Hiya chaps
just having a general moan really :( :( :(
took car for its MOT today - and failed again on welding
there is only 5 things ( and one is soooooooooo simple to fix ) - but still 4 things to weld up again
failed on the main chassis member - that need a u shapped plate over it
failed on some welding i did last year - forgot to weld one side down !!
failed on the side strip things ( i have no idea what they are called its the cill at the end of the day - the bit that the jack locates on )
and a exhaust bracket snapped - he told me to take it off as you cant fail it if its not there
i just really cant be bothered getting under the car again and welding it
the guy said about 2 hrs work tops - but he couldnt do it so thats out the question
im REALLY tempted to cut my losses with the car and sell it on
the car is sound - passed on EVERYTHING else - just the welding - and i hate welding at the best of times .. so 2 choices now
1 - sell the car ( not sure what she is worth to be honest )
2 - do the welding and possibly have the same prob next year
i really dont know what to do - the better half wants me to sell it and put the bike back on the road - and to be honest - im really tempted to do that
i dont use the rex ( under 1000 miles in the last 12 months )
clare even suggested selling the car , then im in a better position to buy an FD - now there is an idea
so who knows what i should do ... ?????????????????????
gonna stick a post in the for sale section and see what i can get for the car and then see what happens :D
Stu
Sorry to hear about the failed MOT mate.
Surely you have a mate near you that\'s also handy with a welder? That way, you invite them round and you kick each other\'s arses into gear and then you have a finished car - job done!
Then should you want to sell it then it\'s all sorted for the new buyer and will add a few ££ to the value!! :Thumbs-up
Have you considered option 3: Do the welding, and then sell the car: it would be worth more with an MoT.
Sorry to hear it bud. Was is Richard or Steve that did the mot ? At least you\'ve had a proper evualtion of the situation. I\'d personally stick with the fc and sort the welding out. I know how much it means to you and surely 2hrs worth of welding isn\'t the end of the world !
Shaun
thanks for the input guys
i know its worth more with the MOT - but im happy to price that into the sale of the car
this was like the final nail in the coffin to be honest - im really disapointed :(
it was tricky that did it - such a nice chap aswell
yeah he says 2 hrs - so thats prob more like 2 days for me
i dont know any one who can weld :(
its not a lot in reality - its the prep work that takes the time ...
im really dishearted by all this - good thing was - never checked the emissions :D :D
he says that its not in bad nick - but once rust has set in you are chasing it for ever - i dont know how long i can keep doing this .. :(
main prob is - is doing it on the drive .. if i had a large garage to keep it in - would be a lot easier .. i can jack it up - weld a bit come back to it and so on - where as now - its jack it up , weld it , rebuild it , put it back up drive and then this happens time and time again
i have sooooooooo many parts to fit to the car - but these has really upset me .. yeah its only a car - but at this rate i should have got shut last year
im seriously lacking the motivation at this time - i cant see the car making the next meet , RSIII or anything else to be honest
im just stumped ... plain and simple
stu :( :( :(
Don\'t loose the faith Stu! :king
I loose my wrag with my cars all the time, it happens, just the nature of the beast. Leave the car alone for a few weeks and see how you feel. Get your mates to take you to some of the upcoming car shows and im sure that will get you going "oh, I wish I had my FC to show off with!" Believe me it works.
Sit on it for a while (no, not literally!) I\'m sure you will come to the right decision :Thumbs-up
at this minute the right thing in my mind is phone the local scrappy and drive it there and leave it
dunno matey - i thought i got all the welding done last year - obviously not eh !!
hummmmm ... hell i dont know
maybe its time for some 2 wheel fun for a while ??
I know what you mean: mine was a heap of junk on sunday night, stuck by the side of the M25! Today, it\'s a different kettle of fish!
ha ha ha i know what you mean nik
maybe i need to sit for a few days and work out whats what - just bloody typical with RSIII round the corner - i dont think i stand a cat in hells chance of making it in the FC :(
more i think about it - more annoyed i get
Quotemore i think about it - more annoyed i get
don\'t think about it then! :D
Gutted for you about the MoT, I know how much of a wounder it can be :(
Had a floorpan actually fall out of a Beetle that went in for an MoT once, it was that rotten, so there\'s always hope! lol
However strong the temptation, you know you\'ll regret it if you let her go though â€" DON\'T DO IT!! There must be a few old-school local-type garages nearby that could sort you out a couple of hours\' welding â€" drop it off, pick it up a couple of days later and happy days! :3gears-rh (Had a local garage sort the Beetle problem in their lunchtimes and quiet periods over about a month and only charged £175 all in.)
stu buddy dont give up i know it is one of those sayings it\'s easier saying that doing it but you have done so much on your car to leave it now and also you have so many plans for it.
Could you not get any help from anyone or if you like i can offer what knowledge and spare hands and i am pretty sure jason would help to when we come over in a week or so.
And just remember how you felt last time you didnt have a rex.
Finally sorry it hasnt passed.
hummmm thing is - MOT runs out on 8th april
so it all needs doing before then ... i dont know what to do - and i dont want to spend more money on it to be honest...really tempted to fooook it right off and walk away from rx7\'s
too much hassle and too much of a money pit
Buddy, for the sake of a couple hours welding, get it done, whats it gonna be like £70 - £100 to get your car MOT\'d, personally i would say i expect that figure or more to have a 15 year old car pass an MOT. Get it done, use it for the summer and RS111 and then sell it after you have had some use!!!!
i asked the guy if they would do it - but they wont .. so thats that idea out the question
i know what you mean though
its just one thing after another to be honest , i dont want to do this to find out in 6 months that something else needs doing
at the end of the day its a 16yr old car with 107K on the clock :(
if they had quoted me £100 to do it then i would have done - its just they wont touch it :(
all they like doing it welding new cills on etc.. not patch jobs
Its unfortunate these days some people only are interested in doing the easy jobs. I would try yellow pages, get a mobile guy round, get it done and get it MOT, then decide. And, if you reckon keeping an FD on the road will be any cheaper, it most likely wont, although they probably wont need welding! I feel your pain buddy, but any car is not cheap to keep these days!! I would say thats a minor issue for a 15+ year old car.
i have been having a bit of a think - and i dont think the welding is the problem - its the time it will take to do it
if i could do it in a day then thats superb - knowing my luck it wont be a days job :(
im off this week from work - but the weather is TERRIBLE down here - but i might have easter off work and have a play then - i dont know if more hands make it easier or what .. knowing someone who can weld would though !! LOL
its prob not a big job to be honest - 2 of the things i can do - its the other 2 that looks the bigger job
i dont know - i might bob it into a local garage tomorrow and see what they say - if its £100 of work im happy - or if i can do some and they do the rest
i just REALLY dont want to spend a few days under the car again
good sign - is that all my welding from last year is standing firm - and not a problem at all :D :D
Quote from: grinder1 - sell the car ( not sure what she is worth to be honest )
100K+ FC, thats been patched and needs more patching, hmmm...no offence mate but either do it yourself so it doesnt suck too much more cash from u than it need to and then flog it - or strip and dispose of now and save yourself the cost of the mot. There are loads of FCs for sale (ok, most of them are rotten too!), its easy to fall into a very deep money pit with a rusty one - have no doubt that you WILL be in the same boat next year :3Confused Its brutal, but stripping/scrapping is the best thing for a lot of FC\'s in the uk atm - seena few with tickets that are down right dangerous!

im not breaking the car - that would kill me to be honest :(
the only thing i can think of is sell it
i dont know what its worth
i would be asking around the £800 for it , but that would be sold with EVERY RX7 spare part i have kicking around
car , piggy back ecu , lowering springs , safcII D1 , oil temp gauge , water temp gauge, oil pressure gauge , adaptor for oil stuff , 16 inch split rims ( must be rare never seen any like it ) - and everything thats in the car as it stand ( and anything else i find for it in the garage )
i dont know if i would make that for the car to be honest ???
its a bit of welding for someone and it could be a cheap toy ??
the engine runs fine , doesnt use oil or water ( apart from what it should ) starts from hot and cold NO problem
boosts fine etc..
i hate to say it - but ebay could be the way forward :( :(
i\'ll have a chat with an old friend and see if he fancies doing the work. He has a good welder and has patched his jags quite alot !!!
Hopefully he may be able to help.
Cya soon
Shaun
there isnt a great deal to be honest
Stu dont lose the faith mate! If I lived closer we could hold a welding weekend as I have about 2 weeks of welding to do to the morris minor to get it to rotorstock! And the rest.(eek).
See what Shaun comes up with and try for an mot. A going and mot\'d car is easier to sell and worth more.
Also with all the bits you have for it I know it would feel crap to do but it wold be better to break it financially. And if you are moving onwards and upwards into the grown up world of fd\'s then money in peace of mind.
Sorry it failed anyway. Was looking forward to seeing you smoke it up on the start line at RSIII for your 100mph showdown.
cheers, michael.
I know i lured him into the fd ring but i really want him to stick with the fc !!! I rang my mate and he an only really look at it on the 8th april. If it isn\'t too major maybe kev could lend a hand ? Just a thought ! (sorry kev if thats a bit cheeky :spank)
Shaun
thats the main point Michael - i wanted to so the 1/4 at RSIII - its been a 12 month build up and someone pulled the carpet out from under me :(
all is not lost yet - im gonna have a good think over the next few days and see what i can come up with - already had a PM from a member on here - so he MIGHT beable to help - he was asking what it failed on
to be honest - its pretty stuff all what it failed on - but like everything else its not THAT simple .. time and keeping the better half happy !!

Shaun
can kev weld ??? LOL
i dont know if tooo many people would make it tooo hard work or what ??
its just the hassle ( like i said ) .....
move car to front of drive
jack it up
remove stuff
do some welding
put stuff back
jack it down
put it back up drive
and repeat until finished
just need a bloody big garage now ( then rain doesnt stop play !! )
is that just another test of being an RX7 owner ??? - what will really annoy me is if i do all this and it fails on welding next year :(
I\'d say yes, he made his own manifold !!!!!!
Shaun
next years 12 months away :p just it it through this mot and then you will be happy again !
Shaun
Don\'t have a problem helping out Stu. Busy welding a trailer up at the moment for dragging the Cosmo around the country, once thats done there\'s no reason why i can\'t fetch it over this end. Won\'t take long once its in the workshop over a pit.
Kevin
hiya kev - you have a PIT ??? now that does make things very handy - thats the biggest pain - working on a car on your back
im in real probs now though - im away this weekend , MOT runs out on the 8th - at that point the car is stuck here .. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :(
and im sure that allan is over in your direction aswell ( Nr York his profile says ) - so i need to magic the car to you - get me , you and him on the job .. 12 hrs later - job done
now where\'s that magic powder gone ??
Stu
( tea time now - will check back later )
sorry to hear you failed the MOT dude.
but it isnt too long before another member comes along willing to help you out! big pat on the back to you Kev. Grinder is pretty skillful, he makes the meanest cups of tea! lol anyway stu, if you need to raise some cash then you can sell some bits n bobs in your collection to me mate!
Good luck with it man, you just have to persevere, (i thought that WAS the whole point about owning an FC!) dont blame you about not starting it in ****ty weather! thats been holdin me back with my project all week! just think of that cheesy grin you will have once your driving it down the road all sorted pal. :Viking
Read the post Stu! Part way through building a trailer as we speak started it sunday 80% finished now if i can get a early finish one night this week i\'ll be using it at the weekend to take the Cosmo down south for Brooklands so transports not a problem. From what your describing won\'t take me very long to do the work.
Kevin
wow, im always impressed with the stuff you do kev :god :god :god
I\'d hate to ask how much a trailer has cost you to build :p
Wow !!!
Shaun
Lets put it this way it won\'t end up costing me much more than a couple of tanks of petrol.
Kevin
Can\'t wait to hear the monster on the 22nd, oh yes :)
Shaun
Kev
1 - how can you build a trailor sooo cheap
2 - thanks for the offer that superb !! - how much are we looking at in juice ?? - all i\'m thinking is - you come here , us back to yours , then back here , you home ??
not sure how much that is in ££££££££££ for juice and what sort of time scale is all the travelling ?
the pit sounds ideal though - must be soooooooo easy to weld like that
the more i think about it - the more is sounds more of a pain in the arse job than a big job !!
Stu
I\'ll drop you a PM Stu.
Kevin
Carefull Grinder,Ive seen his welding............ :bandit
Sorry to hear about the setback. I\'ve got to say it\'s a long time since I\'ve heard anyone sound quite so depressed - it must have hit you hard! But you\'ll feel better after a nice cup of tea and a hug from your wife, oh and a sackful of anti-depressants for good measure. Seriously though, it seems like you\'ve got some serious offers of help so no excuses, get it sorted and see you at RS111 for the 100mph challenge. :)
Keeping the Cosmo together though isn\'t it! :driving
Any way about time you had another beer Era :guinness :guinness :guinness and anoyed the neighbours isn\'t it. Can\'t wait till the weekend and they get to hear a proper car. Get the superglue ready Era.
Kevin
Cool, Kev to the rescue! Its all gonna be fine stu. ...he, he, he.. mybe we should get Kev to wear the superman(efini) costume at RSIII for coming to the rescue!
I am off to bed before Kev sees this.
Too late Michael. Any way hows the moggy coming along?
Cant wait Mr.Yorks_Gordon,superglue is history, its the windscreen trick now !!!!!! :rollin
Doh! Hey Kev, dont get the wrong idea. Not that I want to see you in licra.
Moggy is moving ahead slowly as workshop is shared with a fully functional farm and they need it to fix stuff quite alot. But anyhow, chassis rails are welded up now, so is bulkhead. Also have finally sorted the rdiator problem. It is now located in the rear of the car. Just need to save for the 28mm copper pipes to run the length of car for water system.
Back to the fc. Just shows things can always be sorted Stu. I reckon it will be fine mate.
Oi! I go away from this section for 5mins and already you are throwing the towel in! If you scrap or sell that car i will walk naked up to Chorley and do star jumps in your front garden!
And remember with RS3 coming you now have a major advantage...rust is lighter than carbon fibre! :D
Seriously get it sorted or else. :spank:
Quote from: travellinbobJust need to save for the 28mm copper pipes to run the length of car for water system.
It will be much easier, quicker and cheaper to use Hep20 for your rad, any plumbers merchant will have it, its push fit, cuts easy, can bend, adjust, reuse. More frost resistant, do I have to go on.
they expand a fair bit tho when you get them really hot. but that plastic piping is good stuff, no waste! make sure you get the reinforcement fittings that go into the ends otherwise they might pop off.
Stu, i have a t2 shell that is pretty much solid if you want it for bits? i have a repair section for the outer sill (middle) too.
Anybody seen Grinder recently?
Quote from: AdriansturgessAnybody seen Grinder recently?
im in hiding matey !! :D
been an expensive day today - just spent over £3K on new windows for the house !!
then on the way home i spot a cosmo in the local garge - 36K on the clock 13b engine ( so not a tripple ) £2995 .. couldnt believe it
anyways back to my rusty rex !! LOL
i have had offers from kev and alban1973 to help patch her back up - so just need to sort it out with these guys to get her back into ship shape condition
i think where i went wrong doing the welding last year is that i patched her up rather than welding the whole lot together
looking like the seams of the cills need to be removed and completly plated over - this should stop it happeneing again ??
i have had more PM\'s of kev and allan than i can shake a stick at - so just need to work out which guy to pick - and to be honest - this is whats causing the problems !! LOL
hows that for a dilema - im annoyed that the car failed and now 2 people want to get me back in the rx ... i felt a lot of love on MRC in the last 24-36 hrs :D :D :D
if i can get the car sorted in the next month - then i can get the clutch done at pips and throw her down the strip to try and make the magic 100 mph figure :D :D
so thats about the size of it at this moment in time :D :D
Stu
God Bless MRC and all who share in her wealth of knowledge and the friendliness of its members :D :D :D
You\'re not kidding, I could feel the love from here. It\'s good that there are people in the club who will gather round and help out in these critical situations. I mean not long ago you were talking about walking away from rotaries altogether. That\'s serious need of help. ;)
its the first time i have really called for help .. im usally the one offering it
help sean ages ago put his engine back into his TII ( all the pipes and wiring ) , me and shaun have helped Mulv remove and fit a single turbo , me and shaun went to help chris ( prisspringle ) try and start his car ...
i just need the help to be honest - i think if i can sort this problem once and for all it will set me on good footings :D
not sure if you have come accross my other thread ..

Yay grinder! I was fearing it would be you not at the meets! :P
just need to get the car sorted and my happy hat back on :D :D
still have lots of plans for the car - but when it fails the mot its like a real swift kick in the nuts :(
if i get it all sorted out then i think this year im gonna make more of an effort with her and try and take her out more - the MOT guy said that keeping her on the drive prob did her no good..driving a car is a lot healthier - you keep the engine bay warm , the exhaust hot to keep the water out of it - the exhaust gets shut of any moisure underneath , you keep the brakes free etc...
so rather than using her once a month i might make a promise to take her to work at least once a week to keep her happy
Stu
( not sure why the rex is a "she" ??? )
hi stu Lorraine here im glad things r looking u for you both lol, cya soon
Well, At last Grinder we all know is back again, gone has the monster :2Mad demon telling him to give up and sell up, or even Scrap, :xconfused as was once mentioned.. Thanks to Kev he will be back on the road with a grin from ear to ear.. He has helped out a lot with other people, now it is his turn to be helped... Keep us all up to date.......... Result............................................ :rollin
QuoteStu, i have a t2 shell that is pretty much solid if you want it for bits? i have a repair section for the outer sill (middle) too.
On Stu\'s behalf i\'ll ask this one what where you after for the repair section might make our work a bit easier?
Kevin
yeh sure man, its yours. i can take a picture of it if you want, but its the middle section of the sill. brand new from the dealers. i bought it for a tenner so you can have it for that Stu?! if you look on the FSM it will become apparent (it can go on either side) and has holes for the body kit to fit etc. its primered in black.
Nas ,
get a pic up - i have no idea if it will help - Kev might have a better idea :D
Stu
dude please dont make me, its raining and it would be much more easy to go n look at your car! open your door and look straight down! its the *outter* sill section, you know the big curved bit going *between* the A piller and the C pillar where they meet the sill! lol trust me bro its a BARGAIN of the century! you dont even want to know how much it costs at the dealers, its three figures!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH right :D
only 3 things worry be about it
1 - i need to get it sprayed once its on
2 - im not sure if it will help or hinder us - that means putting the seam back in and it only exists on one side ( well it doesnt really exist at all - this is what it failed on !! )
3 - how the hell i get it from you
4 - from what allan said - its easier to remove the seam completly and just have a flat peice welded from the outer sill section to the inner sill section - this way no water collects on it - i think the probs with it is that water runs down behind the side skirts , collects here and rots everything ???
lets see if kev spots this and comments
the only thing we could do it pick it up taking the car to his ?? - im sure that we head past your way
Stu :D
( raining..its sunshining up across here :D )
i have even got a 4\'x6\' sheet of 1mm steel at my house, you can have half of it if you come round for it dude. that should see you plenty. i could post the sill to you, thats how it came to me mate. but it will cost another tenner at least on snail mail.
I dont think you should delete the lip. its where the floor / inner sill / outter sill meet. it increases the sills rigidity. i know you want to probably get this done cheap but dont do a "ghetto" job, it will cause you stress the next time. if you bothered about moisture collecting under there then make a couple of holes in the kit for drainage.
after speaking to allan - he says this is the best way to be honest ( remove lip )
it does increase rigidity - but prob not tooo much now :(
i dont want it doing cheap - i want it doing solidly and quickly !! LOL
and to put the seam back in will be a lot of work to be honest matey
i know what you mean though - i really do - surely it will add some stiffness with welding the inner and out seams together .. they come out the factory with just spot welds - im not sure how much strengh that has ???
depending on what kevs views are on this my plan is to
1 - remove skirts
2 - completly remove seam
3 - cut back what i have put in ( or use that as some sort of base
4 - weld in a full section say 4 inch wide full lengh of the car
5 - paint , underseal , underseal ... did i mention underseal
6 - rebuild that side
copy on the other side
then weld the U shape over the drivers side rail
and that SHOULD be it - all sold and looking neat
although im sure Kev will beable to supply better answers ??
Stu

I\'ll have a word with Stu getting the sill isn\'t that major a problem as i only live just north of donny at Eggborough. Away at Brooklands this weekend but i could always have a run to the Vue the following Sunday we could maybe get a mini meet there as there\'s a few of us in this area now. As regards sheet steel thats not a problem as i\'ve about 20 sheets squat at work.
Kevin
so Kev ,
you reckon putting the peice in is the way forward ???
if thats the case - them im up for that :D
Stu
Nas
i think Kev really needs a pic of that section you have
kev has a cosmo and prob no idea what the underside of an FC loooks like :D
