:chat
just like to say cheers to Grinder for taking me out in his RX -- :Thumbs-up
what a car! even with a slipping clutch im very impressed at the speed!! I hope mine turns out as good.
I got the cab the 98 miles home safe and sound without any sketchy moments, going to go pick up the winch and tools / compressor tomorrow and get ready to start working on it!!
managed to bag a complete walk through for the conversion from auto to manual and engine / ecu removal. so i shouldnt have too much of a headache but i know where to come if i need advice :Thumbsup!
Nas
glad you enjoyed the ride buddy !!
must get the clutch done soon !
so where are the pics of work in progress ?? :D
Stu
well in order to do the job effectively i have had to clear a big space in the garage, which was a huge job in itself and im gonna count it as part of the conversion lol.
i still cant fit an RX in there but at least i can get the front end in! I have got all my tools together im ready to start, but i have been working all week and have so much other stuff to do this week, i havent had chance to start ripping it to bits.
I got a mate coming round this weekend to help me out tho, the bbc reckons that the weather is going to be ok too. so i will post some pics up on saturday night.
goodluck with the conversion nuttah!!! hope it goes ok dont forget to try to post sum pics so we can see how its going fella-good luck with it!!
slight thread hijack-stu wat new clutch u gonna get bud?
cheers colin
i have been offered a second hand clutch off pip and fitting
im just paranoid about a second hand clutch - but the price is right
gonna get the MOT done first - then sort that out - no point paying loads for a clutch if the MOT shows something major ( which it shouldnt as its only done 900 miles since it was last MOT\'d )
and long time no speak matey - you OK ?
a second hand clutch sounds good depends on the miles its dun i guess !! im cool tho matey feel free to give me a call any time for a chat u got my number!!!!
errrr probably not - im lethal for writing things on back of fag packets :D
Just get the clutch done already !!! :p
Shaun
:spank i dont wanna be a ****, please dont hijack my thread. i wouldnt do the same to anyone else.
i will be posting pics, soon - a few mates are coming round this saturday
Cool, lots of pictures.
Some extremely interesting threads going on at the min, plus sorry for the highjack !
Shaun
soz about the hijack dude!!
OK Nas , point taken
get some pics up :D :D
im all excited to see the project move forward :D :D
lol im about to hijack my own thread now :D lol its ok lads.
Yeah, everyone stop Hijacking this thread ;)
Whats your time schedule then Nas? :D
Im a Mod on another site so its kinda like a reflex!
i plan to get the engine swapped in before Tuesday, that leaves me until the following saturday to get the electrics sorted. I need to make a table so i know which wires to splice into which using the FSM\'s shouldnt be too much of a worry. just a bit of a long process, which is why i reckon i should* be done by the following week.
I have just changed jobs and managed to plan it so that i have the next two and a half weeks off! wahey! should be plenty of time to do this RX once and for all!
cant get the engine out, everything is disconnected, and the engine is rocking about as the passenger side engine mount is now free. but something is still holding the drivers side down, is there just one bolt holding the engine in on this side? please help!
What positions are you lifting it from? I presume you\'ve removed the rad etc?
IIRC you need to move it forwards then upwards. There should be one mount each side holding the engine down.
Have you removed the turbo or left it in situ?
dont worry engine is out now. bladdy ell tho what a mission this is! hopefully the coupe should come apart more easy now i have a better idea of what im doing!
edit cheers brett.- i wasnt specific lol, but what it was i didnt remove the three bolts holding the drivers side mount onto the oil pan, i did have it undone from the bottom tho so when i lifted the engine out the mount fell off?! i dont know why it didnt want to come out while still attached to the engine?!
anyway my house looks like the dingles have moved in, :D i gotta get this car done soon, shame its too cold to work on it at night, i hope the weather doesnt turn bad.
here are some pics, took a couple of days getting thus far, yet again rain has stopped play! and being out in the freezin weather has given me a cold as well. any way im pleased at the progress.
i have a few questions tho,.
s4 coils same as s5? they look very similar.
i have a variable resistor and a little black canistor next to the pressure sensor any idea what that does?
anyone want to buy a running (albeit poorly) engine? one of the seals is stuck on the rear rotor.
crickey !!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D
i think the thing you have in your hand is for the auto box .. not 100% sure - but there is a pic of it in the haynes manual !
and put the S5 coils on matey - you might aswell - and you know they both work !! - they are dead easy to swap over
How much for the motor then????
 Havent you got it finished and MOT\'d yet? :D
alban see my advert in the for sale section! although im pretty flexible on price although not much, i kinda posted what i would pay for stuff.
Brett its raining cats and dogs outside! anyway this project looks like its going to continue next week,
ok, heres a brief update.
engine has been removed frmo the coupe and is ready to fit tomorrow.
the cabriolet engine bay has had TWO cans of gunk sprayed and it hasnt really made much difference bah.
the auto to manual conversion -- it was a real pain as i had to kinda do it totally upside down and the coupe was near enough demolished to get the bracket which the clutch spring sits on -- off. anyway the conversion is now done, just a matter of hooking up the wire on the gearbox to the wire on the cab which puts the reverse lights on.
something is bothering me tho, there was a switch on the clutch pedal whats it do? i decided not to bother with it (it doesnt have anything to plug into!) am i to expect a problem?
i should have the S5 engine in the cab all connected by tomorrow evening and will have probably started on the electrics.
cheers
with aq bit of a struggle we finally got the engine in, made a custom bracket for the gearbox and mounted it.; i have started putting things back in such as the rad and the bits n bobs.
Im liking the way no plugs are the same lol, wirirng is going to be real fun! i will upload more pictures later.
great to here the progress is moving sooo fast matey :D :D
the wiring will be the fun bit - no doubt
can you not just transfer the WHOLE S5 loom into the S4 ??
i didnt think much to the s5 wiring tbh stu, its a bit skew whiff, i dont think it will be coming out in one bit. i would have to rip the two cars to pieces to remove and refit, if there is a break in the loom while im doing it (which i reckon there already is on the s5), i will need devine intervention to get the bloody thing going again! :god :rollin
was going to ask whats the canistor below the fuses in the S5 do?
here are some pics. a couple of lads who i used to work with came up from sheff to help me refit the engine in the rain! a couple of legends! good job the did as i dont think i would have been able to do it on my own.
looking good matey :D
and i have no idea what you mean about the canister - a pic would help :D
Stu
top right picture under the egi fuses! its a wierd shape which follows the contour of the suspension turret, it has a single hose going into the top of it. im trying to slim down the Rx -
footnote -- i put the all the aircon bits i took off into a box and tried lifting it i recon its about 20kg wieght i am saving. with a few other bits n bobs done i should be able to compete in the 100mph challenge @ rotorstock!
In that case (loom issue) you are crying out for an aftermarket ECU and a DIY loom :)
errr i have NO idea - im sure i dont have one :D
*** edit ***
im lying - yeah i do have one - no idea what it actaully does though !! it looks plastic and light - if thats the case - just leave it on :D
i think i may as well keep it lol unless someone tells me its a load of useless stuff. i didnt work on the car today, im having a week off from it i think. today i washed it and the paint work came up pretty well.
after tracing the pipe - it runs to the engine via some white bulb things - no idea - but odds are you prob need it :D
everything is now back on the engine including propshaft and new lubes / coolant / belts / filter / plugs. :) now all is left is to hook up the gearbox wiring (thats not too difficult) and the wiring of the last plug which doesnt fit into my ecu.
I have been researching the swap and everyone seems to have a different number on thier ecu\'s on mine it says N380 but on the pics i see for the s5 T2 ecu its a N374? whats the difference here then?? is my ecu going to be totally different?
you need the S5 ECU to run the car properly - the N374 - the ECU you have will be set for the S4 and auto box
unless you mean that the ECU in the S5 is a 380??
Started my new job today - so didnt have much time to do the RX7 lol
The ecu i have taken from my coupe is a N380, all the pics i keep seeing of S5 ECU\'s have N374 on them?? anyway im going to soldier on with this conversion, i need to get hold of a soldering iron and some spade terminals. im off to me local B&Q
found this good for anyone doing the same swap as me.

FEM01: its color in front and color in emission (the color you look for) and the meaning, I didint bother with cruise control, so if you want one, you need to look it up yourself. S5 ecu also checks for electric load(like defroster, lights etc) to adjust idle, I didnt connect this either because you would need to run these wires ( they are not in S4)
I also didnt correctly connect grounding circuits, I just grounded all grounds to body.

ok finished wiring up!!!!!!
i soldered and used some good thick insulation tape, checked it against the diagrams, i think i have done it right, tomorrow i finish work early so im hoping to double check it in daylight.
I havent hooked up the emissions part of the engine harness. - opinions please, wont need it if i plan on removing that airpump? is the emmisions essential to running of my engine?
here are some jobs left...
fit exhaust
check wiring and then check it again.
stick a bit more oil in the gearbox.
check water levels and give the engine bay final checks.
hook up the 5th switch and neutral switch wires from gearbox. (easy)
remove carpets and replace.
fit seats.
fit battery tray and battery
start up the bad boy!!! :evillaugh :Giggle
take rims to a refurb place and get some tyres fitted.
Book the MOT!!!
probably a couple of days work there maximum, im hoping to make a huge effort and at least have it running by tomorrow night!!!
for future reference. heres a simplified diagram i was using to wire it up. (thanks to someone on rx7club.com)
:god you the man.
There is no way I would ever be brave enough to take on someting as complex as this myself - and you seem to be getting through it at one hell of a rate.
Good job - keep it up, you are inspiration to us all!!
Thud thanks for the kind words mate. this was a bit of a "ghetto engine swap" i didnt change the mounts or change the clutch or any of that. just gave it a new belts and a good service.
taking an FC to bits isnt that difficult actually, seems to be very simple in how its put together, before i started i thought it would be much harder . Its just the rusty bolts that are the main ball aches.. you dont really need many tools either, just a comprehensive range socket set. I think im lucky i have some good mates who let me borrow an engine crane and gave me a hand. i was under pressure to have this car finished by the end of this week and gotta be ready for rotorstock which isnt too far away now.
so you reckon by the end of this week - now that is VERY impressed matey
and rotorstock - ekkk your not kidding - got my FC booked in for the MOT on tues - do i start to panic now ????? LOL
keep us upto date matey - certainly makes a good thread - i might even make it a sticky for all to see :D :D
dreaded MOT eh!!! I dont know if im going to have a problem with that myself i hope not! reminds me that theres some other stuff i have to do like change the rear lights, the loom for the lights is a bit messed up tho. I still havnt got round to ordering the block off plates and dual alt pully. might hold off and see what the MOT dude thinks about the level of emissions its kicking out, Being a JDM import tho, i might be able to get away with it.
I had to keep the S4 alt, as the s5 wont fit due to a different plugs on the harness. think its a better idea as its from an auto it should kick out a little bit more juice (according to FSM). maybe a worthwhile mod along with a ignition booster????
cheers stu, dont know if the thread is worthy of being a sticky. i was planning on making a full writeup with pics for the MRC knowledge base anyhow. There is another way of doing the conversion, but that involves stripping the s5 and s4 engine to a bare block and attaching the anciliries(sp) the old loom (which will probably snap!) to the s5 engine essentially using the s4 ecu / anciliraries on the s5 block..
I chose to keep the s5 engine together and wire in the s5 ecu into the s4 body harness as i think it takes less time.
i dont understand this.
i tried to fire it up and all the warning lights shine up and everything electrical seems to work, but there is absolutly nothing when i turn the key!? the starter doesnt turn.
i have checked the wiring and i have everything connected properly. im starting to wonder why i even bothered with this project!!
Nas,, have you got the small wire (spade terminal,, thin wire) connected to the starter motor, If so is it the correct one, test it with a test light, it should have power when the key is turned in the cranking position only, Make sure you have an earth conection onto the starter for the best power. You can alway test it by putting a wire on the starter solenoid (spade terminal)to the battery to see if the starter engages... dont give up, you are so close...
thanks for the response!!!!
had the multimeter out and im getting good voltage from the ignotion switch to ecu,. all the wires are in the right place, i havent hooked up the emissions, but doubt that is why im getting a problem.
Im with you on this alan, im thinking starter motor, im pretty sure i hooked everything up but im going to check that again, its dark now and its raining, so i will wait till the morning,.
cheers
Nas,
N374 = JDM TII ECU
N380 = UK TII ECU
Hope that sheds some light for you :)
Oh BTW, if you hook up 1E via a low voltage/wattage ignition switched LED (the ECU pin 1E is the switched ground) you will have yourself a functioning MIL (Malfunction indicator Lamp) :D
this is doing my head in now.
i CANT get it working, damn it, i have probably blown something by now, i ****ing hate this car.
Are you still having problems??? Have you got it to turn over yet???
frustrated earlier sorry!
sometimes when things dont go how i expect them to and i have absolutley no clue how to resolve it when it doesnt work and no one to help me out i get ****ed off!
I did get it to turn over (in a fashion) i crossed the starter and it was turning the engine just fine,. however it wont kick the starter when i turn the key to the cranking position.
i *think* that the problem may lie with a couple of the connections may be wrong and the fact that an auto inherently cant be started unless in park / neutral. this means that i have to figure out which pin it is and cross/ jump it so that this "feature" is removed. but i cant even find the right plug / wires off the tranny / body harness. the two are different as well the single pin connection on the starter motor on the S4 comes off the wiring loom from the gearbox, where as on the S5 its in the body harness. so i cut the plug off the auto box and then plugged it into the body harness and then to the starter and still no joy. :2Mad
im looking at the FSM and its all going blurry.
ok i been studying pretty hard, and it must be the inhibitor switch! im going to by pass it and run a new cable from the starter relay, problem is i dont know where that would be anyone got an idea where it is located? the FSM isnt very clear on this.
did the starter kick over before you did the engine swap, ive got 2 fc starters here if you wanna try another one, if it turns out to be the switch over device on the starter.
are you getting voltage to small wire on starter when key is turned to cranking pos?
sorry im not reading all of your posts, just read the difference between s4 and s5 wiring and for an auto, sounds like a real head scratcher this one.
like you say, take a feed of the ignition barrel for cranking, straight to starter small wire to engage starter.
ta for the response any help i can get is appreciated. i will have another go at it tomorrow.
well i have got it cranking off the key now! waheyyyyy! :cool
however its not going to fire just yet until i rewire my fuel pump relay. thats the next task. :Yawn this car is taking AGES to sort out, but i can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
so heres the task list left
rewire fuel pump / and relay.
wire up reverse switch
fit heat shielding under g/b
fit exhaust this might be a pain as i have to drill out some rusty bolts and weld new ones on.
remove rear spoiler.
replace rear lights for s5 ones
final checks (fluids)
and then hopefully waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa tsh. :WaveBye to the MOT station!
respray front s5 bumper and T2 skirts then fit them
refurb those rims and fit tyres.
get to rotorstock without breaking down!
;)
good work mate, the beauty is when you do a project like youve done, you get to know the car like the back of your hand, fault finding becomes easy because you can relate most faults to things youve done and changed.
it will all be worth it in the end mate, theres no better feeling than driving the car knowing you did all the work yourself :WaveBye
hell yeh!! im getting to know this car rather too intimatly (might start having to call it me missus!) i have never driven an Rx7 before (well up and down my road doesnt really count) so im looking forward to hitting the cruise when its all up and running,
i still havent found the relay!! :) haha. instead i have decided to take a feed from the off the pin on the ECU. which isnt a good thing but at least i know i have got the iggy wires in the right place!
im hopefully waiting for someone to tell me where this damn relay is cos in the fsm diagram im not sure if its inside the cabin or in the engine bay!!
i think its in the nose cone at the front
Is the S5 engine from a manual car?, Reason i ask is that if its auto it wont have a pilot bearing in the end of the eccentric shaft.
The wire on the clutch pedal may be for cruise copntrol as when you dip the clutch the cruise switches off.
Stick with it, it sounds like a good project
yeh the s5 engine and box are out of a manual coupe. the cab used to be an auto but i have added an extra pedal now lol.
there are a few relays there! but im sure they arnt the right ones because the FSM points to something near the firewall area. there is a little metal box behind the coil nearest to the firewall, but the wires dont correspond so im stumped. i cant see anything behind the dash area.
Ah, i was thinking of my FD, the fuel pump relay is under the dash by the steering column. sorry about that.
quick update got all the bits needed for the fuel pump rewire. 40 amp 12 v automotive relay and some fuse holders. i need to go and buy some wire now.
well i rewired my fuel pump it was a pretty simple affair.
its just the car wont start in the usually way, i have to bleeding hotwire the thing as i cant get past this inhibitor switch. its really doin my head in!
i havent had the courage to ring an auto electrician as they might be reluctant to help me because i have done all the splicing and dicing myself and might charge me more than usual.
im going to make a post in the tech section hopefully someone might have an idea.
Cant you rewire the system so that the inhibitor is left out for the time being?
i should explain where i am....
there is a wire in the footwell that goes +12 when you try and switch ignition to crank.
i took a wire straight from that and hooked it up to the alternator. this allowed me to crank the engine. Im no auto sparky!l but i dont think its such a good idea as getting it to crank over by having it right off the wire no relays and such like.
i could rewire the whole ignition system but i really dont want to! if there is a wire or a couple of pins that i can jump saving me time and effort....
Have you found the original plug that went to the inhibitor switch, or to the auto lever park and neutral switch??? if you have found these it should be fairly straight forward. Do you have a wireing diagram, for the auto and manual.. If you explain again exactly what you have found, and where you are with the wiring I will see if I can help..........
:Grrr bollocks to this car!!! i bet that even if i overcome this problem there are bound to be at least ten more! it probably wont even start, if it does it wont drive very well and it will probably catch fire or something, and fail the MOT on something stupid a few times.
anyway i have decided that im going to make my own ignition system, i shouldnt have persevered with trying to utilise the stocko wiring, all i can say is **** you mazda!! lol
i going to order another relay, more wire. its a shame as i wanted the car to appear as stock in its operation but screw that now! im going to have a nice push button that lights up and then have a cock pit style switch for the pump. i got so much stuff to do.
i still havent wired that gearbox switch up as the wires are at the top of the GB so i have to drop the gear box again to get at them... :reallymad
i have to change the rear lights and wire up a fog light switch, then i have to give the interior a bloody good clean as its nothin but filth inside,
fit me seats and then get that ghey rear spoiler off, plastic weld the front bumper and get the hood fixed. wheels and tyres - MOT insurance tax etc
im never going to get it done in time!!!
im proper disheartend at the minute and i still have to strip the donor car down and get rid of bits. life is so cruel
HAHAHAHAHHA YEHHHHHHH
it fired up albeit briefly but damn dont i feel good right now. it wouldnt start again after i gave the battery a quick charge up. doesnt matter i HEARD IT RUN!! and it will do so soon enough
all that work that i have done, persevered in the ****in rain and had no clue and took time to learn and when you hear it run, its as good a feeling as buying an FD!!
is this what having a kid feels like!?
cheers for the help everyone, in case you wondering how i did it. i made a new ignition circuit and a new fuel pump circuit. jobs nearly a good un!
im off out to celebrate!
i think its flooded as the throttle cable is open as its a bit shorter on the S4 and i can smell raw fuel ****ing out. i will wait till tomorrow and then see what happens!
