Title: Knocklinks on a FD, worth doing?
Post by: scooby_si on October 07, 2003, 04:20:36 PM
I keep seeing comments like you can\'t afford any det on a rotary whereas u can get away with it from time to time on a boinger. How exact is this & while it is presumably better to have a set up where knocking/det isn\'t likely to happen, is it still worth/any point getting a decent knocklink & sensor set up on a RX7?
Cheers

The common argument is that yes, a better sensor may give better (no general noise) readings, but by the time the thing tells you it\'s detected knock - you will know about it anyway. Your engine will have likely thrown at least one tip away.

Piston engines can take quite a bit of abuse  (knock) before they go pop in comparison.

This is why all good rotary tuners keep the mixture fairly rich and don\'t go mad with timing advance either. Unless of course they are experimenting on their own workshop mule rather than tuning a customers car!

Regards

Funny, I have been thinking about moving my Link knock sensor from the scoob to the FD, just to see what it can detect. This uses a bosch sensor, which on the scoob has shown everything from lite noise to full on det.

Also trying to borrow a set of digital det cans from a friend.

Well if it\'s any use then i lurve the look of those new knocklink gauges & wood rather fancy getting one of those bad boys but i\'m not such a tart that i\'d get one if it was futile on a rotary
Si
i have got an image which shows how it changes colour from green to red as it detects det but too big to attach :(

Yeap, looked at those some time ago. I still use the old box style, which works fine on the scoob.

I will try and bodge it on for Sunday. And will let you know what I find on my way up to the pod.

Mine will be the pink (ok Red) FD, with the bonnet in primer and the silly wing on the back. ;)

Oh and should have the silly sized front brakes on as well. :D

Does any one know any one that uses a knock sensing system \'effectively\' (I mean more than "oh look, the gauge says we\'re detonating - hang on, is that front or rear rotor thats making a funny sound??" on a Rotor? Trying to think if I\'ve read any thing in any of the aussie mags but no bells are ringing...

Engine Dyno tuners use them to good effect. I know people that use them on boingers, but as we all know the rotary is a different beast.

We all know that the rear rotor on the 13B-REW engines suffer the main bulk of the problems, so I will be mounting on that.

The digital DET cans, are so sensitive that you can even hear the fuel running along the rails. I aim to try it before I start tuning so that I can get a base line of engine noise.

I think we need to invest on getting one of the better known aussie engine mappers to come over and map some cars for us.

well i suggest you get one over but not till January ;) lol
Seriously thou how can the apexi power FC be so well recommended with no great tips on who\'s the daddy in the UK for mapping it
