Title: Lost Horse Power, Help???
Post by: yogibear on April 09, 2006, 03:56:05 AM
Hi All
Right had my car on the rollers for the first time today and the figures have kind of shocked me. The Car only made 166bhp at the wheels. I was expecting a lot more than this with the mods ive carried out recently. Some of the other lads believed the road was reading about 20bhp down but that still doesent account for where the rest of the power has gone.

The mods I have are as follows.
Apaxi Twin induction kit
Knightsport ECU mapped for 1bar
Knightsport boost controller set to 1bar
Streight through down pipe
Streight through decat pipe
Blitz back box

The other thing I believe is worth noting is that the peak power was at 6000 rpm and dropped off 10bhp at 6500rpm so the garage didnt test it at 7000, or 7500.

Any advice would be appreciated. Think im gonna need to make a trip to a specialist but any help would be great.

Niall

2nd tubbie not wanting to play?

Are you able to post up your graph?

If ther car has a stock engine (unported) that would explian peak power, as above 2nd turbo not working or vacum leaks etc

Still totally confused because the second turbo def comes on line at 4500 ish rpm

Abouve is a copy of the power graph. It starts at 2000rpm and goes up in 500rpm increments.

The engine is totally standard apart from the mods listed above.

Strange that your graph even goes past the stock rev limit? but it does look as though your 2nd tubbie is working.

Where the boost pressures ok?

Hi again.

Did some more experimenting and my boost controller read out is still only getting to 0.55 bar with the boost set to 1.00 bar. So I suspect that it is not boosting properly. So any suggestions as to why that may be would be appreciated. A friend has suggested it may be something to do with the wastegates. Oh and with regards to the power graph it starts at 2000 and the last reading is at 6500 with peak power at 6000, couldent change the numbers on the X axis to rpm. So yeah any help would be gud.

Thanks
Niall

That graphs looks suspect to start with! I mean, it seems to suggest that it goes up to 10,500 rpm! I don\'t think your engine is likely to be doing that!

Secondly, those knightsports ECU\'s are apparently rubbish, and really not worth bothering about - I saw a power curve from one at Pips, and it produced less power than stock! Pip said it should be ditched immediately, as it was running very lean.

Secondly, assuming those graphs axis are just wrong, then it doesn\'t look like the second turbo is coming on line. There\'s no noticeable dip - but the graph is pretty poor, so it\'s difficult to tell. If you\'re only getting 0.55bar boost, then it\'s unlikely that you are getting the 2nd tubby to come on.

If i were you, i\'d remove the knight sports ECU, replace with either standard ECU and Apexi or similar, remove the boost controller, and start troubleshooting from there.

Right ive updated the power graph to try and make it a bit clearer.

As I said before the graph starts at 2000rpm and goes up to 6500rpm
Thanks

Yes, there\'s a very slight dip at 4,500rpm. But it is only very slight. However, you did say you\'re only producing 5.5bar of boost on the first turbo. When on normal boost it will dip to 0.5(ish) bar of boost. So it looks like it may have done that correctly, but in general you are lacking overall boost. This is the issue that needs sorting out. You need to get primary up to 0.7 bar. Look for vacuum leaks in the hoses, etc, maybe split pipes.

5.5bar of boost? I hope not  :2eek  :p

Graph looks fine to me, you obviously have a boost problem though which explains your power figures, he wouldnt have bothered taking it to 7-7.5k rpm since the power was already dropping off, its understandable.

I had a feeling it was a boost problem. Swapped my knight sport ecu over for the stock one and went out and the peak boost reading had dropped to 0.34bar. Think im gonna put the knightsport one back on as it went up to 0.55bar with that on.

Also when it was on the rollers I had the garage check the mixture and it was running quite rich so i feel safer with that ecu fitted.

Where do I start when looking for a boost leek then??? Ill have a go at fixing anything

thanks

5.5 bar...er....ok! dur....

Still, formula 1 cars in the 80\'s used to get 4bar of boost, so why not!? :p

Have you adjusted the gain on the boost controller? if not doesn\'t matter what you set the boost to you will only get .6 bar at the very most.
I haven\'t had a play with the knightsports boost controller for a little while but when you set the boost if you press I thinks it\'s the set button again it will show 00 which is where you set the gain. Set the boost to approx .8 bar and set the gain to about .25 or so and it should give you about 1 bar of boost.

Right no I hadent set that option on the boost controller. Tried to set it but cant get it to hold the setting I program in. Is there a particular way you get the boost controller to save . The boost setting that I had programmed in saves but not the gain.

Also I started working my way through checking all of the hoses and tubing for splits search for the boost leek. Done all the way from the Y turbo joint, to the intercoller and round to the inlet manifold and cant find any leeks so far.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
