Title: lubricants and coolants
Post by: FD3SNuttah on March 16, 2006, 05:29:49 PM
hi all im changing all the filters / and lubes as well as the coolant - im going to flush the intercooler as well (with petrol).

question for you all in the know (with an rx7 handbook )

what do you recommend for radiator coolant? i already noticed that someone used the orange type of coolant in my RX. any problems if i use the blue? whats the difference?

I am going to use some 10w 40 castrol performance oil which im pretty sure is going to be fine (read oilman\'s thread in the tech section).

how about gearbox oil what do you guys use? 75w-90? what do you recommend i use in the Diff?

cheapest place to buy a decent high pressure fuel filter from?

edit it would also be useful to know the quantities needed.  i wish i owned a user manual!

i use GTX oil ( 10/40 mineral ) i think

and the rad coolant i use normal run of the mill stuff - and a lot of people reckon on 50:50 mix - something to do with keeping the internals clean - im not 100% sure to be honest ???

have a search

Anti freeze wants to be 50/50 as it acts as a corrosion inhibitor. Don\'t use the cheap pink stuff though. You want to be using Ethyl glycol which will be either blue or green.

I use Silktran Syn 5 in the gearbox and the diff. Its a bit clunky when you set off but its great stuff once you get going. Oil in the gearbox and diff are major factors !

I think i needed between 4-5 lts to do both gearbox and diff, but thats on an fd !

Plus if your really worried about cross contaminating the coolant just get the hose and flush the system out, let it run through until its running out clear at the drain point on the rad, then let it drain off and fill it back up as per standard refill instructions (have a look on search)

Hi,

TII Gearbox: 2,5 L
TII Diff; 2L

So you should be OK going with 5 L,

I would recommend to user mineral oil. Castrol GTX 15W40 is known to be OK for Rotary.

For ante-freeze, I would not recommend to fill up this pink stuff as it is used for aluminum- engine-blocks on new cars. Just go for that normal "green" or "blue" stuff as Kevin allready mentioned. I have made good experience with BASF Glysantin Protect Plus wich is avaliable here in Germany but no use about avaliability in UK.
When you replace your coolant with another brand, please flush your system with destilled water. You can do it this way:
Drain the water from your rad AND the engine! Fill up with destilled water ONLY and drive your car for 5 mins with HEATER set to max. Let the car to cool down. drain all the water from the rad AND the engine! Fill up with coolant and destilled water mix, enjoy your car.
