The only thing I\'ve seen that mentioned them was an old advert in a book. No further info ... sorry

I don\'t have anything specifically for the 1st Gen, but I did have a Janspeed turbo conversion on my rally car (opel), which later donated parts for a comprehensive rework of the system. As fas as I know, the basic technology was used on a number of engines, including the Ford Pinto and others.
The opel version has a crude log style exhaust manifold, which has a screw in wastegate and Rotomaster turbo. I understood that Rotomaster later bacame Garrett, but I still like the idea of a Rotomaster turbo on a rotary! The Turbo had a T4 flange size and an A/R60 compressor housing.
The inlet manifold was a simple steel log fabrication linked directly to the compressor outlet - no intercooler. A cast aluminium adapter allowed a 2" SU carburettor to be fitted onto the front of the compressor. Crude, but it did not need to deal with a pressurised float chamber. The draw through system required special seals in the turbo to deal with the very low compressor pressures when the throttle was closed - something that modern turbo\'s don\'t encounter.
A micro dynamics ignition retard device retarded the ignition on command from a simple pressure switch.
That was pretty much it - lag, poor fuel control and distribution, poor ignition control and hot inlet gas. Times have moved on.......

sounds very much like an elford turbo kit ... is this a conincidence of did Janspeed make the kits that Vic Elford had fitted to cars and sold under the Elford badge ?

According to Brian Long\'s RX-7 book,
Mazda Dealers Bob and Mike Redrup, trading as Bruce Garages had a Janspeed designed installation:
RotoMaster Turbocharger
Intercooler
Twin Choke Weber
Free Flow exhaust
Micro-Dynamics blackbox
It gave 7psi boost and power was about 200bhp
0-60 6.2secs
Top speed 145mph
Cost about £3000 more than an Elford Turbo.

they were blow thru as opposed to suck thru carbs didn\'t Des (one of the many presidents of rx7club have one for a while) don\'t know if you met him or remember him.

think they only made a couple as they had problems with manifolds cracking.

Hi, I know this thread is old but seeing as I have recently obtained one of these beauty\'s I would tell you a little from what I have seen.

Body isnt standard, it has a different rear wing, number plate sits under the rear bumper, there is a plastic \'turbo\' plate in place of the number plate. They have 13 inch alloy wheels, different sideskirts and front bumper.

My car needs setting up, it has a low compression engine so doesnt make the original 200bhp (well not until boost is raised anyway). Its nothing like a NA 1st gen, power peaks at around 5000-6000rpm max and there is little point revving it further.

They even have a remote wastegate, and a cool Janspeed boost gauge.

Ill post some pictures when i get them. I cant wait to see how it is with the boost and carb set up right.

Well it went straight through the MOT but has a problem with the fuel pump (which is not pumping :D) and the wheels are really corroded inside and need beed blasting so one of the tyres keeps going flat. I may try and drive it to Trax but it depends if I can get it running today.

Cheers, Ant.

LoL, had me chuckling reading that.

Ant, is it a standard fuel pump ? they aren\'t that great apparently. and I suspect it\'s having to work hard with a turbo upping the pressure
