I will be doing a service soon on the rex, just wondering what is the best oil i should be using, im using castrol 10-40 miniral oil at the mo for top up\'s.
Cheers
I understand that Castrol 10-40 mineral oil as you have mentioned is perfectly fine.
Having said that I have been topping mine up with a can of Castrol 10-40 and I am not sure if it\'s synth or mineral...
If it\'s the white can it\'s miniral, ive heard that miniral is fine. I know what crap fully and semi synth oil\'s can cause on normal 4 stroke piston engines. The oil burns and leaves deposits on inlet valves causing them to stick if you have a crap breating system, so its understandable that rotarys need good oil so i would say castrol and mobile 1 would be up there as good oil\'s
Yeah Castrol GTX mineral oil is fine and the cheapest option.
Rich :)
I\'m currently using Castrol GTX 10w40 mineral oil. I\'ve seen mineral recommended a number of times, so I decided I\'d follow that. And I have seen it mentioned a couple of times that synthetic isn\'t so good. So I\'ll probably stick to this.
Anyone know if Halfords mineral oil is any good for a FD? thats what im using at the moment.
I suppose it\'s not too bad. But I\'d look at using a better product in future. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. And I certainly think it\'s worth paying that little extra to look after your car.

God the debate that will go on for ever.
Statements like this make me wonder why all the top race teams
British F3 Championship
British GT Championship
British Superbike Championship
FIA World Sportscar Championship
Ferrari Marinello Championship
World Powerboat Championship
British Rally Championship
and car manufactures like Mossler etc are using fully syn oils.
Fully endorsed & recommended by former Ferrari Marinello champions Damax Racing, who use it in all their race & road going cars.
Other large Motorsports Giants that have bought and used Royal Purple inc
Jaguar Racing
Jordan
Something must be ok with synthetics.
yep!! this debate over which is better, mineral or synth has been discussed loads of times. Check out this thread and make up your own mind. Loads or rotarys are running synthetic these days.

mmm, im going to use Mineral - not out of choice, the warranty on my rebuild is invalid if I use Synthetic?! Read what you like into that

I thought the whole reason you can\'t use synthetic in a RX7 is because it doesn\'t burn. RX7s are designed to burn oil, and synthetics will leave deposits in the combustion chamber.
Ta, Paul.
No not all.
I thought the reason for mineral oil was that it doesn\'t react with standard Mazda oil seals where some synthetics can make the seals brittle and fail. There are aftermarket seals on the market which are fine with fully synth.
Is this true?
There are no different seals, but double ester oils such as Royal Purple will not attack seals but will actually keep them in good condition.
