Right guys, I think i might have a clearance problem with the 12a in my moggy. As in the sump is too close to the ground. I was thinking of ways around this and obviously one way is to dry sump. So I have made a whole stack of enquiries and am just waiting to hear back.
The other mad idea I had was to modify the oil pick up , as inshorten it by a few inches and cut some depth out of the sump. Then possibly installing a resovior of sorts in the engine bay that the return line from the oil cooler wold feed into the top of. There would be a hose on the bottom of said tank feeding back into the engine. Anyone reckon this might be ok??? :3Confused
Just throwing up some ideas.
any opinions would be great guys.
cheers, michael.
This sounds like a similar idea to an oil catch tank - except instead of storing blown by oil, you\'re storing returning cooler oil. Sounds reasionable to me
catch tank idea sounds about the best michael dry sump your looking at lots of dosh
If you need a clutch res i\'ve located one
Kevin
Hey Kev, a clutch res would be fantastic. PM me the details and I will send off money or whatever i owe you for the favour. REALLY appreciate it, thanks very much.
Back to the oil thing. I was thinking of a container that is capable of storing about 2 pints of oil. The inlet for the \'catch tank\' would be lower than the outlet on the oilcooler and then the outlet on the \'catch tank\' would be lower than the inlet, but higher than the point at which oil returns to the engine. So gravity would be my friend and not the usual bugger.
any more opinions????
I\'ll fetch it from work tommorow and package it up if you\'ll cover the postage that\'ll do me.
Kevin
The sump can be manufactured in all ways.......lessen the depth but add on side tanks on the sump...ala racing sumps of years gone by....the pickup may be shortened no worries,if you turn it around you will have to manufacture a baffle inside the side and a splash pan.........anything is possible bud... :Talking1
I figure that the reason people have to use decent oil pumps for the dry sump set up is because the oil has to travel along way, and back. If I use gravity and keep everything in tyhe engine bay I reckon that it should be ok.? I hope so anyway. It is either this or move the steering rack someplace else which sound like a bugger to do.
cheers, all feedback on my wack ideas is more than welcome.
thanks kev,and all others cheers, michael.
Random idea part two. Hows about using a power steering pump to help circulate the oil. Or maybe even not use the stock oil pump just the external pas pump??? With a dry sump set up do people still use the engines original oil pump??
cheers, michael.
I know of a semi spaceframe that used a washing machine pump for its dry sump set up
Cool, as I go down stairs with my toolkit! :)
I\'d go for an Era style shallow sump ... simpler and less to go wrong. you can MIG weld the new sump but as its porous you need to braze the joints as well (so I have been told ... not done one yet)
The trouble with using a dry sump is you need another pump or at least another couple of circuits in the oil pump to pull oil from where it drains at the bearings and replenish the external sump. (think of it like a fuel injection system, Low pressure pump, swirl pot/surge tank and HP pump) The return side of the standard system just relies on gravity as standard
OK I cant widebthe sump after shallowing of it. As the chassis rails kind of hug the sumps sides quite well. So somehow I have to lessen the size but still keep the original capacity. hmmm, any ideas guys?
cheers, michael.
can you make it shallower in some areas but deeper in others ? so its all the same depth ? then add some baffles and stuff ?
Is there any scope for lifting the engine a little ?
Nope, cant lift the engine as the box is already about an inch away from the steering rack. And it sitting so very nicely at the minute being so low. Got to be doing good things for the centre of gravity sceario.
aaaaaaargh, michael.
can you extend out the front ? I know its not going to be great for oil surge but it will get you some volume back again ?
How about just raiseing the engine a couple of inches, should be a lot less trouble ?
Not a bad idea Mike. Clive I cant lift the engine as there is a huge clearance problem with the gearbox hitting the steering rack if it goes any higher.
Cheers, will def get photos today.
michael.
I know that problem well. We aren\'t running much clearance (<5mm) in a similar situation on a car with near identical suspension and we\'ve taken a good chunk out the bell housing with a grinder to help things. The engine + box shouldn\'t move much that way anyway.
