Post by: dubber91 on March 08, 2006, 10:44:43 PM
Has anyone got links to sites explaining the differences between the rex\'s? I understand the difference in shape, so 1st, 2nd, 3rd gen, but where do the FC, FC3s, FD3 etc etc come from? Basically im thinking of going turbo on my rotary beetle, and only want the simpler ECU systems to try and fathom..... Whats the difference in series? so s4-6 etc? which is the best to got for my application? not looking for mental power.....maybe 200????

Quote from: GmanFB3S - 1st Gen
FC3S - 2nd Gen
FD3S - 3rd Gen
FE3S? - RX8

just to put things right:

Japan:
SA22C = (1st. gen)
FC3S = (2nd. gen
FD3S = (3rd. gen)
HC3S = Luce Rotary
SE3P = (RX-8)

Europe:
SA = (1st. gen early version)
FB = (1st. gen later version)
FC = (2nd. gen)
FD = (3rd. gen)
SE = RX-8

The VIN for 2nd gen NA EUROPE VERSION ! looks line:
JMZFC1322000xxxx
The turbo VIN 2nd gen EUROPE VERSION!
JMZFC1332000xxxx

Hang on If I remember correctly the n/a 13b from a fc it is a 6 port. And the turbo version is a 4 port so different intake manifolds to start with. Dont know if a turbo exhaust manifold will bolt onto a 6 port. best ask Carl or the like.
 cheers, michael.

the series thing makes things more complex!

Gen1 (SA22C - series 1) to 1981 (I think)
12a engine
Gen 1 (FB3S - Series 2 & 3) S2 81-83, S3 84-early 86
12a engine (some late model S3s in the US used the 13b engine)

Gen 2 (FC3S - series 4 & 5) S4 86-88, S5 89-early 92
13b & 13bt engine
differenced between the S4 & S5 included things like lower compression rotors on the S4, lower power output on the S4

I don\'t think we had the S4 turbo officially in the UK so almost all 86-88 cars are EGIs

Gen 3 (FD3S - series 6,7 & 8) can\'t remember the dates on the FD except that the S8 was the 2000 onwards model
13bREW engine

hope that helps!
