Hi, since I need a new mid section and back box Ive been looking at the Dragon De-Cat and Ive just found thier Cat back exhaust too
http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=10315
If I go and fit this (had a cat on previously) should I get the car remapped? Not exactly flush at the minute but my vague knowledge of tuning cars would suggest it might be running lean if I de-cat it, that right? I know Im skint but Id rather pay for a remap than an engine rebuild...lol
Whats the going rate for remapping? I know the scooby lot paid out about £500ish for it which I thought was rather expensive
Thoughts appriciated, thanks
Ohhh and anyone whos had the Dragon Exhaust like to give me an idea what its like? What sort of extra power does de-catting it give?
Hi Dave,
I have put some posts up about this in the past, I strongly believe that any exhaust change should be matched with a tune - work out where you want to go with the car first - this is the most important thing to do!!! i.e. you may need other mods. to support the changes you make to the car - like exhausts.
I would personally have it mapped (obviously it depends if you have an aftermarket ECU)...will the fuel system supply enough after the changes, etc etc..
Well I\'m running 0.9Bar with an Apexi PFC and HKS filters at the mo, thats pretty much it. 325bhp on WGT\'s rollers with the cat still in place. So All Im really doing is fitting the de-cat pipe rather than a full exhaust.
Again I think that it should be re-mapped, you will be surprised at the difference that de-catting makes. Especially considering it is already modified. If it is running 0.9Bar now, that will probably increase somewhat with a free flowing exhaust. Boost spikes/creep become an issue.
I believe the Apexi will compensate a little, but I don\'t believe it is the same as having it mapped for the specific changes made.
My theory is to always air on the side of caution! if you are going to do something - do it properly, don\'t cut corners as it will come back to bite you! :)
I could always lower the boost on the apexi to compensate for any increases I see with the de-cat?
Whats the going rate for a remap then at somewhere like WGT? Id guess its easier to do with an Apexi fitted rather than messing about from scratch? Sorry for all the questions, Im fairly new to the tuning game of rex\'s
I know of a few twin-turbo FD\'s, who\'s owners have removed cats etc. - and haven\'t been able to control the boost at the standard wastegate set-up is not big enough to vent all the gasses when required. Even with an Apexi, and even with a seperate boost controller etc.
Speak to some of the tuners on here (maybe they will even reply for you) - see what opinions they have.
oki doki, thanks. I think I\'ll give Dragon a call later today and see what he can tell me :) probably easier to do over the phone.
Thanks for your input :)
Spoken to Ross, he said it should be OK, probably better to get it mapped in time if need be but you should be fine was his overall opinion.
So Ive ordered the back box with Titanium tip and De-Cat pipe, if I start to see any sort of Spikes or Boost creep I\'ll pop into WGT for a mapping session. Would like to get it done anyway :)
Hi Dave,
I had similar mods to you and went to WGT to have a decat fitted. When Pip put it on the dyno it was running lean at the top end so I ended up having to get a bigger fuel pump and larger secondary injectors. If you cant afford that then you could always lower boost to a safer level but then that defeats the object of having it decatted.
Rich
Hi Rich, thanks for the comments. If you dont mind me asking, what was the damage to the wallet for the fuel pump and secondary injectors? might just spend some cash on it.... get the reno 5 sold and pump it into the rex :D
If memory serves me right the pump was 100.00 and I had 2nd hand 1200 injectors for 250.00 all +VAT. I\'ve heard some people saying they\'ve had problems with 1200 injectors but mine are still going strong a year later. I\'ve probably tempted fate saying that now.
Rich :Thumbs-up
Is that fitted? Scared of seeing some cheap parts telling someone to fit them and seeing an invoice for £1000 ;)
That was just the parts. I\'d say 1-1.5 hours labour so estimate another 100+VAT to fit. The garage may charge you more if they haven\'t supplied the parts.
Rich :)
Thanks for the help Rich, I plan on having it mapped before the end of summer so we\'ll see what happens with it :)
