Title: My First Posting. Soon to be an FD owner....
Post by: muckyman on March 07, 2006, 11:29:19 AM
Hi all,
I\'ve been lurking around for a while and thought I would pop in to say Hi and ask a few questions
I\'ve had a MX-5 (Eunos Roadster) for the past 2.5 years and spent a lot of time and money getting it up to 230bhp via turbo, engine management etc etc etc. Now I\'ve done just about all I can to it without going to a stroker kit, so the time is right to move on.
Initially I was torn between the options of a Supra and an RX-7.
I\'m now leaning towards a very nice Rex which will be available in about a month. Can\'t remember what the model is but I believe its got the Mazdaspeed body kit (the one with the clear perspex covered driving lamps built into the front bumper). Colour is black and it looks gorgeous. Mileage is 35k and i am lead to believe it has a single turbo.
Now, I\'ve read most of the FAQs on here but couldn\'t find anything on the following two subjects....
1. Its straight from Japan, will it run OK on UK fuels (ie Optimax or Tesco 99)
2. Apart from the normal things to watch out for, what do I need to consider when looking at a single turbo Rex?

cheers
Muckyman!

Welcome on board!

I had a Eunos for a while before the FC! As far as I know you shouldn\'t have any probs running the FD on Optimax or Tesco 99, what I\'d be more concerned about is what ECU it is running with the single turbo conversion? It would be abvisable to put an Apex\'i PFC in if it isn\'t running one already, many of the uprated Jap ECUs (Panspeed, RE-Amemiya, etc) can\'t be re-mapped here so would need to be replaced for mapping to UK fuel and conditions. Otherwise just the usual things, compression test, check fluid levels, check colour and condition of oil, etc

Make sure all the reliability mods are in place, uprated rad ect. Dont expect the tyres to be any good [a known fact - most accidents happen within 1 month of ownership :eek and it is mainly down to the rubber]
As stated above check out the type of ECU and for peace of mind take it to your prefurred tuner and have it re-mapped.

I would ensure the fuelling has been sorted out as I discovered on my single turbo FD when it came over from Japan it was running a stock fuel pump and stock injectors!! :eek

thanks for the words of wisdom.
Tyres have already been changed to UK rubber, so thats one thing less to worry about.
Any suggestions as to who my "preferred" specialist should be? Personal recommendations very welcome. I\'m in Maida Vale, London but work in Borehamwood, Herts - so either location is good for me. Obviously, I\'m prepared to travel a bit too

cheers guys!

Most local to you would be Rotecnics in Reading, not used them myself but have a good rep.
REworx in Portsmouth are my prefurred tuner give them a bell speak to Geff or Chris they are good guys and have thier own rolling road and tame tuner by the name of Max.

I use RX Motors in Dorset - speak to Tim, Matt or Ian 01725 516462 very good guys what Tim doesn\'t know about rotaries would probably fit in the top corner of a postage stamp!

RE: Worx in Portsmouth have a good rep

Rotechnics are good but pricey (not sure how keen they are on heavily modded cars)

Hayward Rotary are in Newbury - Carl is a great guy who knows his stuff
