well after scratching around on the net (wikipedia for starters) I think its a VC engine (1769cc\'s is that right ?) and it\'s in the same family of engines as the one I have in the 323.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_C_engine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_B-Series_%28International%29

I can\'t find anything on the timing chain on a VC but this is what I found for the smaller engines ... it might be similar ?

The timing chain tensioner is behind a small cover held with two bolts on the main timing cover.

If you like I\'ll have a look in my Mazda workshop manual for the 323 tonight. It might explain things a little better ?

Hi Mike,
As suggested above there is a cover with 3 bolts situated below the water pump, behind which sits the tensioner.
The tensioner is held on by two 10mm bolts and is sprung loaded as well as relying on oil pressure. The easiest way to get it out is to stick some rags down the into the timing chain cover and then undo the 2 bolts and try to monouver it out by fingertip.
To replace it  - compress it in your hand or in a vice and then either place a cable tie around it or use a single srtrand of copper wire to hold it together while you bolt it back in. Once the timing chain is back in position and the tensioner bolted up , relase the wire/cable tie.
I have an old stock engine gasket set if your interested

Rich ;)

Best way to remove the head is to put in a rotary.
