Hi
Just bought a XS power intercooler as havent got the money for the FMIC yet. Got to admit the build quality of the cooler and the pipework is brilliant for the money and will be 100 times better than the stock IC.
My problem is air intake, as the original duct is useless. Has anyone seen or heard of anyone that sells the air duct for these intercoolers or the Pettit Racing ones as I know they are both the same size?
Thanks
have you fitted it yet? hear you might have a couple of problems doing so.
Do you have a PFC? be interested in knowing if or how it effects your ACT... thanks.
fFitted it on Saturday, but the inlet temp was high as I have no duct in place giving cool air.
As far as the intercooler goes it fits fine with only a few mods to do to make it fit
Hi Ash
Do you have any pic you could email me gordon@japscene.co.uk hopefully getting one of this kits for my own motor soon... and will be looking to develop our own ducting... so ill have to keepyou up ot date how we get on with that..
Cheeers
Gord
Sure ill post it tonight
any one having any luck with these? are they worth getting?
on ebay now for £189 with the piping?
The installation pics on ebay look really bad - the guy has got one turbo intake *behind* the intercooler!
Guess thats not a feature of the intercooler, however - just a bad install...
Ta, Paul.
You can get both intakes in front of the Intercooler with a bit of moving around. They drop temps over the standard IC. Mine will be up for sale soon with all piping. Def worth the money
My current mods are, hks induction kit, decat, hks bov, so could i get one of these intercoolers aswell, but will i need to get it remapped at all?
I didnt when I had mine done. Checked with Geff at Re-worx ad he said it would be fine until you start really upping the power then you would need to
Just being looking at one of these on e-bay, when fitting the cooler do you have to remove the air pump and use an induction kit, due to lack of space?
just wondering what modifications you need to do to fit one.
Cheers
no mate everything stays where it is.
Only mods that need to be done are the air duct has to be removed comptly or trimmed to accept new IC
see below ( sorry for big photo ) this was mine before i started modding it under the bonnet
(http://www.essexracers.com/imageupload/885546.jpg)
The Induction pipes just need trimming to accomodate the IC
looks just the job mate, have you noticed any difference in performance or inlet temps???
Cheers
yes I have, driving 70-80mph at the mo in this weather im hitting 30-35 degrees which is a lot better than the stock IC. Im selling mine soon
I have seen XS power products used other cars inc. a friend of mines 450BHP
GTS Liner, and it seams to do the job really well especvially for the money.
If any of you are looking @ getting expensive parts for your FD\'s, have a look on ebay.com, even with the shipping costs from the states you can still save a packet.
Chris
Nice looking engine bay you have there aswell Ash
Cheers dude, looks a lot diff now. FMIC in at last

Ash how come smic only in a few months and changed ?
wondering what to do myself on IC looked at XS on ebay
Pete
I got the FMIC very cheap ad want to put a single in soon, so the only way forward was a FM. The XS ic are cool, a lot of people are developing them into V Mounts, and as Chris said al ot of other high power Jap cars are runnig them with great results
i\'m using the big universal XS power i/c in mine, works really well.
Ash
My problem is air intake, as the original duct is useless how did you get round this ?
looks like i will go for XS pic below of my bay do you see any problems ?
sorry for so many questions fairly new to RX world had evo\'s before these are a whole new ball game to me

Pete take the air duct out and about 1.5 inchs needs to be cut all the way round. Use a electric jigsaw as it will only take about 5 minutes to do. Once the duct is cut put back into its original place to see if any more has to be cut off. Its important not to cut off to much coz if you do the air wont be hitting the IC properly. After the duct is cut, use some gaffer tape to hold the duct against the IC. Cover the whole duct in tape to as much as you can cover. Therefore the air coming through the duct will enter the IC nicely. To be honest it doesnt matter what it looks like as you can cover the duct up after with the original Top panelling as i did in mine ( see photo ).
Any prbs give me a shout mate

Have any of you seen the XS power manifolds you can get form the states for the RX to take a single turbo? Come with a T4 flange and external gate, 2.9mm thick pipe work, T304 grade stainless and all tick welded, 3/8" thick steel used on the flanges aswell I think.
Sorry to hi-jack ya there:)

Be useless wont it as it\'ll be a left hooker?
I have noticed a few comments about LHD parts not fitting the RHD models, why is this?
Obviously the steering racks and the clutch connections are different, aswell as the brake system being a bit different, but I didn\'t think any of this would have been a problem.
Chris
Think about it, if you have a Down pipe for example that has been made for a car that has its steering colum on the LHD side it\'s going to have more room so oviously its a gamble if it will fit the same model but RHD so there is less room to clear things like the Colum ??
Its also basicly the same with brake servo\'s etc.
Quote from: davegttph1Be useless wont it as it\'ll be a left hooker?
they do fit but some times need a little tweaking, dont get a down pipe to match though, make your own.
That is a good point Grizzly, thanks. Ant do you know of anyone running a LHD manifold on a RHD engine? If you do do you know what sixe down pipe ethe are using? As I want to go with a full 3" system inc the down pipe.
It\'s a shame if they don\'t fit as they are so much cheaper over there
Chris
XS IC arrived today quick considering was in the usa on the 5th - only concern is boxes say RX7 FC3S what i ordered was for FD3S hope the same
Pete
mechanic came up with a problem - no brackets to fix it on with so getting some, worth anybody else buying one to sort brackets out before setting out to fit
Pete
You dont need brackets Peter. It fits perfectly with the bottom sub frame and the pipework keeps it in place securely

Yep mine said FC3s too mate. Fit fine though. Didn\'t need any brackets for mine either.
Chris:)
Ash & Chris - cheers for reply dougs worry was any movement chaffing IC he\'s a decent mechanic wont rip me off, other bit he has to figure out is my twin apexi induction kit fitting round it - i see Ash you have the hks mushrooms a bit less length than mine are
Pete
A lot less I have MCIC now :-)
Its actually harder with the mushrooms to fit in then the Apexis due to the surface area of the filter.
Just cut down the intake pipes to the desired length and should fit fine

Got the HKS \'shrooms on mine.
Had to cut down the RH pipe (by half) and then re-position at a 45o angle to sit in front of the SMIC (I know this isn\'t the ideal place, but I haven\'t noticed any problems). LHS one fits fine in original position.
Can sort a piccy our tonight if you need.

Worth mentioning at this point to shop around.
Got mine from eBay.com with piping for £85. You just cant grumble with that kind of money.
Ducting has been tried via someone on RX7.com. They used to sell them for about £80, but I cant find any now. If someones develops a kit there will be a few interested persons im sure. At the moment the only air to mine comes from the lack of inner wheel arches, which probably wont help much. Replaced the standard cover (with the little modification) to help improve the looks though.
Keep me informed! :)

Chris thanks would be helpful my RX is 1st doug has worked on so learning the oddities of them - given him cd of manual as a help
Pete
mechanic had a few problems fitting, didnt bother with brackets but when 1st fitted pipes/IC strut brace in the way so cut a bit off left pipe (as viewed from front) brace on ok,then found bonnet wouldnt close so has slightly tilted IC but now has an air leak from somewhere, induction kit is back on without chopping down.
also can someone tell me if boost solenoid is under upper manifold (rats nest) as has controller to fit tomorrow
Pete
Peter,
I have one of these I.C. sitting in my loft at the moment. I also have the apexi twin filters so would be interested in a pic of your install and what gains you had.
Cheers

Peter
Look forward to that
Thanks Peter
mechanic having problem still getting to fit he wont do a bodge job ever, wondering if pipes right ones all boxes said fc3s queried it with seller said using old boxes definately right IC and pipes for fd3s.wife took pics tonight but didnt come out i will leave early tomorrow and retake pics.
if anybody has good close pics of pipes/shapes as to where bends etc are love to see them
Peter the only thing that needs to be modified is the air duct.
The induction filters should be fine but a bit of a squeeze

Hi Ash
problems not the induction kit they are pretty good without chopping down its the pipes for the IC - from what wife said the 1 on the right is round going into oval shape where it fits onto the upper manifold and left 1 which should fit onto a straight part ends up going onto an elbow - have to leave early and call at garage on way to work retake photos begining to wonder if pipes are for fc3s and they must be diferent - dont know for definate if fitments are not the same for these 2 models
Ash will post pics when i get to work, too much to get done this week on RX before TOTB sunday dont want to go in hyundai coupe but RX needs mot and car tax plus new exhaust fitting before weekend :(
Pete try and post some pics and we will go from there. Should only take about an hour to fit. If you lived nearer i would of popped over and fitted it for you mate
Ash also wish lived nearer so could compare pipes etc.
as you can see from pics below the strut brace is not fastened at left side as when it is it is actualy pressing down quite hard on the IC pipe,IC itself appears to be at an angle but is sat flat on the cross beam.right side doug has used old coupling fitment to IC pipe from plenum as when used new one engine was racing more at start and when reached normal temperature was hunting for idle speed for a minute or two, with old one is back to normal start/idle speed revs.
baffled as hell doesnt look as nice an install as yours and another i have seen, any help much appreciated
Right start from scratch. Remove battery and all the induction pipework.
Place intercooler at about 15 degree angle facing over the main relay box. It should just sit nicely on the sub frame. The boost pipe from the turbo should then be able to fit onto the IC. It wont be dead straight and will appear to bend to the right if looking straight at the pipe. This is fine but will be sitting very very close to the air pump. Once the pipe is secured the s bend pipe should be able to fit in between the elbow and and the IC. It takes of bit of moving around to make it fit correctly. The length of the pipes and the angles that they are at holds the IC in place and at a slight angle towards the air duct. The strut brace should miss the pipe by about 1/2 inch.
It might be a simple case of something in the way blocking it from sitting correctly .....
Ash, a couple of pints and petrol money if you \'pop over\' to fit mine
Oddball done mate just let me know when

we are bound to be down south for some show or another (hope before rotorstock next year) maybe another drifting show at silverstone, one way or another will repay help.
sure is a long haul TOTB for you - 40 minutes for us looking forward to it be nice to see dragon :spank evos/scoobies/skylines ran well at rotorstock but even quicker now :)
Hi Peter,
Really sorry for not getting that photo posted for you. Will do tomorrow when at work with bluetooth.
Basically as the lads have said you have to angle the cooler so that the bottom rests on the sumframe adjacent the fans and the top lies under where the duct cover would sit. This is why most people dont re-fit the duct cover, but if you do (like me) you have to cut off the leading edge at the front.
It must be said that I used the LH pipe from my Amemiya kit and the RH pipe that came with the kit, as it was a better fit. The silicone supplied with the kit is also a tight fit and takes a bit of work to stretch over for a good fit.
Will post a pic to show this tom.
Chris

Great minds think alike ;)I also polished mine in place.
It aint as good, but its stacks less bother to do! If your like me you will find it hard to polish right to the bottom of the grooves. I\'ve just painted a black line around the bottom of the grooves to neaten it up.
I think I need to sort the alternator out too. I also have an ebay battery cover, however if I fit at the moment its going to bang off my battery terminals at present causing quite a few sparks!:Grrr
If you know of any other dress up bits out there please give me a shout as I\'m looking to get the engine bay really sorted for next year.:mmmm

Chris a good example of not replying to emails for you.
we live in Hull can only get kingston communications for phone line and consequently internet (total monopoly),last sunday got fed up seeing ads for net/phone offers better deals than we have so emailed OFCOM - no bloody reply - good for office for communications.wont give up now will ring next week ask OFCOM why kingston are allowed a monopoly in Hull
