Title: FD - Rear Pad change - Help please!
Post by: Initial-D on March 04, 2006, 07:49:43 PM
After a swap of my front pads today to some new Endless Carbon Ceramic jobbies I want to do the rears, but I understand you have to wind the pistons back, can anyone enlighten me as to what I need to do?

So starting with the rear wheel removed and the parking brake off whats next? :wave

dont you just get a G-Clamp - and push the pads out asfar as they will go . thus winding the pistons back in ??

to be honest - never done the pads - so i have no idea :(

The best to do it if you haven\'t got the tool is to put pressure on the piston (G-clamp)and wind it back(long nose pliers in the holes and turn).

Hope this helps.

Ben,

There is a special tool that fits into the 2 grooves in the piston that you can wind the piston back in with but you can do it with the right sized open ended spanner (put the 2 jaws of the spanner in the two groves and turn it),  just screw the piston all the way back into the caliper until you can get new pads in the with it over the disc.
Regards
Tony

I tried the pliers and it didnt work...

I bought the tool from Halfords, £20 the job is pi55 easy once you have the right tools, always best to invest in the things you need.

I agree with Dave, it is far too easy to slip with a pair of pliers and either put a hole in your hand on through the pistons dust cover :Nono! ;)

Its usually your other hand and trap the skin btween you thumb and finger in the plillars !

If your really struggling you can realise the bleed valve to reduce the pressure on the back of the piston and then re-bleed the back brakes once done. But remeber to re-bleed the system !!!!

Okay cheers guys I\'ll try the open ended spanner route... if this fails I\'ll go out and get the tool from halfrauds. I\'ve had too many near misses using pliers for the wrong job :eek!

Be prepared to walk to Halfords unless you have another car to get you there cause once youve got it all apart and the piston wont wind back in the car will have to be left jacked up etc... I had to do this and was uphappy about it as the car was ont he street, luckily I live in a quiet area though.

If your doing all the pads you may need a different tool for the fronts. I have the brake winder from machine mart for the front ones. Once you own the right tools your laughing !
