I posted this question in the technical section but had no responce, How many Elford owners are out there??? :god .... are any of them willing to help me on a few things??? :3Confused .. could anyone take some good quality photos of their engine bay as I would like to know how and where wires and pipes should go to, and see what i have missing.. I have been looking at all the parts I have with this car, I think I may have some bits missing, What does the ignition retard processer look like as I think this has gone walkies, can you get them or has anyone got an electrical diagram so I can make one?? Also I have removed all the original manifold and vac system from the engine I collected yesterday, so am ready for working out where all the elford parts go like the oil metering pipes, vac, breather etc.. are the exhaust mainfold gaskets the same as the standard ones? what spark plugs?? any help on this would be appreciated........
I\'ve seen the box of "electronics" on an elford before, its a very simple looking black box with a few wires attached ... not much help but thats all I can recall :)
I would have thought the standard engine to manifold gaskets are the ones you want
Hey Al, lets get the questions in order and specific, would it be poss for you to take pics so we can see what the condition of the motor is,then we can reply to what we see........always willing to help if we can.You may also pm me if need be..... :guinness
ERA--Mike, thanks for picking up on this one, spotted it and couldn\'t help, hence my post in your thread ERA sorry for the highjack but all in a good cause. :Thumbs-up
I have had time to play a little today. Have got all the parts out and test fitted them to the engine and found most of the parts I need to get it fitted. I will now clean the engine up fit it to the car, see if it will go and make sure I have all the correct parts related to the conversion. At least then if the engine requires rebuilding I know I have all the parts.. I have found out quite a bit of relevent info to the elford conversion. can you please tell me if I am on the right track......The black box i was relating to as the ignition retard module seems not to be that at all. From what i understand it controlled the interior light(useful) and cuts half the ignition if the boost achives 8.5 psi, this is controlled by a mechanical pressure switch.... I have got the 2 pressure switches. one of o.5 psi and the one of 8.5psi. Now, I have tested both, and they do not seem to work!!!!! could be the reason for the original engine going pop!!?? The o.5 one i think cuts the power to the vac advance solonoid ,,the vac for this seems to come from the top of the SU carb. is this correct, If i run the engine with the vac pipes disconnected from the distributor for testing purposes will it have the same effect??? and where do I source the switches from. the 8.5psi could be fitted to a warning buzzer or light as the black box is not present....I have tested the waste gate which was sezed but after messing around with it starts to open at 5psi and is fully open at 8psi..is that in tollerance?...oil feed to the turbo is present. there is a little copper pipe that runs from the botton of the inlet to the turbo, The sump from the elford has the breather attacted to it, i can see that one of the pipes that fits on to it comes from the bottom of the turbo, where does the other come from?? where do the two oil metering pipes go to? the fuel return/over flow on the carb is not used, but the breather from the top side of the carb, does that go to the oil fill pipe lower one, I think the higher one goes to the inlet manifold as it seems to have the correct size and shape pipe to that location... I will get some photos when i get the engine in of the relevent parts if the questions are not clear from a memory point of view..but any info at this point will be usefull to be going on with..
Update to my last post.... I have now found that the oil feed pipes from the metering pump go to the carb, where i thought the pipe went to the oil filler,,, does this mean the other pipe from the sump thingy goes to that inlet on the oil filler neck?? I did notice there was a problem with the oil meter pump link to the carb, it did not pull straight and wanted to twist a quarter of a turn as the carb butterfly was opened hence it was pulled off the ball joint connector, i\'m sure with a bit of messing I can sort it, but worth a mention..
