Title: Number plates: options & where from?
Post by: scooby_si on October 15, 2003, 05:49:55 PM
now judging from the pikkies of me car in Japan it\'s clear there is the brackets, or whatever they\'re called, for attaching a plate. However dont fancy idea of it blocking up the front end & i wanted sumin a bit nicer looking, tart that i am.
So i have seen some RX7\'s with a bracket that raises where plate is above the intercooler space thing. I also quite fancy trying the stick on plate route & seeing how the local coppers take it....;)
So anyone got any options & places that sell them &/or stick on plates etc?

The number plate turned up ok, looks great. I need to clean the car and stick it on, but so far I\'m happy with it.

Did you have to ring them up for the stick on number plate ?  I looked at their web site and could only find fixed ones.

Some thing about having a block of plastic blocking the airflow in to my engien makes me want to remove it, even though it is now technically a motoring offence (fine only as far as I\'m aware).

I\'ve not had a front number plate since mid-August, and have yet to have any problems - and that includes driving next to, behind and toward police cars.  I\'ve passed a fella with a camera, and the wavey down guy a mile down the road didn\'t stop me.  So far, so good...

I got stopped 3 times in a week for that, and got a £30 fine.

I bought a front and rear plate for my \'2 from these people....

//www.fancyplates.com

...they\'re for "show" use only, but the will make them to custom size, your own designs, marks, Euro/GB sitckers, etc.  The plates I got back were perfect.

The plates I bought use the standard font, standard spacing, standard Euro/GB blue flag on them, etc.  The only difference being the size of the plate itself and the lack of any postcode, etc on the plate.

Cheers,
Si.

I think as long as your stick on plates don\'t have silly fancy fonts then I think the coppers will turn a blind eye, I\'m thinking about getting one for the front as the one I have does block the front grill intake area a lot.

I\'m having a nightmare with mine! :(

Nowhere in my town makes rear number plates sized 340x160mm which is what I need for the rear. Surprising as the old rear number plate says halfords on it!

I\'m going to get a stick on front plate I reckon. At the minute it has it shoved in the front window and have been past many police with no probs.

I now have 24 hours to get the new plates as I have just been to the DVLA office to get my private plate assigned.

Ideas?

cheers

Gareth

I\'ve had a stickie front plate for a while now, Even got cornered in an industrial estate whilst attending a street race!!!! Coppers didn\'t look twice!!!!
I think they can see that I\'ve gone to the trouble to put one on so they don\'t complain!!

In the end I\'ve just ordered mine from //www.ukautoplates.com £27 for the rear and a stick on front one with next day delivery.

I couldn\'t believe how much of a problem it is getting a rear number plate in the right size! How do people get on when they bring them into the country?

mine has a \'normal\' UK size square rear plate, which hangs down a bit - i\'d like a proper sized one ideally though.

cheers,
alex

Never had a problem getting plates. All I do is go to Cliffords in Brighton, ask for Jap size plates for front and rear and pay them £20. Tried Halfords once - twit just said "don\'t do imports", which is exactly the same answer AA Service Centre gave when I asked about an exhaust for a 2.5TD Pajero. Same part number as for a UK spec 2.5TD Shogun - but still insisted they couldn\'t do it.....

when i get my greasy mits on my 7 i\'ve got a few ideas that i need to look at plate wise , on the front i want to angle the plate so it can be read from a car but hopefully not by a speed camera , on the back i was thinking of getting a flip top plate , there designed fo bikes but hopefuly should fit , there hinged in the middle and when you flick a switch the plate folds in half

hopefully these measures plus my origin b2 wil save my license from more points ( love to know the feeling of having no points again )

Are bike plates legal?  If so, i\'m just gonna grab one my front and get it stuck on :D

I\'ve put a tiny plate on the front now , its attached by velcro and the standard ones stuck in the boot so if any coppers give me a tug for it I just tell him I left my show plate on by mistake and plead for forgiveness :cool

so to summarise NO they are not legal! :p lol although as a jap import with no decent mounting points you should be able to get away with a slightly smaller one, sizes on DVLA somewhere can dig them out if needed?
