Title: interior paint
Post by: dwarfslapper on March 15, 2006, 10:47:51 PM
Just thought i would share a couple of pics of all my hard work over the weekend.
After a couple of hours removing the rubber coating and sanding smooth,
4 coats of primer and sanding again with 1500 grit wet and dry,
3 coats of pearlesent black followed by 3 coats of lacquer.
all done with halfords spray cans
very pleased with the outcome just need to remove the rest of the bits and do them.
will post more as and when i get round to it  :rollin

Pete its dead simple, takes about 1-2 full days to do it...the only problem is if you have never taken the dash out before, taking the plugs out of the clocks is a riiiiiite biatch!

Like i said, would prefer to have someone around that knows what he\'s doing. The spraying i can handle its just the dismantling that scares me!

Hehe...the entire dash is just a few screws! & only 3 different sizes aswell so easy to know what goes where. Its dead simple, like i said the only hard bit is taking the plugs out of the clocks, but thats cos im weak, so i get my older bro to do it, hes a sparky so knows what hes doing ;)

When i put mine back together i\'ll take pics as i go along and i\'ll post up a "How to take the dash out"  :)

i used halfrauds vinyl paint, i suggest against it though - some minor scratches showing already!

Just use halfrauds normal paint - 3 stage it, rub down with 800 grit, clean with solvents, 3 coats of primer at 20 min intervals, 3 coats of colour at 20 min intervals and 3 coats of laquer at same intervals.

Just make sure you get good coverage, you may need to use more layers. Remember though, you can spray lots of layers, but you cant get rid of runs - so apply thinly.

Yup. Plenty of coats of paint is the key. I tend to go for around 5 coats of laquer, though as this gives more of a protection from scratching.

Also, For interior plastics, I usually use a coat of plastic primer, then switch to regular primer. Then just use regular colour and finally laquer it. This is what I\'ll be doing on my RX (when I eventually get chance).

Hi Anthony
Thanks for the offer, but i\'ve changed my mind, matching the interior with the exterior,so that means taking back to the sprayshop. To much work involved concidering the paint the car is sprayed..
Thanks anyway
Pete

im having trouble with my dash, ive got the bits around the clocks out (without even removing the dials :)) and got the centre section out but i cant see how the door plastic is attatched to the door card. Anyone have any advice
Title: interior paint
Post by: Bobfish on May 06, 2006, 03:29:39 PM
you have to remove the door card to get the plastic off. See the factory service manual for details on how to remove the door cards...its not hard though.

once you have em off, you can remove the panels and spray em up nice.

There is only a few screws holding the door cards on  just remember to take off the 2 triangle pieces or the door card wont lift off
On the drivers side one screw is hidden under the door release handle.
The passenger side is the same + one screw behind the window switch.
