides. Stash them safely! :D
5. On the hinge, there\'s a small orange lever by pushing this you will release the hard top section. (The lever swivels a ratchet hook off a pin)
6. The final stage is with your assistant holding the other side, slide the Hinge Lock Button (on the driver\'s side) upwards in the direction of the arrow and hold.  The hard top will now come free.
7. Fitting is reverse.
8. If you\'re lucky enough to have the hard top storage bag with the car, you can store the top in the bag and it can be stored in the boot, held in place by the roof storage/luggage straps in the base of the boot.  However Mazda recommend that you don\'t put any luggage on top of it, to prevent damage.  If you want to store it off the car, they recommend standing it vertically on it\'s front edge (the windscreen edge).

Incidentally, I\'ve never been able to make mine fit in the boot - it\'s like a huge jigsaw piece.  :eek  But by the illustrations it should be upside down i.e. inside facing upwards and with the front windscreen edge of the roof facing towards the back of the boot!

Good luck! :D

Thanks for that - I\'ll have to wait to get the car back before experimenting with the roof - if I\'m feeling brave enough !   :2eek

You must have an owners manual  :cool

I see no ones bid yet... :)

Not really sure - the one that came with the car was like a thin aluminised plastic and had a bad case of swiss cheese if you know what I mean - thing was full of holes.

Are you selling one ? If so, is yours the full cover or the short cover just covering the roof when it\'s down ?

I tend to just drop the hood down and ride around with it uncovered - at least when it rains you can get the roof up quickly  :cool
but it might be nice to get a cover for the sunny days...

That ol\' boy in sussex must be out on the lash tonight !   :guinness  :guinness  :guinness

mine is just the short cover for when the roof is down - its held on with about 10 prestuds

mine is full leather and in very very very good condition - i bought it for the cab - but then sold it - so its just sat in the loft now

so you have the wind cheater for yours that sits behind the seats ??

Bit of a hijack sorry!

what can i say mate! just couldnt let that FD go Stu, besides i was getting bored of the bora.  its amazing how many women have snapped thier knicker elastic since i have had it. heh.

i will have to sell that FC cab, so i can buy a nice little runaround - bit of a shame really with all that work i put into it. I only want the cover so its like a complete car, but im not fussed if i have to sell it without. i will PM you tonight, try and think of a price!

Sounds good Stu - but if Turbonuttah wants first refusal that\'s ok.

I have the wind cheater thingy - although it\'s mostly down, as I actually like the \'old sports car / bad hair day / baggy shirt\' thing going on  :Laugh

Let\'s see what happens with TN - if the price is too much for him, then I might be interested in the short hood as its leather.

Cheers,

Prof.
