Title: turbos cooling down after a run
Post by: vxer on April 03, 2006, 04:01:38 PM
Hi Guys,

After driving hard for a while, is it ok to cool down for the last few minutes of the journey, i.e. <3000rpms... Or do you absolutely have to stick to letting the car idle for a couple of minutes when you\'re stationary?

Cheers, Paul.

So long as you\'re staying off boost, then it should have the same effect as leaving it idling.

Next stupid question  :) What rpm range is off boost for both turbos?

Ta, Paul.

Boost depends on pedal pressure.  You can drive along at 3000rpm or 4000 rpm and still be off-boost.  If you have a boost gauge you can keep an eye on it.

Also if you have the normal twin turbo sequential set-up then no real boost is produced up to 2000rpm.

If you have uprated breathing you should also be able to hear the air filters sucking harder when the car starts to boost, it\'s not a bad indicator until you can get a gauge, plus the blow off/dump/recirc valve shouldnt make any noise when you lift off if you havent loaded any boost on. (bit late to do anything about it by then though!) :)

Is it only under WOT that boost will come in, or can it come in at part throttle?

Ta, Paul.

Good idea.

Any recommendations for a good, accurate gague that doesn\'t cost the earth?

 :)

Also, might be worth getting hold of a turbo timer. No need to sit there while the engine is running, then. let the TT do it for you.

I got a Blitz boost gauge from Nemesis, seems nice and accurate :)

I drive gently for the last few miles rather than idling when parked as I\'ve noticed oil temps rise pretty quickly when stationary esp after a run when everything\'s pretty hot.

Cheers,
Alex

Just takes it easy for last mile or so. Our cars have water pumped through the Turbos, and when you stop, the water gets heated and then a convection current is created, so, cooler water comes up and the turbos cool down. Without this feature there is more likelyhood of the oil burning inside the turbo, and then the bearings run dry, and damage is caused next time you start up.

I often open the bonnet when I get home.
Someone said this causes more latent heat to build up, which I dont understand - I asked for the theory behind this but I dont think I ever got an answer.

Or just buy a turbo timer. I let mine countdown from how hard i have been driving, if I have been taking it easy then 30 secs at idle is more than enough. Hard drive I have seem times of 8 minutes or so to let idle

Get a turbo timer that doesn\'t unlock you car at the end of the countdown.
My blitz TT and my Toad alarm just don\'t get along.

8 minutes?? I\'m not driving my car hard enough then, the longest mine has ever told me it needs to idle for is 3 mins 30 secs..

Nope its definitely an FD, the engine is standard apart from uprated leads and an uprated rad..

My timer has a 1 min and 3 min setting but it doesn\'t allow me to put the alarm on.

Going to go for 3 mins as an add on for the alarm then I can leave it running, arm and walk away....then get people coming and telling me I left the car running ;)

Autometer (?) gauges are a pretty good make and not expensive.

Also if you want a turbo timer let me know as mine is coming out next week complete with FD wiring harness!

my tt used to work with my toad alarm and stay armed-for some reason it has stopped though  . i usually let it run for a minute and a half if it has had a chance to cool whilst driving, or 3 mins if i havn\'t taken it easy for the last couple of miles.
