Title: really bad tickover
Post by: spagram on February 13, 2006, 06:57:11 PM
Ive nearly finished rebuilding my car after my accident (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21014)
I started it today for the first time in over a month & it started fine, ran at about 1500-2000rpm until it warmed up then dropped to about 500ish rpm and ran really rough as if it was about to stall, the engine was bouncing around on its mounts. It also smelt like it was running really rich & a little smokey.
Im pretty sure ive reconnected everything the only thing ive not done is the wire that goes to the sensor in the cat which was ripped off in the accident could this cause the problem?
Any help appreciated

hi
the sensor you are on about is the lambda sensor that sends signals to ecu
it may be that is damaged some how when the wires got ripped off as these are very sensitive devices
hope this helps.... :wiggle

Do you know if i can bypass the sensor by just connecting the two wires together, so that i can check if that is the problem?
cheers

hi
i would give it a try but dont really know
i would of thought it would have to be the right resistance rather than just connecting the wires
but wont hurt if you try.....

try a 50ohm resistor soldered between the two wires if you just short them out it will default to rich mode.

This wire is a temp sensor iirc and shouldn\'t affect the running of the car; the lamba sensor fits into the neck of the downpipe by the turbos (not the cat).

I was gunna say that! :p

ok, ill check the lamda sensor as well. Is there anything else that would cause bad tickover like this? Im going to check the compression as well just to make sure but it started fine so i dont think thats the problem.

Beat ya :p

Check map sensor vac line, and any other hoses while you\'re at it just incase they\'ve worked themselves loose.

check the hose to the boost sensor (on the bulk head near the throttle body)

mine came off the other day whilst I was at silverstone and had really rough idle and was pumping puffs of black smoke out the exhaust

Problem solved, the back of the exhaust had been squashed in the accident & wasnt letting the fumes out properly, took the exhaust off & it runs much better, bloody loud too! :Giggle
