Title: Engine squeak on cold starting
Post by: robedwards99 on February 16, 2006, 09:34:38 AM
If my FD has been sat for a couple of days, there is a pretty loud squeak that comes from the engine just as it first fires after turning over.

The engine has done less than 3000 on a rebuild so it should be in tip-top condition.

Does anyone else experience this?? Is this normal??

fan/ drive belts maybe? they get damp or they could be \'old\' and \'In the grove\' like me!

Possible I guess, it\'s not like the typical squeaky fan belt noise though.

This is a short sharp noise, quite painful sounding!, less than a second long.

Check the tension on the belts, back the alternator one off first and then try starting it. It will only take you about 2 mins with a  10mm spanner iirc.

It\'s gonna be difficult to tell if that is the problem or not as I only ever hear the noise for half a second when I start it up after it\'s been stood for a couple of days.

If people are sure it\'s a belt problem I won\'t worry too much. I was just concerned that it might of been something inside the engine making a nasty screech.

If anyone else can elaborate on possibilities I would be grateful :)

Rob.

Hi Rob, sounds like belts, i am just about to fit a new set on mine, but they are not that worn if you get stuck,
