Title: airbag and sensor.
Post by: ro284 on January 26, 2006, 09:59:09 AM
My FD like many, is coming up to its 13 birthday! i need to remove the front airbag sensor, as its in the way of my cold air induction kit, i don\'t know how long these airbags have before they degrade, or if they just pack up!you cant test them can you! or maybe just the once! i don\'t plan on hitting anything, (but you never know) but if i did would it be any use anyway? i see a lot of cars with aftermarket steering wheels, so question is can i just unplug the wiring from the front sensor where it plugs in just by the brake master cylinder? (2 plugs) has anyone done this please, I could probably move the sensor and make brackets to fit it to the left of where it is now, any advice please guys,
Cheers Bob

thanks Martini,
I thought all FDs came with an air bag as standard, i think mine is a type X! manual with sunroof, cruise, and leather, full Bose, it is a import but wonder why it has a bag, iv\'e not seen any spec\'s any where with this as an extra, perhaps that\'s why iv\'e not had many replies! HELP!
cheers Bob

Yes the sunroof is fab, i even managed to get a sun visor for the sun roof,  its just the airbag sensor that,s the problem for me at the minute, i have looked at wiring diagrams for the bag and it does seem quite complex, i\'m an electrician but not auto! i particularly wanted sunroof etc, and bought the car needing a rebuild, so well happy with it, but as i said i thought they all had the bag,

Hi Bob,

The airbag was fitted to the uk vehicles and I believe only the type X in the early import vehicles, this changed on the circa 96 variants.
The airbag systek carries out a series of self tests every time you switch on the ignition (checks resistances etc)
The system has a built in voltage storage, the theory being if you clip the side of the car and detach the battery you can still activate the airbag from its own source of power.
Once the battery is disconnected you should leave the system for something like 30 mins before carrying out any continuity checks on the system to prevent firing the bag, although if you are looking to diconnect a sensor in the engine bay you should be ok.
The orientation and mounting of the sensors is very important, as the way they operate is a steel ball being held by a magnet, on impact, the force is sufficient to dislodge the ball from the magnet which will then complete a circuit.
In the early days of airbags there were several cases of people/mechanic fatalities by miss trigering of airbags using test lamps incorrectly
I have a wiring diagram detailing the system that you can borrow if this helps.

Chris

Does anyone know if it would it be possible to fit the steering wheel and airbag from an RX8 into an FD? Also could you do this if you didnt have an airbag in your Fd to start with?
sorry to hi-jack your thread but it is related (sort of)

cheers

ManyThanks Chris, sounds like quite a system and i\'m gratefull you told me about that, im often poking around with my multi-tester! the sensor i am thinking of moving is just to the left of the bonnet catch, iv\'e had a look at it and i don\'t think there is any problem with moving it to the left 6 inches, it has an arrow on it so no mistake which way it should go, i have a wiring diagram thanks so don\'t need to borrow yours, guess i\'m lucky to have that on the car, i always thought it was a type X, but also thought all FDs had a bag,
Done 10k now since your rebuild Chris, Perfect, sweet as a nut! Thanks again,Bob
Hi Ant,
Having seen the wiring diagram for the bag, i would have thought that there is just too much to do, there seems a lot to it and a very complex system,
as for parts from a RX8 i would\'nt know but it obviously has to be 100% even the wiring connectors seem a bit special and the bags can be dangerous, as Chris said
