Title: fuel smells
Post by: brian snapes on February 16, 2006, 11:08:05 AM
Had my car over a year now 93 auto FD really like the car, but hate the fuel fumes . and want to get to solve it. I bought the car with a blown engine and had it rebuilt by RX motors, engine has been fine . Just this powerful smell which is intensified when the heater is switched on. The tickover is steady no hunting. Before I take the inlet manifold off to check for leaks {a major job I believe} are there any ways I can check for leaks. The car has no modifications and only covered 3000 miles since rebuild.

Charcol filters all piped up Brian isn\'t it? I wouldn\'t think you had a vac leak if you\'ve a good tickover. One dodge for finding vac leaks is get a tin of easy start and spray the joints while the engine ticking over any vac leaks will show up as the tickover increases with the extra fuel pulled into the manifold. its a bit crude but does work.

If it smells that strong then it should be easy to find. If it\'s not the pipe from the purge control valve, that\'s come off the remove the manifol it\'s not pig to do. Also before removing the manifold check the fuel lines just above the  where the spark plugs are.

I have the same fuel smell in mine. I\'ve been told it\'s the gaskets. Supposedly up until 1996 they were made of paper and after that made of metal. which gets rid of the smell.

Of course, I haven\'t fixed mine by changing the gaskets so it could be bullpoop  :Viking

I had a fuel smell in my FD and it turned out to be the hose that goes from the brake servo to the inlet manifold.  There is a valve in it and if it is removed for any reason you get the smell of fuel come through into the car.  Took me ages to find as i didnt know there was a one way valve in the pipe.
