Title: Quickly disabling the power steering pump - can it be done?
Post by: M@r]{ on March 06, 2006, 10:43:41 AM
Guys, is there a quick way of ‘disconnecting’ the power steering pump?

My pump give up spraying fluid everywhere â€" I need to get the car to WGT but I don’t want the pump to seize and leave me stranded on the motorway.

So is there a way of ‘bypassing’ it?  Could I just take of a belt?

It is driveable without power steering, very heavy though - you just have to drive accordingly.

Take the belt off :)

yeah, but can you just take the belt off?  I had a quick look and the pulleys all look linked

If you take the power steering belt off you\'ll only lose the air con pump in addition to the power steering pump. Shouldn\'t be a problem

I hope you are right, I can put up with no air con with one journey \'oop north\'

So how easy would it be then - just remove the belt?  And what else could I f**k by doing that   :2eek

It\'s easy enought to remove the belt - that\'s a doddle. Just undo the bolt on the belt tensioner, slacken it off, and remove belt - job done. Pretty much a five minute job.

Whether you\'re going to damage anything by running without it, i don\'t know. I\'m not an expert in that area (Actually, i\'m not an expert at all! :p). However, i don\'t believe it would damage anything - just you\'ll find the steering is very very heavy.

As above.

Just above the tensioner pulley is a small bolt, it\'ll be obvious when you look at it and the little pulley which one, unscrew that until the tensioner puller is loose which will slacken off the belt then remove the belt and retighten the bolt so it\'s not loose anymore

You\'ll be able to drive it, wouldn\'t try full lock, or parallel parking, and im sure you\'ll be fine.

Clean the other belts so there\'s no fluid on them or they may slip. You could run the engine for a bit around the block so it\'s hot, park up, switch off, and give it a gentle hosing in that area if youre concerned about the metal flakes, then leave it to steam off for a bit. Obviously dont drench the thing, especially electrics..

I\'ve done it pretty much the same and like i said, didn\'t really have a problem, except really tight roundabouts and parking :)

Is Pip not towing it now?

if you take the fluid out of the rack its not to bad to drive, its mainly the fluid in the rack that makes it hard to turn,as you have to force the fluid around ever time you turn the wheel,no fluid = easyer to turn
