I always thought it was infinity, after all I\'ve seen plenty of FC\'s with the infinity symbol stuck to their butts.

I was once told that infini was taken from the FRENCH  :eek:  word meaning infinite.

But why infinite anyway!  :3Confused

I was told ......

Efini was the "sports" division of Mazda in Japan. Cars like the 3rd gen RX-7, 323 awd turbo, etc were badged as Efini (or Infini). It\'s comparable to BMW\'s M-cars or Mercedes AMG.

Efini is like the Mazda "other brand" to help sell premium cars without the stigma of having a Japanese badge since the Europeans and Americans are so funny about that sort of thing.

Just like:

Toyota = Lexus
Honda = Acura
Nissan = Infiniti
Mazda - Efini

Quite a lot of the cars change their designation too Atezza = RS200, Fairlady = 300ZX so just be glad they haven\'t done that too.

Taken from wiki,

In the late 1980s, Mazda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda) diversified in the Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan) market with the launch of three new marques (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marque). The company created Autozam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autozam), Eunos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunos_%28automobile%29), and Ẽfini, in addition to the Mazda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda) and Ford (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Motor_Company) brands already marketed there. This experiment was ended in the mid-1990s.
 The Ẽfini name and logo are not to be confused with several  limited-edition second generation (FC) RX-7s, the "Infini" edition  (marked with an infinity sign), from the late 1980s. As a brand, it  encompassed most, if not all dealers formerly under Mazda\'s "Auto"  dealer chain. It\'s pronounced like infini with a French style pronunciation of the in.
 The Ẽfini marque was a sport-oriented brand, as opposed to the more comfortable, luxury (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luxury_car)-oriented  Eunos. Today, Mazda continues to use the Ẽfini name as one of the  company\'s dealership chains, along with Autozam, but the vehicles sold  no longer use it. This included the following vehicles:
