Title: Suggestions for small gauges, please...
Post by: elford_tim on April 12, 2006, 11:54:20 AM
As most of the FC-heads around here will probably know, it does seem to be almost impossible to get pillar gauge pods to put on the A-pillar in a RHD FC, let alone a convertible. I know I can get LHD pods but that\'s of not much use to me...

The \'mericans have someone who makes a mickey-mouse ear "overlay" for the main gauge cluster to hold two gauges but that\'s too ugly to contemplate for me.

So unless someone has a source for a three-gauge mounting pod for an FC convertible, I\'ll have to mount the gauges somewhere else. I don\'t want to put them in front of the idiot light cluster for various reasons but I\'ve still got the cubby hole available below the single-DIN head unit.

That got me thinking - if I can get a couple of gauges (water temp, combined oil temp/oil pressure and boost) that are small enough to fit in there, I\'ll have a go at making some kind of fibreglass gauge holder that\'ll fit in there. Unless someone\'s already making a single-height DIN cluster that can hold three gauges...

Any suggestions, anybody?

Thanks,
Tim

Thanks, that pretty much looks like what I had in mind, only that (a) I\'d put them below the radio so I\'ve got a chance of getting CDs in and out and (b) I\'d try to angle them towards the driver...

What size gauges did you use? 52mm? Or smaller?

Ah, that\'s better - //www.gaugeshop.co.uk has an angled mounting plate for 3x 52mm gauge that\'s supposed to fit a DIN slot. For 12.99 that looks like it\'s almost worth a try...

the only reason i didnt mount mine UNDER the radio - as they would be toooo low

and you can still get CD\'s in ( only in 2nd and 4th though !! )

i got my dad to get a 52mm hole cutter and it took us about 3 hrs to make it - it works and it was cheap - what more can i say

i will check the link to see what they are offering :D

***edit ***

next plan is to remove the top heater vent and try and get 2 more in there - that way i will be running

1 - oil temp
2 - oil pressure
3 - water temp
4 - AFR
5 - volts

that should show me enough of whats going on in the engine :D :D :D

Don\'t forget the CCTV camera under the bonnet :rollin

It\'s the "in second and fourth" part that I don\'t like. I agree that the mounting point is sub-optimal (which is why I\'m still hoping that someone can point me at a pillar-mount pod for the FC) but it wouldn\'t be too hard to swap around the radio and the gauges if it gets on my nerves too much.

I\'m extremely short of time, hence my willingness to cough up 12.99 for a simple bit of plastic instead of making it myself...

short of time ???????????

at the end of the day - i dont change CD that much ( if ever ) so that doesnt bother me to be honest

i have seen the pillar posts but im not that keen on them to be honest - and i think it would be a fair task to get the oil temp and oil pressure wires to them - where it is on the dash its all nice and neat ( he says !! - i have to rip all mine out to refit the new gauges )

that will be a challenge :(

let us all know how you get on :D
