Title: Moving position of power steering lines?
Post by: nikp on February 15, 2006, 10:29:43 AM
Can anyone advise on this? I want to slightly move the postion of the S-bend power steering lines, as i will be installing a new radiator for a V-mounted intercooler setup. Can i just gently bend them into a slightly different position? Or what? Can anyone suggest anything else?

You could bend them.. or you could do away with them altogether and run a rubber hose in their place. Many people have done this (including me) with no ill effects whatsoever

Excellent! So i can ditch them altogether - that\'s excellent news! Do i need any special specific rubber hose?

Can\'t remember the hose inside diameter but any rubber hose suitable for carrying oil will do (it\'s the low pressure side of the system)

dont they use the s figure as a way of cooling. Why do they not just go point to point?

yeah but the cooling effect is negligible to the point where you can do away with it altogether.

Cool
no pun intended :-0

Yeah, i would have thought if they wanted to do any substantial cooling, they\'d have fitted a radiator.

I wouldn\'t get rid of it all together, If you sit in traffic for prolonged periods of time the fluid can actually boil and damage the pump. Just feel how hot the pipe is after a run !!!

I got a mini rad off ebay for an mini oil cooler for austrialia, works brilliant, keeps the line from over heating. Didn\'t cost much with postage either.

I think its about 11mm pipe on the cooling line. I\'ve used rubber fuel line and its worked fine. But you need to replace it.

But surely if you\'re sat in traffic then there\'s no cooling for it anyway? Only once moving will it get cooled, and probably not that substantially seeing as though it\'s just pipework, and no radiator.

a mini rad would definitely be better than the original pipes because the original pipes do bugger all in the way of cooling. Do you know of any cases where the power steering fluid has boiled damaging the pump? (bearing in mind, when sitting in traffic the original pipes do not cool the fluid at all)

Its more the case that the pump is working hardest in traffic when the wheels aren\'t turning very quick. If you then get into a clear run and there isn\'t any cooling available all it will do is build up heat an boil the fluid

I only investigated it when i was installing my intercooler. I was told by pip not to hide the pipe under the intercooler because i ran the risk of over heating the fluid and killing the pump.

The main reason why i went to the rad was that the main line was heating the air up infornt of the intake upping my intake temps. I have one of the filters sat behind my intercooler (and other down the side). The rad makes alot of difference and the feel from the steering is more crisp.

The biggest question is how much would it cost to change a powersteering pump ? Or even worse what happens if you boil the powersteering fluid.

I can dig out the company that sells the rad, it isn\'t expensive !

Do you know where i might be able to get a part like this in this country?

sounds fair enough. I know I\'m not the only one with the loop removed with no rad though.. it\'s been that way for nearly a year with no ill effects even sitting for hours in the summer. I\'ve a feeling the fluid reservoir would melt before the oil boiled!
Since I have room for a power steering cooler now I\'m using a PWR CC I may well consider a small rad.. just need to find one that\'s compact enough and cheap :(

Sorry, Its a case of pip says don\'t hide it who am i to argue ! It was more about wrecking the pump that worried me.

I got mine from aus, didn\'t take long either. I can\'t find the receipt or buisness card i got with it ! They advertised on usa ebay.

Exactly, mine was something like 20 quid with postage from Austrilia. It doesn\'t have to be massive. Its as much a precaution as anything. Would mazda make a pipe as complecated as that if they could get away without it ??? Wouldn\'t like to buy a new replacement pipe !

I think i might get something cheap like that myself, but for now i\'ll either remove it and bypass with a rubber hose, or preferably, if i can bend the pipes and move them so i can fit the rad - i\'ll do that

The pipes are quite thick steel. I couldn\'t bend them, but i only had the brakeline bender to hand.

Funny how this has cropped up, I\'m slicing and dicing my PS line at some point potentially this weekend to remove exactly what you\'ve pointed out, I\'m using a pump from a saxo vtr though so overheating won\'t be a problem, you can just turn it off in traffic. I would say it\'s worth splashing out for some proper piping though. Can always PM me if you want the details of the hosing im using and where from, id tell you now but it\'d mean moving from this seat..
Title: rad dimensions
Post by: Eddie on February 20, 2006, 04:23:05 PM
Hi

I popped into a radiator company today called Oldham radiator to have a alloy radiator tested I bought for my FD for 70 quid (bargin), and I asked about these small power steering rads, they had loads on the shelf but needed to know dimension for costings
If someone can advise of the size of the power steering rad  and inlet and out let ID\'s then I can go and get one and post the price up here, we may even get a good discount for a group buy.
ANd what hose would be required and any idea\'s of length? I know it depends on fitting location but if I can get them to sort it as a kit that would be better.

Cheers

The one im using is this one, the ends could have done to be slightly larger though, i think the pipe is something like 11mm, but not completely sure.
