hello , ive recently bought my fist rx7, its a uk turbo 2 convertible in black on a 91 plate. The cars in good condition but its impossible to start, ive got some good tips of here on how to get it started so i would like to know what a good uk cars worth, so that i can justify spending some money on it :)
Welcome! :wave
A top quality Uk Cab could be worth over £6000 if its in Show room condition, a Good one can change hands for £4000 an average around £2500 a poor car will go for £1800 and a non runner could be as cheap as £500.
Got any pics?
was it from ebay by any chance ??
if so - i looked at it ( pics ) nice car , shame about the milage
brett is right with prices .. BUT
i just sold mine for £400 as a non runner
i have seen them in garges for £1995 with about 8K of receipts for work done ( inc rebuild 12K ago )
they are only worth what someone will pay to be brutally honest - but YES in A1 condition they are worth a fortune !
so the starting prob ... what happens ????
can you jump start it with booster leads ?
does it try to start ?
Stu
Indeed, prices do vary widely (not to mention that IME most of them are a tad overpriced as well).
Regarding your starting problem, did it *ever* run while you were around?
My UK TII wouldnt start last weekend,we tried all the usual and had to tow it in the end...
:( "Generally" starting difficulty on a rotary = flooding. This is a sign of engine seal wear and the oncoming need of an expensive rebuild.
If you are lucky then it\'s being caused by something else : fuel pump, leaky injectors, bad spark plugs etc etc. However with a car that old, if it has not been rebuilt before then it lilkey that the engine is getting a bit tired.
Best thing to do is drop it down to your local Mazda garage and get a compression test done. If you can\'t move it then you can do a rough compression test at home - take a search around the forum for the method (or try //www.rx7club.com).
Sorry to be all doom and gloom but I think this is most likley your problem
Ah yes, forgot to mention - I\'ve just bought a rather reasonable TII convertible, all original, UK model, 100k on the clock with very reasonable body and a freshly rebuilt engine (with warranty). From a well-known UK rotary specialist...
Paid 3.3k for it and that includes fitting a new back portion of the roof, where they all go. Picking it up tomorrow but have to go back for the roof later... :D
Before you start spending money on yours have a look underneath, some of them do look very nice until you start looking underneath. At which point they look more expensive than anything else. :2Rolleyes
so you bought it matey :)
thats great news :D :D :D
Indeed I have. And joined the club as well... :Giggle
Can\'t wait until tomorrow! :cool
Although I do need to be fairly careful as I still need to run in the engine...
i had the car starting fine and driving great for two days, underneath the car is solid, thats what i always check first. I bought it knowing that the engine would need a rebuild soon but i would have liked it to last longer than 2 days.
sounds like a good time for a tuned engine ? whos the best in the midlands for an engine?

That would be WGT at a guess
i cant see you blowing an engine SOOO quick
can you tell us exactly what happened ?

that wouldnt take a genius to figure out! :driving :D
Anyway welcome to the club Tim, :wave
make sure you plan to come to the rotorstock.

Hello :wave
Well, when you get it started and you\'re out and about driving, look out for me in another black TII cab :D
I never see any other 2nd gens around Staffordshire, so if you spot me - I demand you wave at least (and preferably stop for a chat! :rollin :))

:Thumbs-up even more chance now that its working good again ;)
id severly flooded it on my drive, after taking the plugs out and drying them with a hair dryer i kept turning it over without the fuses until no fuel was being sprayed out them put it all back and dryed every plug i could get my hands on ( the garage had steam cleaned the engine) them it started first crank.
the boost seams very impressive for an old engine, its boosting from just over 2k and its maximum on the standard gauge by 3k, for standard it gives a good kick ;) the only thing i can find thats not standard is a fabricated turbo pipe 4" off the back of the turbo, de-cat and a stainless exhaust of unknown origin.
hope to see others soon
jimmy
glad you got her started :D
:( its back to flooding the engine again :( i think it might be terminal this time, i took the rad cap off and it was bubbling water, air and silicone sealer out the top (someone must have bodged it together at some time) if the water is pressurized there must be a water leak thats letting air in right?
ive checked it for rust and its solid ,theres no dents or dinks on it and the power hood works and everythings watertight so what i need to decide is wether its worth a rebuild,i cant understand how the garage got it going so well and now it dont :god
i was really careful too, i went on different days to check it and started it multiple times when cold and when hot and it started first time ,as soon as i got it home it kicks out clouds of smoke (if it starts) and then is fine again, its soooooo annoying ,if it wasnt for the fact that i fell in love with the sound of it ,it would have been driven of a cliff by now!

Oh ****, that doesn\'t sound too good. If it\'s bubbling "air" when you\'ve got it turning over and/or running then a gasket that\'s supposed to keep coolant and combustion gasses apart somewhere doesn\'t. That\'ll be a rebuild then, sorry.
That said, if it\'s barfing up stuff like silicone sealer then I\'d be having words with the seller unless the car was very cheap or advertised as in need of a rebuild.

Is that garage as in "you bought it from the trade"? If so, I\'d definitely have a word with them if you bought it as a running car.
That said, if the body is absolutely solid (check where the floor meets the inner sill and the back of the floor just in front of the rear axle) the it\'s worth a rebuild. Most cabs I\'ve seen in the past couple of years tend to suffer both from rot and duff engines. Engines tend to be cheaper to rebuild than proper bodywork (that\'s as opposed to MOT-compliant bodging) so you\'ve still done the right thing.

They always puff a bit of smoke out the exhaust - mine does that, and it\'s done about 250 miles since it was rebuilt.
To me it sounds like the car may have been bodged to give off the impression of a decent runner and the bodge has just blown up on you.
Oh, and yes, they do sound gorgeous. I love the sound mine makes even with all the restraint I have to muster while running in the engine :3gears-rh
thats the problem with poor compression
i have a cab at the mo in the same state
it will start and run fine , stop it , it wont start
come back in 24hrs and i will start and run , but again if it stops it wont start
there is an engine and box on ebay at the mo - could be worth it as a temp measure ??
before you go mad - drop a new set of plugs in it and do a compression test - this will give you a better idea ( do the comp test first - you can use a normal comp tester if you can get your hands on one )

just done a compression check and the front rotors 65 psi and the backs 70psi, thats holding the release button in while cranking. The pressurization of the rad seemes to have stopped now that chuck of sealant came out too. What should the compression be?

i bought it as a cheap trade in from a garage, sold as seen :D
