Title: Help - I need some detective work on my FD!
Post by: Adriansturgess on April 05, 2006, 03:16:38 PM
Can anybody help clear something up for me? I\'ve got a J reg FD (type X). It\'s obviously had a bit of a front ender at some time in its life, although it looks and drives fine, there is evidence of welding to one wing under the bonnet (this has been neatly done). Also, although the car is black, stone chips to the paint work reveal that the wing is red underneath and I would say the whole car has probably been resprayed. There is also evidence of original red paint to the rear spats and at the bonnet stay hinge where it rubs slightly. The registration document states it is 2354 CC even though I would assume it should be 2616CC. Is there any chance that it really could be a 2354CC? It is definitely a twin turbo (cause you can feel the second turbo coming in at 4500 RPM). Also does anybody know where you go to check out the VIN, Engine Number and even the paint references? Its all logged on the sticker inside the drivers door: External colour PX, Internal Colour FE4. Engine RE02, Displacement 13B. I have a bit of a dilemma with the engine with regard to insurance, because if it is really 2616 but the registration doc states 2354 can I be blamed for providing misleading information?  If it isn\'t the original engine then how would I know, because all the engine references that I can see are placed on the car bodywork. Is there any reference on the engine itself? Anybody with any bright ideas on any of the above?  :xconfused

Im going to be guessing here but on the V5 shouldnt it say the engine number? if so you could check to see if thats correct. I would suggest someone has registered the engine size wrong when it was imported and a simple letter to the DVLA with the V5 filled in for the appropriate changes and you\'ll be away :)

2354cc is the cc of the FC engine and 2616cc is the size of the FD engine.  The only reason for the difference is that they upped the cc equilivant (sp?) for motorsport and so the V5 follows suit.  I wouldn\'t imagine it is the FC engine as they mount to the chassis differently.

Thanks for the feedback. I must say I hadn\'t realised that the FD and the FC had the same capacity engine - I think that\'s what you\'re saying? So is it just that the FD is putting out more power due to the twin turbo\'s that led to it being rated at 2616 rather than 2354? Or am I not understanding this right?!  :Hammer

FC\'s are 2.3 and FD\'s are 2.6  :driving The capacity of the engine will not change because of turbos, its the capacity of the swept rotor stroke, (I think?) Like a 2 litre car would have a piston volume of 0.5 litres on a 4 cylinder car. Hmmmmmmm not explaining that at all well :Typing  :Hammer

Yes, but I thought the 2.3l and 2.6l stated capacities were just figures dreamt up to give an equivalent capacity to a conventional piston engine based on the (higher) power output of the engine in relation to its size and that the actual swept volume was actually 1300CC in the case of am FD (not sure in the case of an FC). I thought I understood all this but now I\'m feeling confused.  :xconfused

The way I understand it (which means I could still be wrong!) was that the rotors still have the same capacity.  Therefore Mazda rate both engines as a 1308cc as the cubic capacity is 1.308 liters.  Sort of gets you into a much wider discussion of people wanting to get their cars registered as a 1.3 rather than the 2.3 or 2.6 for the FC and FD respectively.

The rotors in both FC and FD are the same, each rotor has a swept volume of 654cc. So 2 rotors = 1308cc. The powers to be decided to base it on a factor of 1.8 which gives 2354cc. This was then changed to a factor of 2 giving 2616cc. :Hammer

^^^ Wow, I\'ve never heard it explained so clearly. NOW I get it!!  :cool

But..... this takes us back to why the factor was upped from 1.8 to 2 for the FD and was this just because of the extra power of the FD (due to twin turbo\'s etc)?

I always believed it was to do with motorsport regulations changing.

I just hate the fact that all non rotor type people say \'well you should be classed as a higher cc because of your output\'.  Well in F1 today they have 750Bhp V8\'s where as in the 80\'s V8 turbo days they had 1,500Bhp, but they never doubled the CC!
