Title: V-mount intercooler project complete!
Post by: nikp on February 22, 2006, 02:37:12 PM
My v-mount intercooler project is finally complete. What should have been a simple, routine and quick installation (I reckoned on 2 hours) took me a grand total of 4 days to complete! In the end the small nice compact battery had to go in the boot after all. That was an unexpected hastle - amongst many other things! Anyway, here are some pictures:

Not sure yet! :p It\'s only just complete - but i think i need to get it mapped: I got a knock reading of 111 last night!!!!!!! :o Just about to phone WGT to sort that out!

Quotewhere did you get it and how much for

The place where i got it don\'t sell it independently anymore, but it\'s now being sold through Dragon for £950 i believe - good value for money considering!

You\'ll need to fork out for a nice vented bonnet now  :D
Nice work  :Thumbs-up
Dont think I\'d be able to install those myself in a millennium years

It looks like it gives the filters a nice bit of cold air aswell!

Let us know the results.

Just noticed, wheres the AST gone?

I\'ve hidden the AST next to the coolant filler, just below the secondary intake. I am thinking about removing it altogether, but am keeping it while i keep an eye on temps, etc.

It was a kit: came with with radiator, intercooler, cross bar and silicone hoses and ally pipe (x3) for coolant. The kit is sold by Ross at Dragon for £950+Vat.

Antnicuk, what do you mean?

Yeah, considering almost all the front mount kits i\'ve seen go for well over £1k! I think it\'s good value for money anyhow!

i didnt realise how much these things cost...... i paid 150 quid brand new for my intercooler and its huge,  4 inches thick, and the core is 2ft by 14inches.  I fitted it in a reverse v mount as i dont have a vented bonnet (flat in the bottom of the engine bay).  I had air temps or 23 degrees on the rollers last august so its working.

Now thats value for money!

its an FC but will work on an FD,  i had a front mount on my FD but didnt like blocking the rad.

The top view has the cover removed for the photo,  the cover ensures that the air that goes in the mouth either has to go through the rad or the intercooler,  the lower pressure underneath the car means high pressure air in the front nose of the car wants to go through the intercooler.

Add some fuel with the pim volt and or rev range on the pfc to be safe mate. You will of leaned out and be boosting a little higher at your current settings. :Thumbs-up  I can do it for you if you are not sure what to do.

Dragon, What do you get in the kit? Is it just the IC and Pipe work or do you get the Rad and the Mountings etc as well? is the price £950 + vat Correct?

What would you say was the hardest thing to sort out fitting the kit? If I attempt such I job I\'d like to know what I\'m getting in to.

Cheers for the pointer - will do. However, i have her booked in for a mapping session on the 7th March, so should be ok.

Grizzly - you get an intercooler, radiator, cross beam for bolting the rad and intercooler to (You can see that in the pic where i have removed everything), silicone hoses (for intercooler and the coolant) and ally pipes for the coolant too.

Quote from: cannibalWhat would you say was the hardest thing to sort out fitting the kit? If I attempt such I job I\'d like to know what I\'m getting in to.

Cannibal - you\'d have to get the air con de-gassed (it\'s illegal to do it yourself - but doesn\'t cost much - cost me £30 i think). As the air con condensor needs to be removed as it\'s in the way. You can always get something re-installed at a later date.

Once the air con is done, you need to remove your intake piping, stock intercooler, old radiator and air con condensor - these are all pretty easy to do. Then it\'s just a case of fitting the new cross beam, installing the fans onto the new radiator, installing that in the car, then the inter cooler, and bolting it all to the cross beam. One hard thing to do is what to do with the relay box. That\'s a bit of a bugger - I have mounted mine vertically downward next to the intercooler, as you can see from the pictures. It\'s not perfect, but it works!

It\'s pretty much a straightforward job, but there was a bit of faffing about on my part due to small little niggles (Like, for example, installing the intercooler and rad, then realising that i forgot to install the fans whihc can\'t be done afterwards! - doh!)

Oh, i had to put the battery in the boot too, which a bit of a pain!

Thanks for the pointers. What are you going to do about your air con?
Title: V-mount intercooler project complete!
Post by: nikp on February 23, 2006, 12:13:38 PM
I\'m going to leave it for now. Later on i will decide whether to re-instate it - will require a new air-con condensor, and mounting points, new lines made up - bit of a pain, so i will probably remove the lot (save some weight by doing so too!). I got the quote for re-instating it, and it was gonna cost about £300 for the lot. Quite a bit. And i like the simplicity of it anyway.

Nikp, Do you know if there is a kit that i can use a Greddy Elbow with? Or is this just for the Stocker?
Title: V-mount intercooler project complete!
Post by: nikp on February 24, 2006, 09:14:37 AM
Yo, grizzly - i\'m sure it should be easy enough to use the same kit with the greddy elbow. As far as i\'m aware, the greddy elbow is shorter than the stock one: therefore all you\'d need would be another bit of silicone hose to connect to the elbow, and then some ally tubing of the same diameter as the elbow to connect them together.

Alternatively, give DRAGON a ring to see whether they can cater for that - it\'s a common addition to the FD - so there may be something available.

with the v-mount do you lose the ast????
Title: V-mount intercooler project complete!
Post by: nikp on July 03, 2006, 11:00:00 AM
No, i relocated it next to the filler cap. It wasn\'t pretty, but it worked. You can do away with the AST completely, especially if you have a decent rad that keeps temps down.

Looks good :) I\'m determined to see if I can get a friend to do an elbow without the silly curve in it so no need for unnecessary curves going to the intercooler.

Will try and relocate the fuel filter as well.
