Title: Traction Control and...erm.... flusher oils.
Post by: SiCook on October 08, 2003, 11:15:43 PM
Hello.  I\'ve two questions to ask, one is a bit newbie, the other is also probably a bit newbie....

The regular oil  changes....  I\'ve been told that only particular fully synth oils can be used.  I\'m in the habit of using a flusher oil when I change the oil on my piston engined car.  Are flusher oils a bad thing for a rotary engine?

Traction Control is the other one.  I\'ve a RaceLogic variable slip launch/traction control unit.  At the moment it\'s programmed up for a piston engine but RaceLogic said they\'ll reprogram it for a rotary engine - so I\'m tempted to send it off to them and put it on the Rex.

There was lots of discussion about the fuel cut method used by the RaceLogic unit on my old car.   Are there any concerns that people have heard with running this type of Traction Control on  a Rex?

Lastly, two quickies....  I\'ve also got an Apexi AVC-R  and an ERL Aquamist water injection kit that will no longer be needed - I know people run the water injection, but the AVC-R - how do they perform with the twin turbo setup and is detonation still the big scary monster for rotary\'s....?

Cheers,
Si.

Hi Si,

The great oil debate with the rotary will rage on for many years to come.  You can use synthetic oil - but only stick with the brands that aftermarket companies recommend (like Royal Purple synth).

Mazda recommends mineral 10/30W for the FD RX-7, but 10/40W should be ok (as you can\'t get 10/30W Castrol) but you can get other brands - email clive@mazdarotaryclub.com, he can get you some 10/30W mineral oil, Nascar still uses it.

I have never heard of anyone using flusher oil on a rotary - doesn\'t mean that it doesn\'t happen. I personally don\'t think you would need to do it.

Racelogic is a tricky one, I know that many people are using it in the US on RX-7\'s but I also have heard of a few people having problems with it (causing them to lose engines etc.).  See what guarantees Racelogic can give you.

Aquamist & Turbo Rotary = great combination, if your intercooler doesn\'t do the job - Aquamist is a very good idea indeed.

Yep, detonation = dead engines with rotaries, unless you have stronger ceramic/steel seals etc. 3mm for example. - the stronger seals can handle the detonation better, but you really can\'t afford for it to detonate at all (like with piston engines, however they are a little more forgiving).

Thanks for the suggestions.  I\'m working on finding some off-street parking and then I hope to get it insured.  I\'ll give it an oil and filter change when I get it and check the plugs, air filter and the like.

I\'ll drop Clive a line as you\'ve suggested when I get the car.

I\'ll wait to hear more about the Traction Control - I\'ll see if I can track down the chats on it from the US.

Cheers,
Si.
