Title: gearbox problems and questions
Post by: richard cash on April 05, 2006, 11:20:25 AM
im still running in my newly rebuilt rex but am worried about the gearbox. There is a crunch when i go into 5th gear sometimes and i really need to time th egear change right for it to go in smoothly. Not too much of a problem i thought but then after putting on the miles in the car its was time to increase the revs to wear it in more and now i notice one sometimes when changing into 4th. it will only crunch in 4th at over 3000revs but 5th will crunch at over 1500rpm unless im careful. I also found out that when coasting the car in neutral down a hill and then slip it into 5th at 30mph say, it wont go at all it just crunches again, 4th is very hard too and i have to tend to go into 3rd and then work my way up the gears. If i keep it in gear though and just press the clutch in and then out then there is no crunching. Is this the synchros????

Im assuming that im going to need a new gearbox, especially as the engine is more than standard but should i go with a secondhand fd one or get a mk3 supra box. Ive spoken to matt at rxmotors and he said they do a conversion plate or something similar to mate the supra box to the engine but would it be worth doing.

i hope someone can help as the time to get the car mapped is nearing and i would like it sorted before then :)

i forgot to mention, i had a new clutch in at the same time as the engine rebuild. There is a slight grinding noise when i start the car, its very discrete as my girlfrend couldnt hear it, but i can. When i press the clutch pedal down it does away. Then i noticed that after an hours driving on the motorway in 5th i got to some junctions and i could hear the grinding in 1st and 2nd gear too. like i said it was quiet in neutral and louder in 1st and 2nd but still nothing like as loud as normal engine noise. Is this normal or could this be related to the gearbox problem also.

Did you replace the throwout bearing? Did you replace or renew your hydraulic fluid? Did you bleed the clutch line?

These are things I would answer before making that kind of call on the transmission.

Sometimes the answers are simple.

Well, the noise could be the release bearing ( throw-out bearing).

Could also be the pilot bearing.

Who did the engine rebuild?  I am surprised they didnt recommend you replacing these 2 (cheapish) parts.

rx motors rebuilt the engine so id have thought they would have done things properly. I did get them to replace the release bearing as when i bought the car the guy had one spare ready to put in (perhaps he thought it was the the bearing making the noise).

im not very knowledgable with the transmission parts and just assumed if the gears are crunching in 4th and 5th that it would mean a buggered gearbox.
