Title: Rebuild
Post by: dturpin on February 28, 2006, 06:13:08 PM
Hello everyone, I am seriously considering doing a rebuild on my 92 FD myself as it should turn out cheaper.  i am looking for some advise on how to go about it, like where can i get all the stuff i would need to do it with?  It would be me and my mate doing the work as he is a mechanic and im not to bad on the tools.  If anyone has done this themselves i wouldnt mind knowing how it went, how long it took etc, and just any other advise anyone can offer.

Check THIS (http://www.rotorsportsracing.com/performancetuning/engine_parts.htm#rebuildkits) out for rebuild kits, and also look HERE (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22350) as one member is currently undertaking this very project and i\'m sure he won\'t mind sharing some information...

Gary at Rotaryart sells a good DVD package that takes you through all the stages.

Only downside it that it is in a funny accent. ;)

I have literally just finished watching the rebuild DVD from Gary, I am now totally confident that I could have a good crack at an engine rebuild. Obviously I haven\'t used the dvd\'s in conjunction with actually building the engine yet, but I would give them top marks anyway!
I just got all the tools I didn\'t already have from Screwfix, very very cheap and good stuff too. I got: large torque wrench, small torque wrench, breaker bar, steel rulers, feeler gauges, dial indicator and stand, rubber mallet, plus a ball joint seperator (for something else) for under £120 delivered! i call that value!
Just need a 54mm socket, grinding stone, and some consumables (oil, hylomar, vaseline, cleaners etc) and I\'m all ready.

I\'ll be starting a thread once i have an engine to work on, so keep your eyes peeled.
I recieved very positive comments from a couple of pro engine builders too, who were more than happy to check out the parts for me before commencing the build, and would no doubt offer advice if I were to get stuck. Go for it I say. :)

If you don\'t want to use one of the video guides is there a decent set of documents available for download anywhere that will show you through the process?

Royal Purple make an oil for engine builders, instead of vaseline, good film strength to stop those metal on metal moments.

Max Tuff
A must for anyone assembling engines. Coat components prior to and during assembly process. Max Tuff\'s load bearing barrier film lowers friction prevents metal to metal contact, ferrous & non-ferrous. Displaces water from metal surfaces. Comes in 8oz bottle.

Thanks for all the advice so far its been very helpful. I have decided to deffinatly have a go at it after speaking to my mate last night.
Does anyone know if anyone in the UK can supply a rebuild kit, also where do get the rotor housings from if new ones are required, or is it best to replace them anyway?
I will keep the thread update when i start just got to get the cash sorted out now.
