HI,

You live very close to one of the \'known\' Rotary specialists... WGT in Northwich!

http://www.wgtautodevelopments.co.uk

If you\'re not sure what you\'re doing why\'re you doing it?

Cause I will never see £2500 let alone save it up. I refuse to sell my RX-7 so I\'m left with one choice! Take it out myself and then give the lump to WGT then put it back in myself!

As you will find out, there is so much plumbing attached to the engines on these cars!

Get a large notebook, pen and a roll of masking tape.

Just disconnect everything methodically and tag and label as necessary as you go. Masking tape is good, because you can write on it then attach to most plugs and pipes. and even wrap nuts and bolts up close to their fixings

You must be mad ;)

Have fun!

Or you could buy a Bruce Turrentine rebuild DVD?

Regards

Max

Are you stuck at a specific point, or just over whelmed by the whole thing prior to picking up a spanner?

I have removed the bonnet (snapping 3 out of 4 bolts), I have removed the ecu loom and several other cables and wires, I can\'t get to the bolts on the engine that go through the oil cooler pies so am now trying to remove them at the oil cooler. I have just seen the enginemounts , how do I do these?

Engine mounts undo the two 14mm bolts sticking out the bottom of the subframe
Oil lines if you have twin coolers undo the banjo bolt at the bottom right on the front cover ( this will do the drivers side)
The other oil cooler has a line with a joint in it, take out circlip and twist the lines apart.
Take off water hose near spark plugs, disconnect two small connectors under oil filter, unplug connector to the ignition, oil metering and water thermosensor all near spark plugs, these will be obvious once you start lifting.
The starter motor has to be removed and disconnected, there is a wire above the gearbox with connectors on the side of the gearbox disconnect all these, there are tabs holding the wire in place.

part 1

part 2

Bellhousing there are 5 or 6 bolts, the top one is quite difficult to get to, I forgot one of the bolts for the starter motor has a nut on it.
The flywheel take off the inspection plate, the clutch is held on with six bolts you can undo these or try and release the clutch with a bar.
You can take the engine with downpipe(need two people) or take off downpipe separately. Small airpipe near downpipe needs to be disconnected aswell.
Disconnect wire to the sump.
All the water hoses to the thermostat, disconnect,
O2 sensor and earth at back of engine and earth on the block (fr right)
Take nut off power steering pulley undo 4 bolts move to side
aircon 4 bolts move to side.
Alternator and airpump just to give you more space,

There may be some parts I missed, but his is off the top of my head

good luck

Ps soak the downpipe bolts now
PPs I forgot the map sensor hose

is this the first time you have taken an engine out ???

if so - you have done bloody well

i have no mechanical experteese and i would probably never attempt it - but on the other hand - if its already a dead engine - you cant make it worse

so whats pip quoted you for a rebuild ???

Title: Help removing my 13B engine
Post by: grinder on February 06, 2004, 03:44:19 PM
ooohhhh i wouldnt mind seeing the thing go back in - that could be quite interesting !

so what did pip charge for just a rebuild then ???
Title: Help removing my 13B engine
Post by: Sean on February 06, 2004, 03:59:44 PM
It started off as £2,500........ I soon got bored of that idea!

So he suggested that I go through all of this agony for him by taking it out myself, which would bring the price down to under £1,000.

A little bit better! So I agreed and as you\'ve read ...... what fun it was!!!!:reallymad .

Anyway after it was all done the price has risen to £1,700! Which I cannot afford:( .

After negotiating we finally settled on £1,500. I\'ve been saving for bloody months!!!
Title: Help removing my 13B engine
Post by: grinder on February 06, 2004, 05:07:14 PM
1000 isnt a bad price at all - so how come it jumped to 1700 - or have you hard it ported and the such like ?
Title: Help removing my 13B engine
Post by: Wav on February 06, 2004, 06:25:53 PM
Well done m8 you\'ve done very well so far :bandit :D

A grand sounds a little optimistic seeing as Pip quoted me that just for all the seals needed for a rebuild, if i were to do the whole lot myself (i.e. rebuilt the engine myself) and just got the parts from them:eek:, this didn\'t include any rotor housings or anything else extra if required. But i guess 1500 quid is still pretty reasonable to be honest :) What exactly was done and replaced on the engine?

Anyway good luck with putting it all back in, Paul:)
Title: Help removing my 13B engine
Post by: Grizzly on February 06, 2004, 06:54:58 PM
Unfortunatly there is a lot of labor involved in rebuilding a rotary and at £30-£40 an hour soon add\'s up.

I would have thought 1k would not get you much, 1700 would have a set of Apex\'s etc and i would say thats about the going rate.

Chris
Title: Help removing my 13B engine
Post by: Sean on February 15, 2004, 11:00:50 AM
Final bill = £1500.

This included a secondhand housing

Re grinding both housings

replacing all tip seals

a new back plate seal

and something else was replaced!!

I don\'t know what half of these are, but he assured me that it was a good price.

Thanks again to the mighty Pip, I guess!

When I am ready to sink it back in, I\'ll let you know. That way you and the better half can come to mine!

You can assist me, and the girls can discuss their..... "why did you buy a stupid car that never bloody works" campaign.

You never know they may come up with something original instead of the same sentances over and over again!!!!!!

We may even get a couple of cups of tea, if we shut up and take it off them!!!!

ha ha ha ! - the better half is getting really sick now of rx7 !! - i think she hears about them too much  , and most of our conversations start off with "Today i was reading the mazda forum and ... "

and every time i mention them - it usually costs money :)

sounds good though  ! - let me know what happens - and i will try and bob up - at the end of the day i dont have a clue how an engine goes back in - but it would be fun trying !! ( thats said in a nice way and not the sledgehammer approach way :) )

That makes two of us (engine knowlege that is).

As you may have read, I had no idea how to get it out, but somehow I did it.

I would like to have gone to the warrington meet before it went pop, but by the time I got round to knowing roughly where it was held, it was too late!:reallymad
Title: Help removing my 13B engine
Post by: grinder on February 16, 2004, 01:14:30 PM
well i managed to change the oil on mine over the weekend so thats a start !

at the end of they day - if you got it out - it should go back in ! ( ha ha ha in theory )

but i suppose aslong as you take it one step at a time - then it should be ok !

one of the best/local people to speak to is GRIZZLY , he is a whizz with RX7 and his knowledge is superb ( well in my eyes ) - so maybe a chat with him to get the ball rolling is in order - and he may know to pitfalls to avoid
Title: Help removing my 13B engine

I see he is fairly local too then?

Does he go to Warrington? Have you met him before?

Title: Help removing my 13B engine

he is local yes ! ( always helps ! )

he does go to warrington - he was there when i last went

i have met him a few times - he helped the next door change his turbo over

but chris is a nice bloke - he is building a moster rx7 ( a tripple ! )

actually i have only ever seen 2 turbo II on the road ( ok 3 but one was the next door neighbours ! )

so what is yours ( colour , year ) ???

i have seen a few FD\'s on the road - but they are becoming too common now

Title: Help removing my 13B engine

have you realised this thread has turned into out own chat room ?

mine is totally standard apart from stainless exhaust ( just needs the front cat taking out )

and thats it really - the only thing i have done is put a sticker in the back window saying "ROTARY POWERED "

i have a few cosmetic mods to do now such as -

1 - interior neons ( green )
2 - exter neons ( green )
3 - go faster strips ( green )
4 - mesh the front grill ( green )
5 - paint the calipers ( errrr green )

so you can see the idea here - black car green stickers !!

GIT!!!!

I impulse bought green neons about six months ago and have been debating wether to put them in or not ever since!

Do they look good or tacky? I\'m too scared to fit them incase it looks too boy racerish!!!!

Do you have a pic taken at night with them on?

so we can have matching cars and matching colours - now im really gonna regret saying this as i will sound about 12 - but we only need a big truck with some tv\'s in it and we can launch Fast and the furious 3 ( stu runs off and hides for such a comment )

yeah sorry about the bad post - i have been back and changed it now !

im also bidding on some 2inch neons on fleabay - these im hoping will go under the passenger and drivers foot well - well thats the plan ! - also bidding on another set to stick in the boot ?? ( dont ask why cause i dont know ! )

and im after some 12v LED to put in the door handles to they show up green aswell ( although not 100% on how to do that ! )

i think you should stick your neons on - so that i can see what they look like ( as at 150 a go - they arent cheap ! )

do you drive a big truck then - blimey the rx7 must feel TINY compared to that

Title: Help removing my 13B engine

errr super chip - whats all this about then - i could be interested in one of them :)

and thats a fair power increase - i wonder if the injectors and fuel pump are up to the job ? ( see upgrade stages thread ! )
Title: Help removing my 13B engine
Post by: Sean on February 18, 2004, 09:41:17 AM
I asked Pip about upping the power a bit in a way thats safe for the engine, he said he has his own ECU upgrade in two stages....

Stage 1 = £150+VAT = approx 30bhp

Stage 2 = £170+VAT = approx 60bhp

I was thinking why bother with S1 when S2 is only £23 more! But he then went on to explain that you must first have the S1 installed, then S2 is added to that.

So for 260ish bhp your looking at £320+VAT:(  I can\'t afford that just yet
Title: Help removing my 13B engine
Post by: grinder on February 18, 2004, 09:43:13 AM
blimey thats not a bad price !

or so i assume that the stage one is a fuel cut defense and the stage two is a boost controller ??

or are these upgrades to the ECU ?

yeah ok - i just noticed that you said ECU !

so you got the engine back then ????

only how to get there from M6 junction 27, turn right, turn left at the T-junction, passed the Moat house hotel, round the bends, turn left at the staggered crossroads with lights, continue out of the town and through the next village, turn right at the 13\'9" bridge, under the low bridge, turn right at the 5th roundabout then left at the 2nd roundabout and the store is on the left.

But thats all!!!!!:rollin

i usually get there about 8:00 is and then come away at about 10:00 - it all depends on what time i have tea and how the night is going !

it may be worth you coming to the next meet - just to see what its like ???

i could meet you somewhere - but i have no idea where as i come down the m6 and straight to it !

Where do these bits go:eek
Title: Help removing my 13B engine
Post by: grinder on February 19, 2004, 01:28:48 PM
now thats funny !

well one looked like the turbo , one looked like you first cat ...

one is an alternator - the other looks like the water pump but not sure !

and the thigh buster goes between your thighs ( funnily enough ! )

when you get to rebuild time - if i can make it i , i will come in the FC so that we can look at mine and figure out where things go on yours ( and i assume that grizzly would do the same ! )

SO HAS IT ARRIVED ??????????
Title: Help removing my 13B engine
Post by: Sean on February 19, 2004, 04:54:14 PM
I did know what the bits were! I just need to know where the hell they are supposed to go!!!!!!

And yes the lump has arrived, I have proof.......
Title: Help removing my 13B engine
Post by: grinder on February 19, 2004, 04:56:33 PM
well the alternator goes RIGHT ON THE FRONT of the engine

the water pump - not sure on that one !

the first cat - just stick that on the exhaust and it should line up when the engine goes in

the turbo - im sure this sits quite low down in the engine - although not sure on this one !

so when you looking to start this small task ?

Title: Help removing my 13B engine
Post by: Sean on February 19, 2004, 06:41:58 PM
I was assembling in this order:

Exhaust manifold
Heatshield
Turbo
Heatshield

This made the most sense to me anyway

I offered the Manifold up to the studs (okay), I then went to put the nuts in place (ahh nuts! Where the f*** are they), after a while I found some that would do. Then time for the Heatshield, I offered it up, then ..... Ah! my first snapped stud! I drilled it out (after a fashion) next, tap the new hole. Ahh! I don\'t own any taps!!!! Okay then, onto the water pump. So I clean off the old gasket cement, oh! I don\'t have any of that stuff either HELP!

Got this lot together but I\'ll have to dissassemble it to mount it, D\'oh!
:(

I can\'t drop the engine in the car without these! I am missing to many to list, so if anyone has any odds and ends that they could donate, I would gladly cover any postage. And if you bring them yourselves and help me, I will get the kettle on!

4x Small bolts that hold on the water pump pulley

1x Longish bolt that goes straight through the water pump into the block

Thats all that I can remember off the top of my head (don\'t know what they were doing there).

I\'m going to try again now, is anyone near Northwich?

Okay.... latest update,

It\'s in, it fit\'s, and the damn thing is bolted to the bloody gearbox jobby!

All thats left now is to connect the multitude of pipes wires cables plugs tubes etc, etc!!!!!

I\'ve connected a few but as for the rest of them, I don\'t have a bloody clue!!!!

I did label them before I removed them, but that was over six months ago. If they havent worn off, I still can\'t make head nor tail of my own system!!!!

I think I need to see another Turbo II next to mine so I have a pattern.

Any offers?  I\'m in winsford, not far from Northwich, Middlewich and Warrington.

Well it fires, revs, smokes then dies after reaching about 2000rpm.

But I put that down to the exhaust not being bolted on properly and that funny back pressure pipe type thingy not being on. But it\'s dark and I can\'t see a thing anymore!

Oh! And does anyone have a socket that will fit the spark plugs, cause I don\'t?

if you start the car normally it revs to 3000K for about 15 seconds as a heat up facility

if you start it with the clutch in - then it doesnt ! :)

check that you havent got the throttle cable stuck in an open position - check for vacum leaks aswell

i have no idea what the above does - i read it on the yank forum !

GRIZZLY - whats up with your TII ???
Title: Help removing my 13B engine
Post by: sadgoth on March 03, 2004, 10:11:11 AM
I do have the full official workshop manual for the TII here, not a lot of help as I\'m abou 200 miles away I know, but it does have details on idle speed (setting of) adjustment of idle mixture etc.

says here: High Idles speed at normal temp:
things to check are:
a) check throttle valves open smoothly
b) inspect air system for leaks
c)check accelerator cable
d) check operation of BAC (bypass air control)
e) check operation of bypass air solenoid valve
f) check operation of air supply valve
g) check voltage of terminal 3B on Control unit (connect to starter switch)
h) check idle speed
i) check ignition timing
j) confirm fast idle cam releases from roller
k) check operation of dashpot
l) check air flow meter
m) check air bypass valve
n) check fuel pressure
o) check operation of control unit.

long list I know, I have instruction for each of the above if you need them. However if you need them all it may be a bit of time, I do have some work today too! :o

When the car is hot and you rev it to say 5-6k then let off quick (out of gear) does the revs drop to 250-300 or even stall?

If so I\'d be looking at setting the TPS up, if this is not the case then something more simple would be adjust the cold running plunger on the side of the Throttle. My car starts and revs to 1000-1100 then after 20 seconds 9somthing like that) drops to 850.

GRINDER! When I bought my Vert it had a blown water seal when I pulled it I found the water seal locating channel had collapsed, so I\'m rebuilding it.

Been working hard, things are getting nearer to normal, what\'s normal I ask myself.

Anyway, good to hear the local rotary gathering still remains. I am looking at putting together a rebuild package, tailored for the home enthusiast.

See how things develop over the next few weeks but wouldn\'t it be great to have a rebuild kit which comes with step by step guide, all included in the cost.

You\'ll still have to put in the hard hours, get really dirty and be prepared right off mistakes in order to gain experience (not saying that anyone will make mistakes).

I\'ll have some more information at the next meet, let me know if your interested.

Regards...

Jus

She still calls it a pile of junk (I\'ll convert her one day)

Only one snag though. I know it was a hot day today, but it idled a lot more lumpy today than it did yesterday. Should I be worried?

oh dear god - i wouldnt start thinking like that :eek

have you checked oil levels and water levels and the such like ???

is the oil cap on tight ( mine ran fine but wouldnt idea when i forgot to put it back on - i suppose it was loosing pressure ! )

just check , check and recheck all pipes and fitting - you never know something might have come loose ??

if you go on the 8th - are you going in any weather ??????

Really enjoyed the experience, lots of cleaning, (didn\'t do much my helper did that) messuring up the right bits (didn\'t do much of that either, my helper did that too) and finally the rebuild. Guess who the helper is :wave :wave

Oh YES! Nice big exhaust porting with really big seconday ports with a slight modification to the primarys, giving overlap and the Brap Brap Brap on idle.

It is like making a big cake, a nice base, then your sponge followed by your filling, then another sponge followed by another filling.

I can\'t wait to do the next, love it...

I think I should let Chris fill in the rest. Opps... I hope this engine wasn\'t top secret.

At least I haven\'t told them about the turbo your fitting after you\'ve ran her in, shhhh, lol.

Btw, the whole job was completed within one week, including porting.

WELL DONE Grizzly...

I can\'t take all the credit! Jus did souce the parts from his Contacts.

I have to say the Kits He\'s putting together are Top Draw, I\'ll have to run it in before i can give it some hammering but from what i\'ve seen they\'ve got all the best aftermarket seals etc.

I guess my engine is the Acid test, so far i\'m happy :)

We managed it so fast as the parts where on the shelf and we have quite alot of experiance in this sort of work.

It was a little unlucky that the timing of Jus\'s kits was\'nt a little sooner or we could have helped with yours.
