Title: Question Before Purchasing.... please help virgin FD fan.
Post by: Mighty_Mini on January 26, 2006, 07:43:47 PM
Hi,

Hello everyone ive just recently joined the forum because i am looking at getting an RX7  :chat

I am currently looking at an RX7, its a 1993 Gen 3 Type R. Done 44,000Miles.

The guy said that there is nothing wrong with the car, except for this problem i am about to explain.

He says that when you give it some boot it sometimes steams a bit. He said that he cannot quite figure out where its from but it doesnt loose water and has never overheated.

Ive trauled though the forum and read a couple of things about a little pipe under the manifold which can be a possibility and also a faulty radiator cap.

I just wanted to know peoples thoughts on this.

Thanks

Dave

I had a similar problem and it was coming from the air pump intake pipe ( it had an ARC filter at the time and this pipe is open to air on these).  This was caused by a nackered non return valve in the emisions control block situated under the plennum chamber.

mm as long as the steam is from the engine bay, and NOT from the exhaust, then it seems the engine internals are not leaking. So it shouldnt be expensive to sort out.

Im not actually buying this car, its a swap for my car.. which is why im trying to  work out the possible problems before committing myself to risking it.

If you\'re in doubt have one of the experts on here give it the once over.
Could save you a lot of grief in the long [or short] term.

You have expressed concerns so don\'t ignore them no matter how much you like the look of the car, put your mind at rest get it looked at.

Hope you make the right descision.

Just be a bit carfull with the Mileage, you are best of buying one thats been rebuilt as opossed to one thats getting into the magic 50k unless you are getting a good deal? But be carfull you don\'t get a car thats only got 10k left.

Hmmm,44,000 miles in 13 years,Dave, take the mileage reading with a pinch of salt, buy what you see not what the clock says.Steam is not good from an RX-7,could be the early signs of coolant O-ring failure or any number of turbo/emission issues.Old tired FD RX-7\'s can be bought cheap for sure but will cost many ££££\'s to return to full health.Try and get it checked over before you make the swap.

Good luck!

The thing is with Imports you can\'tbe 100% sure it has or Hasn\'t had a rebuild in Japan thats why the safe Bet is to by a car that got a History of work in this country?

Unfortunatly its not a case of "Here we go again!" I\'ve just spent a few Months looking for one, I\'ve have seen some of the cars out there. So i am in the prosses of buying *Bowsy*\'s car with 57k on it and a blown motor then having it rebuilt so i know where i stand.

I don\'t want to upset anyone but its a well know fact these cars need to be looked after and buying one with no history for the first 40k of its life has to be done with care.

The milage thing, ok some may have been treated better than others or rebuilt in japan but i still say buying an FD is a Mine field and unless you know what your looking at could end up with a Big bill very soon after you buy.

So what you are saying all Jap Import Fd\'s will do over 60k? I can show you ten right now that have not made 60k?

I still think the old rules aply, if you buy an FD around the 50k mark without proof of an Engine rebuild have 3-4k available for an Engine rebuild in the near future. You may get lucky and pick one up that has had a rebuild in Japan or you may not. How many Threads on here do you see "A week after picking my new Rx7 up its developed a miss fire"?

You want to be carfull telling people that every Fd will be 100k becouse tha fact of the matter is there are to many Abused examples out there that wont.

All right I stand corrected, all your points are valid and I will be quiet now.

me, I know NOTHING!

MightyMini, I think that seeing as we cant buy a brand new any more, you should not buy one.

I\'m not trying to be Funny. I just don\'t think all Fd\'s should be classed the same.

I\'ve seen to many for sale recently and its a real eye opener.

Alot of mixed response on this one, thanks to everyones help im a little wiser what to expect.

The engine over everything else is my main concern, dependant on how it was treated before hand.

I think ive made my decision to have a good look at the car, and take someone who knows RX7\'s with me. That way i shouldnt get a raw deal.

A compression test is the first thing on my list.

Thanks again

Dave
