Title: Trailing Coil
Post by: grinder on October 10, 2003, 12:45:34 PM
I have a 1990 TII coupe

the Trailing coil ( top of engine passenger side ) is arking ( spelling ) between the contacts

i have been told to stop driving the car until its fixed ( which is purely a safety measure )

i have been told to check the plugs as if they are fouled up in any way it can cause this

now is this correct info ??

again i have been told to check the leads ( that should be interesting ) and check the coil

is there any correct way i should be doing this

and how easy is it to take the plugs out on a TII , does it need to be jacked up or can i do it from the top

Thanks

Stu

Stu,

Did the 1990 ones still have a distributor, or has it got full ECU ignition with ECU controlled packs. I\'m assuming the latter, but I can never remember if S4 and 5 got the direct ignition setups in UK or not.

Either way I have a spare I can lend you for testing.

Arcing is generally considered bad. Leads are usually a good place to start. Plugs are easy to remove from above with the right socket. Just pull the HT lead and look inside the hood. If its all black and carbonised, then you have a likely culprit.

Without seeing where the arcing is actually occuring it is a bit tricky to advise.

thanks bill

so if the leads are black and carbonised - is it just as easy to replace the leads ???

i will try and have a look at the weekend

i can see it arching between the coil but i have no idea what its like under load

it just i couldnt get the leads off the coil !!!

i will try and get some piccies to put here if i cant fix it

i have sourced a new coil from rx motors at £36 inc postage

any idea how much leads are to buy ??

thanks

36 Quid. !

Cripes. Don\'t pay that for it. If its a diamond coil I have piles of them like free. If its the twin post ECU controlled direct fire one I have 1 and can get more off ebay for around a tenner as they come up in the states quite a lot. My problem is I know when the US models changed ignition but not UK, which stayed clockwork a lot longer. Might be the coils PJ has for sale are the right ones as well.

To test the hypothesis just get cheapy leads. Best I find is to go to halfrauds and rummage around in boxes until you find ones of the right sort of length and end connectors. This way you only lose a fiver instead of 50 on max power super leads.

im gonna try and check the leads at the coil end tonight - and see what i can see

i have no idea how to describe the coil

oohhhh hang on - i will try and draw one ( this could be fun !! )

ok - its not the best drawing

BUT :

Blue : HT LEADS
Red Line : Arching

thanks

I had exactly the Problem you are seeing on my first T2, it turned out to be Leads.

I serviced it at the same time changing the Plugs etc and it was fine. Check the conection between coil and Leads.

I thought i told you this at Johns?

you did tell me this chris !

but when i looked at the leads to the coil , the lead had welded itself to the coil !

i have got another coil now and the car is running - yippppeeee

just need to get some leads now ( i have a lead that bill sent me , but its not the best fit - although it does work )

where do you get yours from chris - i do i just assume WGT ??

thanks
